Free Onlive app lets you stream Windows 7 desktop to the iPad

Streaming service OnLive has already proven itself a functional platform for remote gaming. Now, Onlive is looking to deliver the Microsoft Windows 7 experience to your iPad in a similar fashion.

Coming to the App Store on January 12th, the Onlive Desktop app will beam a version of Windows 7 from the cloud directly to your Apple tablet.

Using the same server technology OnLive employs for its gaming service, this free app provides iPad users with access to Windows staples like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint without the hassle of tearing open your tablet and jamming Intel chips directly into its motherboard.

Crossing the streams

The service has been optimised to support the iPad?s touchscreen, with functions like pinching, zooming, flick scrolling, and Aero Snap all recognised by the software.

While you can opt to use an Bluetooth keyboard if you wish, the app offers a full-featured virtual keyboard to help replicate the traditional desktop experience.

Provided your connection is strong, you will also be able to view Flash and HD video, and, of course, play hardware-intensive PC games.

Two houses, both alike in dignity

If you sign up to the free service, you're granted 2GB of cloud storage space, and access on an ?as available? basis.

For those seeking a more featured-packed service, Onlive Desktop Pro is on its way, offering 50GB of cloud storage, a cloud-accelerated browser, extra apps, and priority access for $9.99 / month.

In the meantime, curious parties will be able to download the Onlive App this Thursday and test drive Windows 7 on an Apple tablet. What is the world coming to?

Motorola/Verizon unveils Droid 4, purple Razr and Razr Maxx

Verizon Wireless

By Athima Chansanchai

Motorola and Verizon Wireless?introduced a triple threat of new Droids at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, including one dubbed "the thinnest and most powerful 4G LTE QWERTY smartphone."

The Droid 4 has been given that auspicious, audacious title, and offers access to a 4G network that spans 200 million people in 190 markets. It is expected to work at?speeds of 5 to 12 megabits per second and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps.

How thin are we talking? Somehow, they've crammed a a five-row QWERTY keyboard with edge-lit keys into?half an inch. And inside,it has a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM, as well as 16 GB of internal memory, with support for up to a 32 GB microSD card. It's meant to appeal to business users, with its "government-grade encryption to keep data secure." For those who don't want to carry more gear, it comes with an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture. The mirror mode allows user to display images and video on an HDTV. ?

Motorola Droid Razr in Purple

It's built to be a little tough, with a scratch and scrape resistant glass 4-inch qHD display and water-repellent nanocoating just in case you spill something on it. (And wipe quickly. Very, very quickly.) ?Underneath the screen, MotoCast allows for "remote streaming of photos, videos, music, documents, presentations and more from home or office computers." As is practically a norm now, it can also be used as a 4G LTE mobile hotspot that can support up to 8 other Wi-Fi'd devices.

It'll be available in a few weeks, and while it'll be powered by Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, it is on the list to be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The other two new Droids, the Razr in Purple and Razr Maxx, will also run on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network and be on the same upgrade schedule.?

For fans of the Baltimore Ravens or Prince (or anyone who happens to just like a little variety in their smartphone color), the Razr in Purple will be a treat, but it'll be basically the same Droid Razr that's been out for awhile, which is to say it's been well received and reviewed. With the usual 2-year obligation, it'll run you $200 when it comes out in the next few weeks.

Finally, in a few weeks, we'll see the Droid Razr Maxx, which Motorola is calling "the?overachiever" of the Razr family for its 21 hours of talk-time and petite figure: 8.99 mm (here in the U.S., that means 0.3 inches). It comes with 32 GB of total memory and will cost $300 with a new two-year customer agreement.

China, India skyscraper boom may herald downturn

MUMBAI, India (AP) - A skyscraper building boom in China and India may be a sign of an impending economic correction in two of Asia's largest economies, according to a new report by Barclays Capital.

Barclays has mapped an "unhealthy correlation" between construction of the world's tallest buildings and impending financial crises over the last 140 years.

