NCAA Basketball: Buckeyes Cruise Past Wildcats To Start Big Ten Play

Ohio State has won at least a share of two consecutive Big Ten championships and is favored to win a third. That titlde defense begins tonight in Columbus as the No. 2 rated Buckeyes host nCAA Tournament hopeful Northwestern. The Wildcats are not the typical Northwestern of old. They are trying to reach their first ever NCAA Tournament and already have some solid wins under their belt:

Only their second loss of the season, Northwestern has fared well against a reasonably difficult early slate, winning two of three games against the RPI Top 50. The Wildcats' other defeat, against #7 Baylor, was an entirely non-competitive game, the sole ugly blemish upon their young season. Baylor throttled them, 69-41, led by 6''7 forward Quincy Acy and shooting guard Pierre Jackson, who had 16 points apiece.

Ohio State's offense has struggled with Player of the Year candidate Jared Sullinger battling persistent injuries, and the Buckeyes will have to to play solid defense against the three-pointer to get the win. Northwestern is not afraid to slow the game down with its Princeton offense, a factor that has been big for them in past games with Ohio State.

Amazon Wins, Netflix Loses in Holiday Satisfaction Study [VIDEO] (Mashable)

[brightcove video="1350778361001" /]
Internet shoppers were happy with Amazon and disappointed in Netflix this holiday season, according to a study released Wednesday.

[More from Mashable: Man Uses Google+ Game to Propose to Girlfriend [VIDEO]]

In an annual index of ecommerce sites' customer satisfaction by analytics firm ForeSee, Amazon's performance improved while Netflix's plunged after the two companies spent several years dueling for the study's top spot. Amazon's overall score rose two points to register 88 out of 100 possible points for the index's best mark.

But Netflix, following a year marred by a series of service and public relations missteps, saw its total fall seven points for an overall rank of 79. The 8% decline in score was the steepest of all the companies included in the study.

[More from Mashable: Amazon Goes Social Shopping: What Quorus Hires Mean]

The survey considers a range of factors to rank online retailers, including website content, functionality, merchandise and prices. ForeSee considers a score of 80 to be "the standard for excellence."

Netflix appears to be experiencing continued blowback from a fiasco-plagued 2011. In July, the company unexpectedly raised its prices for both streaming and DVD delivery by 60%. Then in August, it attempted to create a spinoff company that would have required customers to create two separate accounts for what was previously one service.

Netflix then scrapped that plan in October, but its stock price had already lost half its value the month before. ForeSee says its holiday satisfaction survey is the first methodical assessment of customer satisfaction with Netflix since company's blunders earlier this year.

"Customer satisfaction is predictive, which means that Netflix's financial woes may be just beginning," ForeSee president Larry Freed said in a statement accompanying the study's release.

Amazon, meanwhile, continues its dominance of the online retail space in multiple sectors and rebranded its streaming video service earlier this year to better compete with Netflix. Amazon has also received a boost from its line of popular Kindle products, which have sold at an astounding rate recently.

While Amazon enjoyed a glowing review according to the holiday shopping study, other companies made even more impressive jumps in online customer satisfaction. Electronics retailer TigerDirect.com made the largest jump, with an 8 percent increase in customer satisfaction for an overall score of 79. JC Penney, which named former Apple executive Ron Johnson as CEO earlier this year, improved by 6% for an overall score of 83.

Gap.com and Overstock.com posted the steepest declines after Netflix, falling six and five percent, respectively. Gap.com registered an overall score of 73, while Overstock.coms' score was 72.

General online shopper satisfaction has increased from 74 when the holiday satisfaction study began in 2005 to an all-time high of 79 this year.

Where do Netflix and Amazon stand in your opinion? What e-retailers were you impressed or let down by this holiday season?

Our Favorite Celebrity Couples Of 2011

From Britney and Jason to K-Stew and R-Pattz, we look back at the best high-profile pair-ups of the year.
By Jocelyn Vena

Jason Trawick and Britney Spears
Photo: Denise Truscello/ WireImage

From young love to established romantic empires, 2011 was all about PDA. Some of La La Land's most A-list couples weren't shy about flaunting the love they share. From musicians to actors to everyone in between, the last 12 months were all about sharing the love. As the year winds down, MTV News is reflecting on some of our favorite couples of the year.

Britney Spears and Jason Trawick
The couple walked red carpets, gave each other shout-outs at awards shows and even got naked together in Britney's "Criminal" video, but it wasn't until December that they decided to make it official. After two years of dating, Spears and Trawick took their relationship to the next level, with confirmation that Jason put a ring on it. The pair celebrated their love and their impending nuptials in Las Vegas. Their engagement sparked headlines and left Spears "glowing."

