Lovie fired after missing playoffs

DavidDotyGettyGetty Images

The day after the 2012 NFL regular season ended, Judge David Doty convened a hearing on the question of whether the NFLPA should be able to pursue a collusion claim arising from the salary-cap penalties imposed in March on the Cowboys and the Redskins.? The day after the 2012 NFL regular season ended, Judge Doty issued a decision.

In short, the NFL removed a total of $46 million in cap space from the two teams for treating the uncapped year of 2010 as, well, uncapped.? The NFLPA, despite agreeing to the cap penalties in exchange for an agreement by the league to artificially increase the 2012 salary cap to a level north of the 2011 number, claimed that comments made in the aftermath of the announcement of the cap penalties disclosed for the first time that shenanigans were occurring in 2010.

The NFL argued that any potential claim for collusion was barred by the simple fact that the parties agreed in 2011 to end all litigation when finalizing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.? Judge Doty agreed, finding that ?the NFLPA released the claims it attempts to assert in the underlying action.?

As a result, the settlement agreement won?t be reopened, and the NFLPA won?t be able to pursue upwards of $1 billion in damages from the NFL.

While the union may now appeal the outcome, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit has a reputation for being conservative and, thus, pro-business.? Which makes it highly unlikely that Judge Doty?s decision would be overturned.

Indeed, most judges regardless of politics prefer to see settled cases remain settled.? In this case, the NFL and the NFLPA resolved their differences, including any claim that there was collusion in 2010 regarding the uncapped year that, based on the penalties imposed on the Cowboys and Redskins, wasn?t really uncapped.

But not just any TV; Samsung Tomorrow is drumming up anticipation for "an unprecedented new TV shape" to be unveiled in Vegas. From the photo, it looks like a monitor in the portrait form factor, -- and a transparent one, at that -- but we won't have to hold our horses too long before we learn more. In the meantime, you can check out the video below the break.

UFA, Russia ? Goaltending? Check.

A short bench? No big deal.

Discipline? Not really an issue.

The factors that might have been problems for Canada in its game against the United States at the 2013 World Junior Championship didn?t materialize.

Instead, goalie Malcolm Subban, who had allowed six goals in Canada?s first two games of the tournament, was nearly perfect in a 2-1 victory.

Canada played the game without a pair of suspended forwards. JC Lipon served his one-game suspension, while Boone Jenner?s three-gamer is done as well. Both will be in the lineup when Canada and Russia meet on New Year?s Eve in the final preliminary-round game for both teams. The winner will earn a bye the semifinals on Thursday.

But there was not much off the pace of the Canadian forwards, who didn?t perform like they were one man short.

Captain Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Strome scored for Canada.

With Strome in the penalty box, Jacob Trouba scored for the U.S. in the third period on a power play.

Nugent-Hopkins, who leads the tournament with eight points, scored on a wrist shot in the first period after Mark Scheifele won a faceoff in the U.S. end. Canada gained control and Jonathan Huberdeau made a pass off the side boards to Nugent-Hopkins, whose wrist shot cleanly beat American goalie John Gibson to the stick side.

Strome made it 2-0 at 14:44 when he flipped a pass from Niagara IceDogs linemate Brett Ritchie behind Gibson. U.S. defenceman Seth Jones, a potential No. 1 pick in the 2013 NHL entry draft, had no idea Strome was in front of the net when Ritchie made the pass.

Subban?s biggest save came on a breakaway by U.S. forward John Gaudreau in the first period with Canada up 1-0. Gaudreau deked to his backhand and tried to slip the puck between Subban?s legs, but the netminder simultaneously slid across the crease and closed the five hole.

But Subban was sharp throughout the game. He settled into a groove with a pair of tough stops on Vince Trocheck in the first few minutes, demonstrating to fans at the rink and across Canada that he was capable of taking his game to a higher level.

In the second period, Subban stopped a close-range chance by J.T. Miller and then saved an Alex Galchenyuk shot from the slot.

And there was Subban lunging across the crease to deny Ryan Hartman not long after Trouba scored to preserve the one-goal lead.