Today, China is home to half of the world's skyscrapers?defined as buildings over 240 meters (787 feet) tall?currently under construction.

India, which has just two skyscrapers, is seeing its first skyscraper building boom, with 14 under construction, including the world's second-tallest tower, in the financial capital Mumbai.

"Building booms are a sign of excess credit," Andrew Lawrence, director of property research at Barclays Capital in Hong Kong, said Wednesday.

Historically, skyscraper construction has been characterized by bursts of sporadic, but intense activity that coincide with easy credit, rising land prices and excessive optimism, but often by the time skyscrapers are finished, the economy has slipped into recession, Lawrence said.

The Great Depression hit as the finishing touches were being put on three record-breaking buildings in New York: 40 Wall Street, the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building, which were all completed between 1929 and 1931, Barclays noted in a Jan. 10 report.

The economic and oil crises of the 1970s coincided with the completion of the twin towers at New York's World Trade Center, in 1972 and 1973, and Chicago's Sears Tower in 1974.

The Asian financial crisis hit as Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Towers were finished in 1997.

Dubai's $4.1 billion Burj Khalifa, completed in 2010, is now the world's tallest building. As it was being built, Dubai nearly went bust and the world slid into the Great Recession.

"Thankfully for the world economy, there is not currently a skyscraper under construction that is planned to overtake the height of the Burj Khalifa," the report said.

However, signs of trouble are escalating in China and India.

Today, China gets the dubious distinction of being the world's "biggest bubble builder," as it erects ever more and ever higher towers, Barclays said. Home to 53 percent of the 124 skyscrapers now under construction globally, China is primed to increase its stock of skyscrapers by 87 percent.

About 80 percent of new buildings are going up in tier two and three cities, away from developed coastal areas of the Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta, which Barclays called "evidence of the expanding building bubble."

Lawrence, who was lead author of the report, said China's property market is already wobbling.

The number of residential property sales has decreased 40 to 50 percent in Beijing and Shanghai and developers have slashed prices 5 to 20 percent, he said.

India, which has just two skyscrapers but is building 14 more, takes top honors for hubris: The second tallest building in the world, the Tower of India, is now under construction in Mumbai.

Nonperforming loans in India?a substantial number of them to real estate ventures?grew by nearly a third in the first half of this fiscal year, more than triple the average annual growth rate since 2006, according to the Reserve Bank of India.

"If history proves to be right, this building boom in India and China could simply be a reflection of a misallocation of capital, which may result in an economic correction for two of Asia's largest economies in the next five years," Barclays said.

Musharraf to return to Pakistan, lead party in polls (Reuters)

KARACHI (Reuters) ? Exiled former president Pervez Musharraf said on Sunday he would return to Pakistan later this month to lead his recently formed party in campaigning for a parliamentary election, despite the possibility of his arrest and concern over his security.

"There are efforts to scare me, but these people don't know that I'm not among the afraid," Musharraf told a rally of about 8,000 supporters in the commercial centre Karachi via video link from Dubai.

The former general said he would return between January 27 and 30 and dismissed concern about his security. "I have fought wars. I am not scared of danger."

Musharraf's return, to lead his All Pakistan Muslim League's campaign for an election due by 2013, would add to the political uncertainty at a time of tension between the weak civilian government and the powerful military, which sets foreign and security policies.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Musharraf resigned and went to live abroad after his allies lost a parliamentary election in 2008 and the new coalition government threatened him with impeachment.

His popularity had plummeted after he became embroiled in a row with the judiciary and briefly imposed a state of emergency in 2007.

Saudi and Pakistani sources told Reuters on Sunday that Musharraf, who seized power in a 1999 coup, planned to travel to Saudi Arabia to seek the kingdom's backing before going home.

SAUDI INDLUENCE

Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, has considerable influence in political circles in Pakistan because of its assistance to the South Asian nation's fragile economy.