Who is your top couple of 2011? Vote in our Newsroom poll!

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
Summing up Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's year into a little blurb isn't that easy. They went to events together, and Bieber lavishly rented the Staples Center just to watch "Titanic." And when they weren't chilling out, they were giving shine to each other's hard work. Or bringing each other gifts. Remember when Bieber showed Selena his pet snake, Johnson, at the VMAs? Yes, we knew you wouldn't forget.

Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattinson
The two "Twilight" stars seem poised to make our favorite couples lists for years to come. While in years past, they've remained under the radar, this year they came out of their shell and opened up about one another in interviews. Who could forget the time that K-Stew referred to her not-so-mysterious "English" boyfriend in an interview? We're assuming not R-Pattz.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z
OK, so Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been together for, like, an eternity, but it wasn't until this year that the pair really had everyone buzzing. When Beyoncé stepped out at the VMAs, her expanding midsection and flashy performance was the ultimate pregnancy announcement. Jay-Z didn't seem to mind all the attention. He celebrated the baby news in the audience with his pal Kanye West.

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose
Amber Rose rebounded from her relationship with Kanye West by falling in love with Wiz Khalifa. The couple took the world on their wild relationship ride, from doing interviews together to sparking rumors that they had tied the knot. These two kept everyone talking and they don't seem to mind the attention, or spending lots of time with one another.

Royal Dutch Shell says Nigeria spill contained (AP)

ABOARD THE BONGA FLOATING OIL VESSEL ? The worst Nigeria offshore oil spill in more than a decade has been contained before reaching the West African nation's coast, officials with Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Monday, less than a week after one of its lines bled crude into the Atlantic Ocean.

An investigation into how the spill of less than 40,000 barrels ? or 1.68 million gallons ? happened remains ongoing, though company officials acknowledged workers only discovered the leak after seeing a sheen of crude in water surrounding its Bonga offshore oil field.

Meanwhile, Shell officials say the company will clean up another spill it discovered while containing its own ? highlighting how prevalent pollution remains in oil-stained Nigeria after more than 50 years of production.

"We can undeniably say we traced our oil ... and stopped it," said Cliff Pain, who manages the Bonga operation for a Shell subsidiary.

Shell organized a helicopter flight Monday for journalists to see the Bonga field ? controlled from a large ship as opposed to a stationary rig ? about 75 miles (120 kilometers) off Nigeria's coast. There, waters appeared free of the oil sheen as ships continued to patrol along the underwater lines linking the vessel to oil fields and transfer buoys for filling tankers.

The leak discovered Dec. 20 came from a break in a flexible line about 360 meters out from the vessel that sends oil to tankers, Pain said. While the vessel has a variety of gauges to check pressure on the line, it wasn't until daylight broke that workers noticed a sheen surrounding the Bonga vessel, he said.

It takes about 25 hours to fill a waiting tanker with 1 million barrels of oil from the vessel, Pain said. That means the leak could have spewed for hours before being noticed.

At its height, Shell statistics show the sheen spread across about 350 square miles (900 square kilometers), matching an estimate earlier issued by an independent watchdog group called SkyTruth. Nigerian government officials previously said the spill only affected an area a third that size

Using ships and aircraft, workers spread chemical dispersants to break up the oil, which also evaporated in the region's warm water and air, said Steve Keedwell, a Shell employee who helped oversee the cleanup operation. Shell ultimately stopped the sheen about 11 miles (18 kilometers) before it made landfall, Pain said.

However, workers then discovered a separate oil spill around the mouth of a river in Delta state, said Mutiu Sunmonu, Shell's Nigeria country chairman. Sunmonu said samples of the oil showed it came from a different source, though the company would clean it up as well.

"When I sighted it myself, my initial reaction was anger, but I told myself: 'You know, you just cannot afford to be angry, just deal with it,'" Sunmonu said.

The Nigerian group Environmental Rights Action, which monitors spills around Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta, has blamed Shell for the new spill. Nnimmo Bassey, the group's executive director, could not be immediately reached for comment Monday night.

Shell operates the Bonga field in partnership with Italy's Eni SpA, Exxon Mobil Corp., France's Total SA and the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. It produces about 200,000 barrels of oil a day ? around 10 percent of production in Africa's most populous nation. The field remains shut down and Shell officials offered no estimate Monday of when production could resume at a field vital to Nigeria's government finances.