Canada had to kill off its share of penalties ? Mark McNeill and Phillip Danault were excellent ? but nothing came close to being a suspension. The pair was instrumental in killing off a four-minute minor to Griffin Reinhart in the second period.

Nugent-Hopkins was sent off for boarding with just under two minutes to play, but the U.S. could not score. Subban stopped Galchenyuk, among other saves.

Subban and Gibson were named the MVPs of the game for their respective teams.

Finding Your Voice: Speak Up and Change Your World in 2013 ...

Happy New Year! Over the past five years I have touched on numerous topics that are related to healing the workplace. This blog emerged out of my own experience working in an organization that needed healing on many levels.

One of the challenges that all of us face, at one time or another, is to find ways to initiate positive change so that everyone is treated with respect and treated fairly.

We all have the ability to speak up and bear witness to the injustices that we see, but it is not easy. Speaking up in this way requires that we ?find out voice? and find ways to use it. We all have a voice?some of us are perhaps more quieter than others.

Some?of us are?fortunate enough to live in Canada, which is a democratic country. Living in Canada makes it possible for us to speak up and voice our opinions and offer suggestions. It also means that we can challenge the status quo and take positive action.

Paradoxically finding one?s voice begins with listening. We must listen to our intentions, to our values, to our experience and to our intuition. Perhaps most importantly, we have to listen to other people.

Reflections on finding my voice:

  • Finding my voice whether I?m writing or speaking has been challenging for me.
  • Finding my voice means speaking up and defending what I believe in.
  • Finding my voice means having the courage to speak out against injustices.
  • Finding my voice means letting who I am emerge on the pages that I am writing.
  • Finding my voice means being authentic?it means living my values by demonstrating them in my daily actions.
  • Finding my voice means pushing myself out of my comfort zone.
  • Finding my voice means not talking so others can talk.
  • Finding my voice is one of the hardest things I?ve ever had to do.

If we want to change our workplaces, our communities and our world we need to find ?our collective voice. But it really starts with each one of us?one voice at a time.

Happy New Year

White House meeting a last stab at a fiscal deal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Amid partisan bluster, top members of Congress and President Barack Obama were holding out slim hopes for a limited fiscal deal before the new year. But even as congressional leaders prepared to convene at the White House, there were no signs that legislation palatable to both sides was taking shape.

The Friday afternoon meeting among congressional leaders and the president ? their first since Nov. 16 ? stood as a make-or-break moment for negotiations to avoid across-the-board first of the year tax increases and deep spending cuts.

Obama called for the meeting as top lawmakers alternately cast blame on each other while portraying themselves as open to a reasonable last-minute bargain.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid all but conceded that any effort at this late date was a long shot. "I don't know timewise how it can happen now," he said.

For Obama, the 11th-hour scramble represented a test of how he would balance the strength derived from his re-election with his avowed commitment to compromise. Despite early talk of a grand bargain between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that would reduce deficits by more than $2 trillion, the expectations were now far less ambitious.

Although there were no guarantees of a deal, Republicans and Democrats said privately that any agreement would likely include an extension of middle-class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes, an Obama priority that was central to his re-election campaign. The deal would also likely put off the scheduled spending cuts. Such a year-end bill could also include an extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring, officials said.

To get there, Obama and Reid would have to propose a package that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would agree not to block with procedural steps that require 60 votes to overcome.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York said he still thinks a deal could be struck.

The Democrat told NBC's "Today" show Friday that he believes the "odds are better than people think."

Schumer said he based his optimism on indications that McConnell has gotten "actively engaged" in the talks.

Appearing on the same show, Republican Sen. John Thune noted the meeting scheduled later Friday at the White House, saying "it's encouraging that people are talking."

But Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., predicted that "the worst-case scenario" could emerge from Friday's talks.

"We will kick the can down the road," he said on "CBS This Morning."

"We'll do some small deal and we'll create another fiscal cliff to deal with the fiscal cliff," he said. Corker complained that there has been "a total lack of courage, lack of leadership," in Washington.

Speaking on the Senate floor Thursday, McConnell cautioned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Nevertheless, he said he told Obama in a phone call late Wednesday that "we're all happy to look at whatever he proposes."

If a deal were to pass the Senate, Boehner would have to agree to take it to the floor in the Republican-controlled House.