"Musharraf will be travelling to Saudi soon in order to get support before he goes back to Pakistan," said a Gulf-based Saudi source familiar with the matter. A Pakistani source also said Musharraf, who is in Dubai, would go to Saudi Arabia soon.

The source declined to say what form of support he was seeking. Some reports have said Musharraf, who faces possible arrest on charges of failing to provide adequate security to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto before her assassination in 2007, will seek Saudi guarantees that he would not be detained.

He also faces threats to his life from Islamist militants seeking revenge for the crackdown he ordered against them.

In 2007, Saudi King Abdullah helped broker the return to Pakistan of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who Musharraf had sent to Saudi Arabia in 2000 under what his government said was an agreement that Sharif would stay in exile for 10 years.

Saudi sources say their country is concerned about the friction between Pakistan's army and government in recent months.

"The stability of Pakistan is very important to the region and has to be maintained," said a second Pakistani source.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari is facing his biggest political crisis since taking office in 2008, over an unsigned memo to the Pentagon seeking U.S. help to rein in Pakistan's generals, who have ruled the nation for more than half its history.

Businessman Mansoor Ijaz, in a column in the Financial Times, said a senior Pakistani diplomat had asked for the memo to be delivered. Ijaz later identified the diplomat as Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's then ambassador in Washington and a close Zardari aide.

Haqqani denies any involvement, and no evidence has emerged that the military was plotting a coup.

The Supreme Court has ordered an investigation into the matter, which could further threaten the civilian government, especially if it established a link between the memo and Zardari.

British PM Cameron criticizes Thatcher film's timing (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday criticized the making of a film showing his predecessor Margaret Thatcher as a vulnerable elderly woman.

"The Iron Lady," featuring American Meryl Streep in the main Thatcher role, opens in British cinemas on Friday. Cameron praised Streep but suggested the film should not have been made while Thatcher was still alive and suffering from dementia.

"It's a fantastic piece of acting by Meryl Streep. You can't help wondering, why do we have to have this film right now. It is a film much more about ageing and elements of dementia rather about than an amazing prime minister," he told BBC Radio 4.

"My sort of sense was a great piece of acting, a really staggering piece of acting, but a film I wish they could have made another day," he added.

The film shows Thatcher, now 86, as a confused and lonely old woman looking back on moments from her momentous but highly divisive political career [ID:nL6E8C536W].

Thatcher, Britain's first woman prime minister, ruled from 1979-1990, leading Britain into war with Argentina over the Falkand Islands and taming powerful trade unions at home.

Cameron's reservations are shared by other members of his Conservative Party, which Thatcher once led and which currently heads Britain's coalition government.

"Meryl Streep should probably get an Oscar for an amazing portrayal (but) there was too much of a concentration on Lady Thatcher's dementia and not enough on her life story, her achievements," Conservative lawmaker Louise Mensch told Reuters.

Former Conservative politician Michael Portillo told the BBC he "felt uncomfortable" about scenes highlighting her illness.

One-time Thatcher rival Michael Heseltine, who once challenged her for the Conservative leadership, took a similar view.

"I think Mrs Thatcher was a formidable prime minister and to produce a film in her later stages of life depicting the problems of advanced old age, I find extremely distasteful," he told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

US police kill 15-year-old boy in Texas

The officials said that police officers opened fire on the boy after he allegedly pointed the pellet gun at them.

"The subject pointed the weapon at officers, which in turn, the officers had to use deadly force," a police department spokesman said on Wednesday.

Police claim the boy was given plenty of time to follow police orders and lower the weapon. The boy, eighth-grader Jaime Gonzalez, was shot at least twice.

The boy had not threatened any students or teachers before he was shot dead.

Police launched an investigation into the incident, which left no other casualties.

Officials evacuated students to a nearby school and shut down all classes during the incident.