Nigeria, an OPEC member nation producing about 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, is a top supplier to the United States. However, pollution from spilled oil stains its Niger Delta region, with crude lapping against beaches and leaving a black ring around creeks in an area about the size of Portugal.

Some environmentalists say as much as 550 million gallons of oil poured into the delta during Shell's roughly 50 years of production in Nigeria ? a rate roughly comparable to one Exxon Valdez disaster per year. Many blame Shell and foreign companies working in Nigeria for the pollution. However, Shell in recent years has blamed most of its spills on militant attacks or thieves tapping into pipelines to steal crude oil, which ends up sold on the black market or cooked into a crude diesel or kerosene.

Talking with journalists, Sunmonu acknowledged that the limited spill, open ocean and favorable weather had helped Shell quickly contain the spill. If it had been on land, the oil could have sunk into the soil, remaining there for years, he said.

It also would have pushed Shell into negotiations with village elders to clean up the spill, something it often contracts other companies to handle. Many view the company with hostility after its years in the delta, and its employees remain targets of kidnap gangs and militants.

"You don't have communities to contend with" on the ocean, Sunmonu said.

Foes, backers of Yemen transition deal fight in Sanaa (Reuters)

SANAA (Reuters) ? Backers of a Yemeni Islamist party that signed on to a plan to nudge the president from power scuffled with members of a Shi'ite rebel movement frozen out of the deal in the capital Sanaa Tuesday, witnesses said.

They said loyalists of the Islah party traded blows with clubs and volleys of stones with members of the Houthi rebel movement, in the Sanaa square that has seen nearly a year of protests aimed at forcing the president from power.

Activists said at least 20 people were injured during the scuffles, which a representative of the Houthis said erupted when Islah backers attacked a tent they had set up to denounce the deal to edge President Ali Abdullah Saleh out of office.

That deal - crafted by Yemen's richer neighbors, and backed by a U.N. Security Council resolution and Washington - offers Saleh immunity from prosecution in exchange for handing power to his deputy, who is to work with a government including Islah and other opposition parties before a February presidential vote.

Saleh had backed out of the deal several times before signing it last month in Saudi Arabia, which shares U.S. fears that the struggle over Saleh's fate could descend into civil war and chaos that strengthens al Qaeda's wing in Yemen.

The deal did not include the Houthis, members of the Shi'ite Zaydi sect, whom Saleh launched an abortive campaign to crush - which also saw Saudi military intervention in 2009 - in the northwestern Saada province bordering Saudi Arabia.

U.N. Yemen envoy Jamal Benomar, who is attempting to shore up the transition deal, visited Saada this month and met with leaders of the Houthis, who have in recent months fought Sunni Islamists espousing Salafi doctrines that are influential in Saudi Arabia and condemn Shi'ites as heretics.

Washington is weighing a request for a visa from Saleh, who said he planned a U.S. visit Saturday, hours after his forces killed nine people demanding he be tried for the deaths of hundreds of protesters during 11 months of protests against him.

He told reporters his trip would include medical tests. Saleh suffered burns and other injuries in an assassination attempt in June that capped fighting between his forces and those of a tribal faction influential in Islah.

The top "counter-terrorism" official in Washington - which wages a campaign of drone strikes against alleged al Qaeda members in Yemen and assassinated Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen, that way earlier this year - urged Saleh's deputy Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi Sunday to show restraint with protests.

Any successor to Saleh would face multiple, overlapping conflicts including renewed separatist sentiment in the south, which fought a civil war with Saleh's north in 1994 after four turbulent years of formal union.

How To Make Rage Faces on Facebook Chat

Simply type the above code that corresponds to the appropriate rage face into Facebook chat, and the image of the rage face you chose will appear, emoticon-like in its existence. Facebook didn?t suddenly become hip to the Internet and add rage face emoticons (something from which Google Chat would greatly benefit), but the ability to add rage faces to Facebook chat is more of a hack than anything else, and something to which you can add.

Reddit user daychilde explains that these aren?t actually some form of ragemoticon, but that the double bracket and code corresponds to a user profile or page, and when put into Facebook chat, will show the thumbnail of the profile or page that the code links to.

So, all one has to do to make any picture a Facebook chat emoticon, is to simply create a user profile or page that uses the desired picture as the profile picture, then enter the double brackets and corresponding code into Facebook chat. Here?s a tidy list of some more rage face codes:

> Android, audio, mobile apps > Audiotool Sketch brings top notch electronic music making to Android tablets

December 25th, 2011 12:06pm mike s

Although there?s no shortage of decent apps in the Android Market, it still lags a little behind the Apple App Store when it comes to high quality, music making tools.