Boehner discussed the fiscal cliff with Republican members in a conference call Thursday and advised them that the House would convene Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, said Boehner told the lawmakers that "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."

But Cole did not rule out Republican support for some increase in tax rates, noting that Boehner had amassed about 200 Republican votes for a plan last week to raise rates on Americans earning $1 million or more. Boehner ultimately did not put the plan to a House floor vote in the face of opposition from Republican conservatives and a unified Democratic caucus.

"The ultimate question is whether the Republican leaders in the House and Senate are going to push us over the cliff by blocking plans to extend tax cuts for the middle class," White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said. "Ironically, in order to protect tax breaks for millionaires, they will be responsible for the largest tax increase in history."

Boehner, McConnell, Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi are all scheduled to attend Friday's White House meeting with Obama. Vice President Joe Biden will also participate in the meeting, the White House said.

Despite the urgency to act, the rhetoric Thursday was quarrelsome and personal.

The House of Representatives is "being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker," Reid said on the Senate floor. He attributed Boehner's reluctance to put a version of Senate bill that raised tax rates on incomes above $250,000 for couples to fears he could lose his re-election as speaker next week.

"Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff," countered Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner.

If a deal is not possible, it should become evident at Friday's White House meeting. If that occurs, Obama and the leaders would leave the resolution to the next Congress to address in January.

Such a delay could unnerve the stock market, which performed erratically Thursday amid the developments in Washington. Economists say that if the tax increases are allowed to hit most Americans and if the spending cuts aren't scaled back, the recovering but fragile economy could sustain a traumatizing shock.

But a sentiment is taking hold that despite a black eye to its image, Congress could weather the fiscal cliff without significant economic consequences if it acts decisively next month.

"Going over is likely because at this point both sides probably see a better deal on the other side of the cliff," Jared Bernstein, Biden's former economic adviser, wrote in a blog post Thursday.

By letting current tax cuts expire and rise, Bernstein and others say, Republicans would be voting to lower taxes next month, even if not for all taxpayers. Democrats ? and Obama ? would be in a stronger position to demand that taxpayers above the $250,000 threshold pay higher taxes, instead of the $400,000 threshold that Obama proposed in his latest offer to Boehner.

And the debate over spending cuts, including changes to politically sensitive entitlement programs such as Medicare, would have to start anew.

Stallone

Stallone here! I?m not as tough as my name implies ? actually, I?m really just a big love bug.

I came into the shelter as a stray and wasn?t feeling well, but now that I?m on my special grain-free diet, I?m like a new man and I feel great! I will have to continue this diet for the rest of my life, but don?t worry, it?s really not complicated and just means getting me a certain kind of kitty food.

At 3 years old, I?m very playful and love to bat toy mice around. Since I?m such an easy-going and affectionate kitty I will make a really great family pet and can even live with other cat friends!

Come in and meet me soon, you may even get to hear my funny ?meow? for attention. And don?t forget, all new adopters receive a free first Vet visit to your choice of 16 area vets.

Camellia

Hi everyone, I?m Camellia, a 1-year-old, energetic girl who is looking for someone who wants to have fun, fun, fun! I came in to the shelter because I needed some specialized training when it came to going potty outdoors (embarrassing, I know). The staff here has worked really hard with me, and I?ve learned to go to the bathroom outside on my walks. I?ll still need to work on my training and it would be helpful if I wasn?t left alone for too long while I?m mastering this. I love attention and will roll over to show you my belly! Sometimes I don?t know my own strength when playing, so I need to be in a home without young children. If you?re an experienced dog owner looking for a pup to work and play with, then come meet me! Like all the pets at HSFN I am spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on all vaccines.

To adopt these pets

Los Angeles police offer gift cards to take guns off streets

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police traded gift cards for guns in Los Angeles on Wednesday, in a buyback program Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced as a crime-fighting response to the deadly shooting rampage in Newtown, Connecticut.

Police officers handed out $200 grocery store gift cards to people who turned in an automatic weapon, and $100 gift cards to those who provided a handgun, rifle or shotgun.