Atomic refrigerator could make coldest things possible even colder

The level of control over matter that scientists are now developing to create ultra-cold objects could also be used to create entirely new states of matter and super-powerful quantum computers, researchers added. ?

The coolest things of the future might be created using what are essentially refrigerators that work on the atomic level, researchers say.

The level of control over matter that scientists are now developing to create ultra-cold objects could also be used to create entirely?new states of matter?and super-powerful quantum computers, researchers added.

Scientists routinely cool matter to a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero,?the coldest temperature?theoretically possible, which corresponds to?minus 459.67 degrees?Fahrenheit (minus-273.15 Celsius). Still, they would like to chill matter to even-colder temperatures to better understand other extreme phenomena, such as superconductivity, where electrons zip without resistance through objects.

Now physicists reveal a new way to create ultra-cold matter, with an idea similar to how fridges work. Refrigerators pump a fluid known as a refrigerant around the area they are cooling. This fluid sucks up heat. The refrigerant is then pumped someplace where it dumps this heat.

Chill atoms

First the researchers cooled?atoms of rubidium?with lasers. When set up properly, these beams can force atoms to glow in a way that makes them emit more energy than they absorb, thus making them colder.

When the atoms gave off light as a result of being hit with the laser, this exerted a slight pressure on them. The scientists took advantage of that pressure to control the atoms, either keeping them in place or moving them around, sometimes creating collisions. [Wacky Physics: The Coolest Little Particles]

The researchers then made the atoms even colder with evaporative cooling, in which matter gets cooled in much the same way as a cup of coffee loses its warmth ? the hottest atoms are allowed to evaporate, leaving behind the colder ones.

Finally, the researchers used webs of lasers known as "optical lattices." When two atoms are made to collide within the optical lattice, the excitations of one suppress the excitations of the other, a phenomenon called "orbital excitation blockade." The excited atoms are then removed from the system -- taking away entropy, the amount of energy available for work -- thus causing the remaining atoms to chill down.

In experiments with rubidium atoms in optical lattices, the physicists successfully demonstrated they could remove entropy from atoms via orbital excitation blockade. In principle, they can reach temperatures 10-to-100-times colder than currently achieved, to temperatures of tenths-to-hundredths-of-a-billionth of a degree above absolute zero. However, they likely need lasers of longer wavelengths to do so in real life, said researcher Markus Greiner, a physicist at Harvard University.

Exotic matter

Their research could help "create exotic new states of matter, ones never seen before," Greiner told LiveScience. "Who knows what the properties of these materials might be?"

The ability to create perfect arrays of atoms could also be "a great starting point for a general-purpose quantum computer," Greiner said. Quantum computers exploit the?bizarre nature of quantum physics?? such as how subatomic particles can effectively spin in two opposite directions at the same time ? to run calculations exponentially faster than normal computers for certain problems.

Research into?quantum computers?has mostly been on devices designed to each crunch one specific kind of problem, but optical lattices could lead to general-purpose quantum computers that, like modern personal computers, can tackle many different kinds of problems.

The scientists detailed their findings in the Dec. 22 issue of the journal Nature.

Google TV adds LG to the fold, will demo new hardware along with Sony, Vizio (update: video, pics!)

The second round of Google TV hardware will be in full swing at CES 2012, and the folks at Mountain View just officially announced LG is joining the list of hardware partners at the show. While we know Logitech was taking a pass on the latest hardware, previously announced partners Samsung, Sony and Vizio are still in and the latter two will have new hardware to show next week. While this morning's announcement by Marvell revealed the platform's switch to ARM processors from the Intel chips it launched on, the company mentioned MediaTek is also on board to build compatible chipsets, while the line of products from LG will run on the company's own L9 setup. LG's press release (included after the break) reveals the HDTVs it's bringing out will feature its Cinema 3D FPR technology as well as support for a "Magic Remote QWERTY" that combines its gesture and voice control Magic Remote with, you guessed it, a QWERTY keyboard. It will have two lines of TVs based on the Android OS, while it continues to feature its own NetCast setup in other displays. While Samsung is mentioned as building new devices, it does not appear they'll have any to show off just yet, which matches the rumors that had gone around earlier.