Looking to even things up a bit is Audiotool Sketch, a superbly designed music app offering virtualised vintage synth and drum machine sounds.

Not unlike Rhythm Studio on iOS, Sketch lets would-be musos get busy with two drum machines, one synth, and a mixer/delay unit for tweaking the sounds to your heart?s content.

All this sonic wizardry requires some processing power, with the app demanding a dual core CPU and Android 3.0. Although it can run on the Galaxy Nexus, it?s really for Android tablets, and early reviews have been very positive,

Audiotool Sketch can currently be bagged for ?0.99 on the Android Market ? and that?s an introductory price, so get in quick!

Breast Cancer Patients Face More Imaging Tests Today (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Women with breast cancer undergo many more imaging tests between diagnosis and surgery than they did in the early 1990s, a new study finds.

The tests -- breast ultrasounds, MRIs and mammograms -- help doctors determine the best course of treatment, but add to the hassles and expense of care, the study says.

"The burden to the patient is increasing substantially," said study leader Dr. Richard Bleicher, an associate professor of surgical oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. For older patients, especially, coordination of care is needed, he said.

Bleicher, a breast surgeon, evaluated data on more than 67,000 women in the United States diagnosed with breast cancer from 1992 to 2005. His intent was to clock the time and inconvenience involved in multiple imaging appointments.

In 1992, he found that 1 in 20, or under 5 percent of patients, had imaging twice or more during the preoperative period of about 37 days. By 2005, 1 in 5 patients, or nearly 20 percent, had two or more imaging sessions.

"Patients are having a lot more imaging done overall," he said. "I can't tell you whether the imaging was appropriate or not appropriate."

The percentage of patients who had more than one type of imaging on a given day increased more than six-fold, from about 4 percent in 1992 to just over 27 percent in 2005, the study found.

A subgroup of 20 patients had five or more mammogram visits during the pre-op period, he found.

For the study, the researchers used Medicare claims linked to the U.S. National Cancer Institute's Surveillance Epidemiology End Results data for women with breast cancer. They zeroed in on about 67,750 women over age 65 who had invasive cancer that hadn't spread and who were scheduled for surgery.

Bleicher presented the findings earlier this month at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. He urged his colleagues to consider ways of streamlining the testing, with an eye to improving treatment without raising costs.

The increase in imaging tests does not surprise Dr. Carol Lee, head of the communications committee for the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Commission.

"Practices have changed," she said. "Standards of care have changed." Since 1992, imaging technology has advanced greatly, she said, noting there are more, and better, options.

One limitation of the study, she said, is that the outcomes are not addressed. "This is not telling the whole story," she said. "What gets lost in the numbers is, what are the possible benefits of this additional imaging?"

"Yes, we are doing more tests," she said. "But we are not doing tests for the sake of doing tests."

Some states have laws that address self-referral, said Shawn Farley, spokesperson for the American College of Radiology. The specifics of the laws vary.

Lee agreed with Bleicher that doctors should strive for better coordination of imaging tests.

If your doctor orders imaging, Bleicher recommends asking why it's needed. You might also ask if the doctor expects more imaging will be needed and if so, whether it's possible to schedule tests together, he said.

The study was supported by the U.S. Public Health Service, the American Cancer Society, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and private donors.

Research presented at meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Needy Pets Celebrate the Holidays Early! | Pasados

Butterscotch will not go without food, treats, toys or bedding this holiday season!

Tuesday, Dec 20, 2011 ? Needy pets in 10 cities in WA state received food, toys, treats and bedding today.

Every holiday season, Pasado?s eagerly anticipates the chance to provide hope, joy, and love for families who need our help the most. In Washington State alone, more than 23,000 people are homeless on any given night and over 100,000 people face homelessness in our state each year. It is estimated that between 10-25% of homeless people have nonhuman family members ? resulting in heartbreaking decisions each and every night. Many families forsake their own needs, including food and medicine, to provide for their devoted pets.

Over 50 volunteers delivered items to needy pets, like Boots, the kitty pictured here who lives in a tent city.

For the past 8 years, Home for the HOWLidays has reached out to the local community. Since 2004, Pasado?s Safe Haven has ensured that pets who have so very little will not have to go without once again during the holidays. Thanks to Home for the HOWLidays, dogs and cats who live in the rain, wind, and cold will be warm and cozy this holiday season. These pets have had so very little in their lives, yet their owners love them and give them everything that they can. Sometimes, these pets are all that they have. And giving to those who need our help the most is the best gift that one can give.