Los Angeles has held an annual gun buyback since 2009, and similar events have been organized in years past in several other cities, including Detroit and Boston. Police in San Diego had a buyback earlier this month.

Some experts say the buybacks have little effect in reducing gun violence, but Villaraigosa touted the buyback program as one step that can be taken in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14 that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adult staff members.

The shooter, Adam Lanza, killed himself and also shot to death his mother at the home he shared with her, police said.

Los Angeles normally has its gun buyback in May, but Villaraigosa announced last week that the city would have this special buyback in response to the Newtown tragedy.

"There are a number of things we can do. This is just one of them," Villaraigosa said on CNN. "We've got to also address the culture of violence that we've got in this country."

At last count, the Los Angeles gun buyback had collected 1,366 firearms, including 477 handguns and 49 assault weapons, said Vicki Curry, a spokeswoman for the mayor.

The buyback ended at 4 p.m. local time, but a final tally of guns collected was not expected to be released before Thursday. In May, the city's annual gun buyback program collected 1,673 firearms at six locations, compared to two locations used for the program on Wednesday, Curry said.

At each of the locations where the buyback was held, a line of cars stretched around the block, Curry said. People dropping off their guns were asked to leave them in the trunks of their cars, where officers retrieved the weapons. Those surrendering their guns were allowed to remain anonymous.

While officials in Los Angeles and elsewhere have said the gun buybacks help keep streets safe, a 2004 report by the National Research Council of the National Academies questioned that conclusion.

Among the report's findings were that guns surrendered in buybacks tend to be old or inherited from previous owners, and not likely to be used in crime. Also, gun owners find it easy to replace their firearms, according to the report, which was titled "Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review."

Not exactly a foreign idea - Winnipeg Free Press

Kerry Strayton, 61, is looking to retire in places such as Colombia, Uruguay and Thailand to stretch his retirement dollar.

DARRYL DYCK / THE CANADIAN PRESS Enlarge Image

Kerry Strayton, 61, is looking to retire in places such as Colombia, Uruguay and Thailand to stretch his retirement dollar.

TORONTO -- Dwindling pension benefits are forcing many Canadians to rethink how they'll spend their golden years, but that doesn't necessarily mean giving up their dreams of a sun-soaked retirement.

Some experts say with proper planning, uprooting to an exotic locale can actually help cash-strapped seniors stretch their retirement dollars.

Aside from milder temperatures, they say many of the destinations favoured by Canadians -- including parts of Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica -- offer another advantage prized by those on a fixed income: a lower cost of living.

"It's sometimes assumed that an international retirement vision or lifestyle is something that wealthy people pursue," said Rod Burylo, a Calgary-based financial adviser specializing in international retirement.

"The reality is... some people retire to Mexico because it's so darn cheap," he said.

"One could reason, therefore, that if the economy suffered and their finances suffered, they may be more inclined to retire to Mexico because... they could have a better quality of life than they could have here."

Many Canadians are having to make tough financial choices -- including prolonging their careers or downsizing their homes -- in preparing for retirement as debt-ridden governments and companies scale back benefits.

While financial considerations alone are rarely enough to prompt a drastic change of scenery, they often play an important role in the decision-making process, according to a recent survey by the BMO Retirement Institute.

The survey by one of Canada's largest banks found more than 70 per cent of Canadians aged 45 or older have given thought to where they want to live out their golden years.

But it also found that while many fantasize about retreating to faraway lands, just over 10 per cent of respondents said they were willing to follow through and leave Canadian soil.

"I think you get people moving abroad for two reasons," said Brian Burlacoff, a financial adviser with Sun Life Financial.

"You get a proportion of people who do want to spend time very purposely outside of Canada -- snowbirds, for example, in Florida or Arizona -- (and) they have a plan for that," he said.

"But the other group that you get moving away are people that have no plan and they're kind of drawing at straws because they have to find a place that's less expensive to live in order to carry out their retirement objectives."

That kind of "reactive" move, he said, is similar to trading a downtown Toronto lifestyle for a more affordable one in a neighbouring suburb.

But unlike a simple hop across municipal borders, crossing national boundaries can have serious tax and health-care implications, he warned.

And even regions where the average day-to-day costs are low can drain the savings of those without a clear budget plan, he said.