Update: LG has posted some pics of the Google TV sets (above, after the break) featuring its custom interface, although we're still waiting for a peek at that remote. According to the company, users will have the option of using LG's UI or the default Google TV build, so whichever way you prefer should work. The Google TV team has also uploaded a fresh trailer on YouTube ahead of CES, featuring several apps and promising this is just the beginning -- check it out embedded after the break.

Bachmann quits GOP race; Romney on to NH (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Michele Bachmann has ended her presidential campaign ? leaving her supporters up for grabs as Rick Santorum tries to become the conservative heavyweight in the Republican race.

Santorum's near-tie with Iowa caucus winner Mitt Romney topped a rise from deep in the polls to contender for the presidential nomination.

Bachmann said Wednesday she has "decided to stand aside" but would continue fighting to overturn what she called President Barack Obama's "socialist policies."

Like Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry took a blow in the caucuses ? finishing fifth. He flew home to decide whether to stay in the race. It appears the answer is "yes." He tweeted Wednesday that he was bound for South Carolina.

Meanwhile, Romney jetted to New Hampshire to continue campaigning.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A squeaker of an Iowa victory in hand, Mitt Romney headed into the New Hampshire primary insisting that staying power sets him apart from runners-up Rick Santorum and Ron Paul and the rest of the GOP presidential field. Two rivals already looked shaky ? last-place finisher Michele Bachmann canceled a campaign trip Wednesday and Rick Perry was heading home to Texas to think things over.

Romney shrugged off the promise of sharper criticism from his GOP rivals and President Barack Obama's re-election team now that he's narrowly carried the first contest of the nomination.

"I've got a big target on me now," Romney said Wednesday, adding that doesn't faze him. "I've got broad shoulders. I'm willing to handle it."

Fourth-place finisher Newt Gingrich got the attacks off to a quick start, saying the Iowa caucus results show "three out of four Republicans repudiated Mitt Romney. How can you take seriously somebody after that kind of campaign?"

The former Massachusetts governor was declared the winner in the wee hours Wednesday ? by just eight votes ? bringing down the curtain on an improbable first act in the campaign to pick a candidate to challenge Obama in the fall.

Romney and Santorum each collected almost a fourth of the vote. The Iowa GOP said Romney got 30,015 votes, to 30,007 for Santorum, whose late surge carried him to a near win after months languishing in the depths of opinion polls.

"Game on," declared Santorum, jaw set. He easily outdistanced most other contenders to emerge as Romney's top challenger and the conservative of the moment.

Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman who finished in a distant sixth, canceled a campaign trip Wednesday to South Carolina, where she had hoped to court Christian conservatives and tea partyers. Instead, she planned a news conference late Wednesday morning, campaign manager Keith Nahigan told The Associated Press.

Nahigan would not say whether Bachmann intends to drop out. Low on money, her campaign appeared in disarray. But Bachmann told supporters Tuesday night she would carry on.

Perry, the governor of Texas, said he was going home to reassess his candidacy after finishing fifth in the caucuses.

Meanwhile, Romney added to his already-formidable national network by announcing the endorsement of Sen. John McCain, who twice won the New Hampshire primary and was the GOP presidential nominee in 2008.

In a sign of the acrimony ahead, Santorum said McCain's nod was to be expected and took a jab: "John is a more moderate member of the Republican team, and I think he fits in with Mitt's view of the world."

Romney portrayed himself as the best foil to Obama and said he had the national campaign team and ample fundraising needed to endure the march to the GOP convention this summer. "That's something I think other folks in this race are going to find a little more difficult to do," he predicted. Romney did interviews on all three network TV morning shows Wednesday.