Team Seattle gets ready to head out to deliver items to pets in need.

On Tuesday, December 20th, Pasado?s staff and volunteers provided shelter, food, and much-deserved treats for cats and dogs in need. More than 50 volunteers participated in this day of caring and giving back to our community: A celebration of hope, joy, and love for those who needed it the most.

This year, more families needed our help supplying the basic necessities than in seasons past. ?We recently met a man who was feeding his dog Spaghetti O?s because that?s all he could afford for the two of them to share,? stated Stacie Martin, Pasado?s Director of Operations. ?During Home for the HOWLidays, you may possibly meet animals who have never had a toy, a warm bed, or even a regular meal, but they are loved and their families are always grateful to receive food and gifts for them!?

Many thanks to Pasado's wonderful volunteers who helped make holiday wishes come true for local pets.

Home for the HOWLidays visited 10 local cities, including Seattle, West Seattle, Sultan, Monroe, Gold Bar, Granite Falls, Snohomish, Lynwood, Marysville and Everett. Volunteers loaded up their SUVs, vans, and trucks with pet food and supplies.

Our Seattle route included Nickelsville, an encampment for the homeless and less fortunate. In Nickelsville, Pasado?s dewormed and applied flea treatments to 11 cats and 4 dogs. We also provided a check-up and deworming for two goats named Sally and Richard. The goats live at Nickelsville and help clear out the blackberry bushes, providing an environmentally friendly way to keep the area clean. In Nickelsville, volunteers met some animals who we will soon provide additional treatments for, as well as free spay and neuter services.

Pasado?s other Home for the HOWLidays routes were equally successful.

We cannot think of a better way to celebrate the spirit of this season. Thanks to your donations, Pasado?s was able to help so many families have a happy holiday.

If you would like to help Pasado?s

Even Richard and Sally, a couple of goats we met along the way recieved some medical treatment from Pasado's Safe Haven

continue to help those who need our help the most, please consider making a donation today. Your support truly can make a world of difference.

Hands-On With The 4Moms Origami Stroller

Screen Shot 2011-12-20 at 2.44.54 PMWhen I first saw the 4moms Origami stroller, I knew it would be a hit. It's a robotic stroller that unfolds like the Autobots getting ready to roll out and has one of the nicest interfaces I've ever seen on a stroller (which is saying a lot). Why did it make me so excited? Well, first this stroller will beat the pants off any of those feature-rich Stokkes or Buzzes out there. Pull this thing out on the playground and you are the true Ninja Parent. Bugaboo? Whatever. My kid is riding Optimus Prime. I'm pleased to report that the buggy is as cool as it looks on video. The one-handed operation is seamless and incredibly satisfying and the fun LCD readout - complete with trip meter, battery level, and external temperature sensor - is just icing on the cake.

Romney raises doubts about Gingrich in South Carolina (Reuters)

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) ? Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney sought to create doubts about rival Newt Gingrich among South Carolina conservatives on Saturday by criticizing his high-paid work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac.

Romney, on a two-day tour of South Carolina to try to dent Gingrich's big lead in the polls here, all but accused Gingrich of lobbying for Freddie Mac by accepting $1.6 million in consultants' fees from an enterprise at the heart of America's housing crisis.

Gingrich has nurtured South Carolina's Tea Party conservatives to try to secure the state that holds the first primary in the South on January 21 and the third overall contest in the race to determine a candidate to face Democratic President Barack Obama next November.

Romney pointed out to reporters that Gingrich had at first said he made $300,000 from Freddie Mac over an extended period and that only later was it revealed that he had earned $1.6 million from the government-sponsored business.

"I think as Tea Partiers concentrate on that for instance they'll say, 'Wow this really isn't the guy that represents our views," Romney said. "I think the Tea Party is anxious to have people who are outside Washington come in and change Washington, as opposed to people who have stayed in Washington for 30 or 40 years."

Gingrich's rivals are attempting to use Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac as an indication that the former speaker of the House of Representatives has grown rich as a Washington insider.

Asked if he thought Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac amounted to lobbying, Romney replied: "I going to let the lawyers decide what is and what isn't lobbying, but if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, typically it's a duck."

Gingrich has denied acting as a lobbyist for Freddie Mac.