A guidebook published by the Department of Foreign Affairs lays out the potential pitfalls for those looking to retire abroad, from the loss of Canadian citizenship or residency -- and the resulting loss of health coverage -- to the intricacies of foreign tax systems.

"Many developing countries lack the resources to collect taxes on foreign-source income, so they compensate by imposing high consumption taxes or import duties," the document reads.

"Make sure you take into account all taxes, duties and fees, as well as the withholding taxes you will pay on income originating in Canada."

Burlacoff and Burylo both recommend consulting an adviser who understands the specific challenges involved, and keeping in touch throughout the preparations and after the move.

At 61, Kerry Strayton believes he's still up to a decade away from retirement, but that hasn't stopped the Richmond, B.C., resident from getting a head start on his plans to retire abroad.

He's already "actively researching" possible destinations for him and his wife, such as Colombia, Uruguay and Thailand -- places with a pleasant climate and a thriving cultural scene, that he says are accessible enough that their son and daughter will be able to visit.

Moving seems like a necessity for the couple, who Strayton says will have to live off their savings and his wife's "small, very modest" pension, given that his employer doesn't offer a pension plan of its own.

He estimates it would cost roughly $1,500 a month in one of his chosen destinations to keep the same standard of living that would cost $2,500 in Richmond.

"To be honest, living in this part of the country in particular, which is very, very expensive, it's hard to see how we would manage to have at least some kind of reasonable lifestyle," he said.

Many unknowns remain: For one thing, the couple hasn't decided whether to make a permanent move or take the more popular snowbird route.

But with several more years of squirrelling away savings ahead, the pair has some time to figure it out.

And in the meantime, Strayton said, they'll be checking out the top contenders to see which one could eventually become their new home.

New York Firefighters Killed Responding To House Fire | FOX2now ...

(CNN) ? A man convicted of killing his grandmother decades ago ambushed firefighters on Monday, fatally shooting two of them as they arrived to battle a blaze in upstate New York, police said.

Two other volunteer firefighters were wounded in the attack in the Rochester-area town of Webster. A police officer from the nearby town of Greece suffered minor shrapnel wounds when his vehicle was hit by gunfire.

Lt. Michael Chiapperini

Investigators believe the suspect, William Spengler, 62, set the original fire, then likely set himself up on a berm with a clear view of the scene and started shooting.

?It appears that it was a trap,? Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. ?There was a car and a house that were involved in flames, probably set by Mr. Spengler, who laid in wait in armament and then shot the first responders.?

Authorities do not know how Spengler ? who was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound hours after the four firefighters were shot ? obtained the weapon or weapons he used or why he opened fire, Pickering told reporters. As a convicted felon, Spengler was not allowed to legally possess weapons, but he had ?several different types of weapons? Monday, the police chief said.

Spengler was convicted in 1981 of first-degree manslaughter in the death of his grandmother and had been released on supervised parole, Pickering said.

He is believed to have lived in the home where the original fire erupted with his sister, who has not yet been accounted for, Pickering said. Their mother died sometime in the past year, the chief added.

In chilling audio heard over the scanner, a West Webster Fire Department firefighter reported ?multiple firemen shot? ? including himself, with wounds to his lower back and lower leg ? and ?shots still being fired.?

?I?m pretty sure that we have two DOAs? ? the term for dead on arrival ? ?on the street,? the wounded firefighter said. ?? They?re down and not good.?

For several hours after that Monday, the threat of gunfire stopped firefighters from battling the blaze and forced police SWAT teams to evacuate 33 people in the neighborhood of small, waterfront homes.

Eventually, seven houses were ?totally destroyed? by the fire. Although the fires were under control as of 2:30 p.m. ET, by then authorities still hadn?t been able to get in any of the homes. Pickering said it?s possible more victims could be inside.

?I?m hoping that everyone was able to escape from the inferno,? he said. ?Those houses were close together.?

With ?raging inferno? and gunfire, scene described as ?chaos?

Firefighters first arrived at the Webster fire before 6 a.m., said Rob Boutillier, the town?s fire marshal.