Romney is touring South Carolina with the state's Republican governor, Nikki Haley, hoping her endorsement will help him curry favor with Tea Party conservatives who have long held doubts about whether Romney is true to their principles.

Although Haley's popularity has dropped in recent months, several Republican candidates had sought her endorsement, but she chose Romney on Friday.

Romney attempted to convince South Carolina's military community to side with him, a strategy that Senator John McCain had used to great effect in 2008 in winning the state's primary and going on to win the Republican presidential nomination.

South Carolina is home to eight military bases that provide jobs for thousands of military and civilian personnel. Thousands of retired military veterans are in the state as well.

Romney vowed to build up the U.S. military if elected in place of Obama.

"I want to have a military so strong that no one would ever think of testing it," he said to loud applause at a town hall event hosted by Republican Congressman Tim Scott.

Use the Valsalva Maneuver to Prevent Ear Pain When Flying [Flying]

Use the Valsalva Maneuver to Prevent Ear Pain When FlyingEar-popping pain is one of the hazards of flying. For some, especially kids or those with colds, Pain In The Ear or Airplane Ear can be quite severe. Mun Fitness Blog suggests several tips for preventing this condition, including the "Valsalva maneuver."

In the Valsalva manuever, you close your mouth and pinch your nose shut and exhale forcibly through your nostrils. You'll hear a "popping" sound and the pressure should be equalized in your ears. (Unequal pressure in your ears when the plane takes off or lands is the cause of Airplane Ear.)

Besides several other suggestions for preventing ear pain when flying, Mun Fitness Blog also offers a great tip for preventing ear pain that happens when driving:

Ear pain also happens while sitting in a car which come down from a steep mountain quickly with the window rolled up. Leave a crack in the window when descending or climbing a steep mountain will help.

I've always just chewed gum when flying. What's your strategy?

Gingrich campaign works to translate Hispanic ties into votes (Daily Caller)

The campaign of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is looking to woo Hispanic voters, a must-win constituency for President Barack Obama in 2012, with a uniquely energized and focused outreach operation for the primaries and beyond.

While other parts of his campaign have struggled to get up and running, Gingrich has had a separate Miami-based headquarters for months tasked exclusively for reaching out to Hispanic voters. He also has outreach (or ?inclusion,? to use the campaign?s preferred term) operations based in early primary states.

Sylvia Garcia, Gingrich?s National Hispanic Inclusion Director and the leader of the Miami headquarters, says that the campaign is busy recruiting a team of Hispanic county chairs in states like New Hampshire and Iowa, as well as in Western swing states with large Hispanic populations.

?We?re working hard on getting enough people on the ground to work with all our volunteers and get out the message,? Garcia told The Daily Caller.

Obama won two-thirds of the Hispanic vote in 2008, but there are signs Republicans could pick up enough of that vote ? 40 percent is often cited as the magic number ? to give the White House a run for its money in states like Colorado, Florida and New Mexico.

Supporters say Gingrich?s moderate stance on immigration, long-standing ties to the Hispanic community and much publicized conversion to Catholicism would make him a dangerous opponent to an Obama campaign, which is counting on overwhelming support from Latinos next year.

Likewise, even some Democratic strategists have expressed concern that Gingrich?s interest in peeling away Hispanic voters could cause serious trouble for the White House should he win the nomination. (RELATED: Full coverage of Newt Gingrich)

?The possibility of a Gingrich nomination does scramble the deck, and it may mean that President Obama has to be more assertive on immigration issues,? Frank Sharry, a liberal immigration advocate, told The Washington Post earlier this month.

?Newt?s been reaching out to Hispanic voters for many years,? Garcia, who has been working for Gingrich on Latino issues for seven years, told TheDC. ?It had nothing to do with his campaign. ? We launched his Newt.org website in Spanish back in ?05 I believe, we had two of his books translated into Spanish, we had his DVD on Pope John Paul II translated into Spanish, launched TheAmericano.com as a conservative web mag for Hispanics.?

Gingrich, Garcia said, has been having regular round table discussion with Hispanic business and religious leaders at least since 2006, and that the campaign has a Spanish-language campaign website, NewtPresidente, along with a Spanish language Facebook page and Twitter feeds. His religious conversion is also often highlighted when reaching out to Catholic and Evangelical Hispanics.

?Hispanic inclusion is front-and-center in this campaign,? Garcia said. ?It?s always been front-and-center in messaging for Newt, and the communication to the Hispanic community has always been important to him.?

?I think that?s really where he can differentiate himself from the other candidates,? she continued.

Garcia also hopes Hispanic voters can make a difference for Newt in the upcoming primaries.

?I think one of the biggest mistakes Republican campaigns have made in the past has been to ignore the Latino vote for the primaries,? she said, adding that it?s a good way to earn their trust and build a ?sincere relationship? before the general election.

?Newt?s position on immigration and Latino issues is important, and it?s unique, and we think it?s important to talk [about],? Carli Dimino, Gingrich?s New Hampshire inclusion director, told TheDC in the campaign?s bustling Granite State headquarters in Manchester.

Like much of the campaign?s New Hampshire staff, the Boston College-educated Dimino is a political neophyte and longtime fan of the former Speaker. Now she?s in charge of turning out the state?s small but growing Latino population for Gingrich in time for the primary on January 10th. ?(SEE ALSO:?Mark Steyn: Gingrich ?in a benign sense ? is a totalitarian?)

?First day I got here, I went to city hall to see how to register to vote, because every state?s a little bit different,? she said. ?I asked for materials in Spanish, and they didn?t have them, so first day I get here I translated all those documents here, available and translated for anyone who might need them.?

Signs in English as well as Spanish welcome voters to Gingrich?s New Hampshire HQ, along with copies of the 21st Century Contract with America available in both languages. Dimino translates all of it, and goes door to door reaching out to Hispanic leaders in the state, building contacts and asking them to help get Gingrich?s message out.

The small size of the Hispanic community in New Hampshire does pose difficulties for outreach, but Dimino says the response she?s received has exceeded expectations at every turn.

?I?m from outside Philadelphia, where every church has a Spanish mass,? Dimino said. ?But everybody here is like, ?Spanish mass? What?? I did find a Spanish mass that I?ll be going to this weekend, to stand outside and pass out literature and reach them that way, because I think his background and his message really resonates with Catholic voters.?

?It been an amazingly positive response,? Dimino said. ?Latinos are amazingly receptive to his message.?

Gringrich and science (Time.com)

The busy mind of Newt Gingrich has been much in the news lately. He's the man of grand ideas -- a thinker, a theorist, the big brain in a GOP field of bureaucrats and simpletons. Don't believe it? Don't worry, Gingrich himself will tell you.

Gingrich's mind indeed does churn. The problem is, he approaches ideas the way a gluttonous gourmand approaches food -- with a rich, complex and subtle appetite, but also a hopeless weakness for corn dogs and Twinkies. If it's edible -- or, in his case, imaginable -- he's interested. This can be awkward, particularly when he steps outside of his comfort zone of history and public policy and starts to muck around with science. (Watch "10 Questions for Newt Gingrich.")

Much has been made of some of Gingrich's wackier ideas in the past few weeks, beginning with his oft-repeated worry that a rogue state with a nuclear weapon could shut down the U.S. power grid. To give Gingrich his due, there's a grain of truth in his fears. Scientists agree -- theoretically at least -- that a missile detonated at the right altitude could trigger what's known as an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that could fry the circuits of whatever country lay below. The one experiential data point that supports this idea occurred in 1962, when an atmospheric test of an American atomic weapon caused street lights in Hawaii to go temporarily dark.

Of course, it's a big step from there to shutting down an entire country, especially when the bad actors Gingrich imagines blacking out America are the Iranians and North Koreans, who have nowhere near the missile technology or targeting know-how to pull off such a stunt -- at least without being detected -- and in the case of Iran, don't even have a bomb yet. What's more, if either country did want to launch a strike, it would be a whole lot easier to go the point-and-shoot route -- pick a city and try to take it out directly. Yet Gingrich has continued to sound the EMP alarm, arguing that preparing for an attack should be an important part of the country's defense posture.

"In theory, a relatively small device detonated over Omaha would knock out about half the electricity generated in the United States," he warned in Iowa last week, according to the New York Times.

Gingrich's advocacy of space mirrors -- albeit years ago, in a 1984 book -- has provoked eye rolling too. The thinking is that scientists could position giant mirrors in space that would point toward Earth, reflecting sunlight downward and creating as much illumination as several full moons. This would eliminate the need for nighttime lighting on highways and brighten shadowy neighborhoods as a deterrent to crime. (Read "Newt Gingrich: Potential President, or Skilled Showman?")