By then, Spengler had set up himself somewhere above the scene in a ?natural hollow, a position of cover to actually be a sniper,? Pickering explained.

The calls from firefighter came in soon after, reporting that four of them had been shot. Police officers rushed to the scene, and one of the first ones there exchanged fire, ?in all likelihood, (saving) many lives,? according to the police chief.

?When we get there, we have people down, we have raging fires, and we have gunshots going off,? Pickering said.

?It?s chaos. It?s chaos.?

Authorities worked quickly to set up a perimeter, trying to contain the situation and the shooter. Neighborhood residents were first told to ?shelter in place? because the gunman was at large, but some left their homes because of the fire.

Several people could be seen running. Police tracked some of them down, found they were neighbors seeking safety and escorted them out. Eventually, residents were whisked from the area in armored personnel carriers. All the while, there was ?this raging inferno, with black smoke everywhere,? Pickering said.

No more gunfire was exchanged after that initial burst, though police did see a man they believed to be Spengler moving at times. The police chief said he didn?t know if the police officer hit Spengler early on, but he said the medical examiner indicated that Spengler died after shooting himself in the head.

Two firefighters also died at the scene.

One of them, Lt. Michael Chiapperini, was a veteran of the West Webster Fire Department and a police lieutenant. He?d been named Firefighter of the Year just two weeks ago, and not long before that, he had volunteered to go to Long Island to help those suffering after Superstorm Sandy, according to Lt. Gov. Bob Duffy.

The other slain firefighter was Tomasz Kaczowka, who was also a 911 dispatcher. He?d been with the West Webster Fire Department for just more than a year, fire department spokesman Al Sienkiewicz said.

One firefighter escaped from the scene in his own vehicle about an hour after he was shot and was taken to a hospital by an ambulance from another location, Boutillier said. Another wounded firefighter was conscious and speaking when he was removed from the scene, he said.

The wounded firefighters were in intensive care Monday at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, officials said.

The other person wounded was a Greece, New York, police officer who was on his way to work when his car was fired upon. He suffered shrapnel wounds that Pickering described as minor.

?We work with these people everyday; they?re like our brothers,? said Pickering of the slain firefighters, as he fought back tears. ?It?s terrible.?

New shooting spurs more talk on gun control

Authorities have not said what weapons were found with Spengler, though Pickering said ?probably at least a rifle was used? to shoot the first responders.

?I know that many people are going to be asking, ?Were they assault rifles?? I don?t know that. I can?t answer that at this time,? he told reporters.

The shooting occurred amid a renewed gun control debate after the December 14 elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, that killed 26 people, most of them children. The gunman in that case, Adam Lanza, also killed his mother and himself.

The head of a lobbying group that represents first responders said the Monday shooting was ?senseless and cruel.?

?The firefighters who responded today were performing a selfless, meaningful service to their community, unaware that a cold-hearted maniac was planning to ambush them and take their lives,? said Harold Schaitberger, general president of the Washington-based International Association of Fire Fighters. ?Coming on the heels of the horrific tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and on Christmas Eve, this shooting is even harder to comprehend.?

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo described the Webster shooting as ?horrific.? And the state?s attorney general called it a ?senseless tragedy?

President Barack Obama has set a January deadline for ?concrete proposals? to deal with gun violence in the wake of the Newtown school shooting.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, has said she will introduce legislation to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, while National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre has said his group will fight any new gun restrictions, saying most gun laws now on the books are rarely enforced.

Pickering, the Webster police chief, said it was important ? in the wake of the shooting in his town and others ? to ?get a handle on gun control.? He also said more needs to be done to make sure that dangerous people aren?t in society, where they can kill.

?For the last 20 years we have been turning people loose and deinstitutionalizing people, and I think we?ve swung too far,? he said. ?I think there are still people that need to be in institutions that are a danger to themselves or others. And this is a classic example.?

Watch Your Wallet With These Personal Finance Tips

Posted by Admin on Dec 24, 2012 in PayDay Loan Blog | Comments Off

TIP! Try working with the company that does your insurance to lower your payments. This can save a lot of money for you and your family.

The current economy sucks, and many people are feeling the pain. While you may not be able to make a fortune, conserving enough to live happily is achievable. The information that you require will be outlined to you in the article below.