Put aside what this would also do to the day-night cycle under which all life on Earth is accustomed to operating; put aside what it would do to the simple business of looking up and trying to see a star. The technical obstacles are dizzying. The U.S. has already orbited one whopping big mirror -- a slab of polished glass inside the Hubble Space telescope that measures close to 8 ft. (2.4 m) in diameter. But reflective space mirrors would have to be far bigger, perhaps the size of a football field. Even the massive International Space Station, which measures 357 ft. (109 m) across, appears to be little more than a moving star at the lowest point of its orbit, 234 mi. (376 km) above ground. To provide permanent illumination to a target area, you'd have to position your mirrors a whole lot farther away -- in geosynchronous orbit, 22,236 mi. (37,786 km) above sea level, so that their rate of revolution matches the rotation of the globe.

The weight problem alone makes this impossible -- at least if you were trying to fly a giant mirror made of glass, like the Hubble's. While University of Arizona engineers have developed mirror material only .04 in (1 mm) thick, this doesn't address other problems like the cost of launching and maintaining the mirrors, not to mention keeping so big a target safe from meteors and other space debris. All of this seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to for an illumination problem that highway lights and porch lamps already solve rather neatly.

It's Gingrich's advocacy of moon mining, however, that is getting the most attention -- and drawing the most derision -- partly because this is a drum he doesn't seem willing to quit banging. For the most part, the moon is a pretty prosaic mix of very familiar materials -- including silicon, iron, calcium, aluminum, potassium and phosphorous. There is, however, also helium-3. A light isotope of common helium, helium-3 streams toward Earth all the time as part of the storm of charged particles coming from the sun, but our planet's magnetic field deflects most of it. This is not so on the moon, which has a magnetic field far weaker than Earth's. What makes this important is that helium-3 also turns out to be a cracker jack fuel for fusion reactors -- far more efficient than the deuterium currently used. But it's not just a matter of going to the moon, scooping up what you need and powering the world on it. (Watch TIME's video "Earth Is Running Out of Helium.")

First of all, a practical fusion reactor has not yet been invented and there's no realistic projection for when it might be -- though scientists have been trying for decades. What's more, the moon's helium-3 is not just there for the taking. Apollo samples revealed that the isotope is present in lunar soil in concentrations no greater than 30 parts per billion. Harrison Schmitt, the lunar module pilot on Apollo 17 and the only geologist to walk on the moon, estimates that it would take 220 lbs (100 kg) of helium-3 to power one city the size of Dallas for one year, and to collect that much you'd have to dig a trench three quarters of a mile square by 9 ft. deep (1.9 sq km by 2.7 m).

That's a lot of digging, and it doesn't even touch the cost of getting the stuff home. Even aboard cheap rockets like the Russian Proton, it costs $2,200 to launch a pound of payload to low Earth orbit. The shuttle, nobody's idea of a bargain ship, cost $8,100 per lb. Things are a lot cheaper on the moon, where lower gravity means everything weighs less, but that doesn't mean every ounce doesn't cost -- a lot. There's a reason the skin of the Apollo lunar module was no thicker than three sheets of aluminum foil and that its windows were triangular, a shape that shaved a few ounces off of the framing and sealant that would have been needed for round windows of approximately the same size.

In the last presidential debate, Gingrich responded to Mitt Romney's criticism of the moon mining concept by not responding. "I'm happy to defend the idea that America should be in space and should be there in an aggressive, entrepreneurial way," he said -- which most people agree with and which is not what Romney was questioning at all.

Answering evasively, of course, is what politicians do, as is dreaming big dreams of New Frontiers and Great Societies and shining cities on hills. But dreams aren't science -- and politicians, for the most part, aren't scientists. Newt Gingrich may play one on TV, but that doesn't mean anyone is required to listen.

Dr. Phil McGraw: Vasectomy Was 'Biggest Mistake I Ever Made' (VIDEO)

Early on in his marriage, Dr. Phil McGraw did something he regretted: he got a vasectomy.

In an essay for Newsweek, he said that his wife had gotten pregnant four years into their marriage. He was a young doctor with a new practice, and they negotiated. He only wanted the one child, and got a vasectomy shortly thereafter. He said, "That vasectomy was the biggest mistake I ever made. I was 29."

Six years later, he was at an event with his wife when he overheard her say that agreeing to have just one child was the biggest regret of her life. It was enough to have him get the procedure reversed the very next day. His wife was ecstatic, and she was pregnant with their second child Jordan thirty days later.

"God, if I had missed that?how dumb," Dr. Phil wrote. "I just shudder at how stupid I was. I learned you don?t make life decisions on the spur of the moment, and you don?t make them alone. I got a do-over on the biggest mistake of my life, and I am delighted that I did."

He has discussed his experience on his show before.