TIP! If you fly a lot, you may find it a worthy investment to enter a frequent flier program. It is common for credit card companies to offer frequent flyer rewards for purchases made using your card.

Looking at your finances the way a bank does can make it easier to manage your money. That means taking the time to accurately figure out your exact income as well as your exact expenses. If your expenses are variable, use high estimates. You may be happily surprised by money left over which you can tuck away into your savings account.

TIP! Get rid of unwanted items and make a little money by having a yard or garage sale. One could ask neighbors if they can sell their items for a small percentage of the sale cost.

Start saving for your child?s college fund early. College costs are increasing every year, and if you wait until they are a teenager to start saving, you may not be able to pay for their college education.

TIP! Always pay attention to your credit report. You can look at your credit report absolutely free! Make sure that this is done two times a year to make sure that there aren?t any unauthorized changes done to your report, and that someone hasn?t committed identity theft by using your information and name.

Consider using a software program to help keep track of your budget if the old ways aren?t working. These programs can track your income and expenses, as well as creating a budget plan for you with minimal effort.

TIP! If you have to live paycheck to paycheck, make sure you have overdraft protection. You may have to pay a couple of dollars monthly for the service, but overdrafts can result in very costly fees.

If you?re married then you want whichever one of you that has the best credit to apply for loans. If you have bad credit, take the time to build it with a credit card that you pay off regularly. When both of you get your credit score to a good level, then you?re in a position to get new loans but make sure to spread out your debt in an even way.

TIP! Invest in a small accordion style envelope and always have it on hand. Use the envelope to stash receipts, business cards, and other small pieces of paper you want to save.

If you participate in online banking take notice of what type of alerts are offered by your bank. Many banks will send you email or text message updates in the event of changes to your account. These simple alerts can let you know about big potential problems, such as low balances and large withdrawals, protecting you from overdrafts and even fraud.

TIP! Try to eliminate your credit card debts as fast as possible. Regardless of the amount that you owe, you are still giving up money that you could be using for other things.

Even the smallest changes in your spending can make a huge difference in the long-term when savings are involved. Stop going to the convince store or fancy coffee shop for your morning coffee, and make your own. That?s $25 per week in your pocket. Try using the bus versus your car. You may be able to save quite a bit of money with this change. You can add this money up to use for any big investments you might have in the future. It?s going to certainly be worth a lot more than any cup of coffee.

TIP! If you own any debt, pay it with your income tax. Most people blow their income tax money, rather than paying debts.

Really focus on documenting your daily expenses, and it will help you structure a plan. However, if you forget to keep up with it, it is easy to put it away and let it slip your mind. It is more effective to keep it accessible on a wall chart or whiteboard. You will look at it every day and be reminded of what you need to do.

TIP! One best practice for maintaining healthy credit is to only use two to four different credit cards. Building a credit history with a single card takes a long time, but having more than four open cards is a sign that you cannot control your finances.

Your expenses should be categorized. Make a list that includes all of your monthly, fixed expenses. Place variable expenses onto a separate list. By doing this you will find it easier to live within the limits of your budget. Staying on a budget is easier if you know how much must be paid out monthly.

TIP! Letting your profits run is one key to success in Forex trading. Use in moderation though, and don?t let your greed get the best of you.

Having a college education can be helpful in finding a job and making a good salary. People with degrees often earn exponentially more than those without. Higher education is always a good investment.

TIP! Some choose to gamble by purchasing lottery tickets when they should be putting that money toward savings. This will give you a guaranteed gain, rather than losing to an overwhelmingly risky game.

When trying to save, use an automatic transfer to deduct money from your primary account on payday and deposit it in a high-yield savings account. While it takes some time to get used to the ?missing? money, you will come to treat it like a bill that you pay yourself, and your savings account will grow impressively.

TIP! There is good debt and bad debt. A mortgage on real estate that will increase in value may one day turn into profit is a great investment that creates good debt.

So to summarize, while you might not become the richest person on the street, life does not have to be a daily financial stress either. All you need to do is put your personal finances back into order. If you decide to get rid of your financial stress, you could make your life much more enjoyable.