On his campaign plane bound for New Hampshire, Romney told reporters he'd spoken to all his rivals except Gingrich Tuesday night and had gotten only two hours of sleep.

In all, more than 122,000 straw ballots were cast, a record for Iowa Republicans, and the outcome was a fitting conclusion to a race as erratic as any since Iowa gained the lead-off position in presidential campaigns four decades ago.

Returns from all 1,774 precincts showed both Romney with 24.55 percent support and Santorum with 24.54 percent. Texas congressman Paul drew 21.5 percent of the votes.

The results are non-binding when it comes to picking delegates to the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla. But an Associated Press analysis showed Romney would win 13 delegates and Santorum 12, if there were no changes in their support as the campaign wears on.

Paul ran third, ahead of Gingrich, the former House speaker. Both vowed to carry the fight to New Hampshire's primary next week and beyond.

Jon Huntsman, who skipped Iowa but is making a run at New Hampshire, said the "kind of jumbled-up outcome" of the caucuses leaves it an open race.

"Who would have guessed that Rick Santorum tooling around in his pickup truck would have gone from nowhere to practically winning the Iowa caucus?" the former Utah governor said on CBS.

Romney's slim victory also drew Democrats' disdain. Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described him as "limping into New Hampshire."

Romney is heavily favored in New Hampshire's Jan. 10 primary, with contests in South Carolina and Florida packed into the final weeks of the month.

Poised to become the front-runner's chief agitator, Gingrich is welcoming Romney to New Hampshire with a full-page ad in the state's largest newspaper that jabs him as a "Timid Massachusetts Moderate."

The day before, Gingrich, who has repeatedly vowed to stay positive in his party's nomination contest, called Romney a liar on national television. Speaking to supporters later, he made clear that he wouldn't back down.

Paul was joining Santorum and Romney in New Hampshire this week to try to demonstrate his third-place finish in Iowa wasn't a fluke. And the candidates will meet Huntsman, who began ratcheting up Romney criticism of his own in recent days.

Speaking to New Hampshire supporters while the votes were still being counted in Iowa, Huntsman questioned Romney's belief system, suggesting he's "been on three sides of every issue."

Romney has largely ignored the direct attacks so far. He's amassed a ton of money and built a campaign organization in several states that staffers say will be able to go the distance to the nomination. In a show of force Tuesday, Romney became the first candidate to purchase television advertising in Florida, whose primary is Jan. 31.

Some of his competitors ? most notably Santorum ? have given virtually no thought to contests beyond South Carolina's Jan. 21 primary. Santorum struggled to pay for campaign transportation in recent days, never mind television advertising in states beyond New Hampshire.

He's spending just $16,000 to air a television ad on New Hampshire cable stations this week. Romney is spending $264,000 on television advertising in New Hampshire, $260,000 in South Carolina and $609,000 in Florida, according to figures obtained by The Associated Press.

Gingrich doesn't have any television ads reserved going forward. But with two debates set for New Hampshire this weekend, he's likely to use his national audience to drive his anti-Romney message.

And Paul, while often dismissed as unelectable by members of his own party, has strong organizations in states beyond Iowa and is spending more than Romney on television advertising in New Hampshire this week. He's spending roughly $368,000 there and another $127,000 in South Carolina.

Paul told supporters his was one of two campaigns with the resources to do the distance and "believe me this momentum is going to continue."

Despite its importance as the lead-off state, Iowa has a decidedly uneven record of predicting national winners. It sent Obama on his way in 2008, but McCain finished a distant fourth here.

Romney, who finished second in Iowa in 2008 despite a costly effort, barnstormed across the state in the race's final days, running as a conservative businessman with the skills to fix the economy.

Santorum, Gingrich, Perry and Bachmann argued that Romney wasn't nearly conservative enough on the economy and social issues such as abortion. They vied for months to emerge as the alternative.

That effort continues this week, half a continent away.

"We are off to New Hampshire because the message I shared with you tonight is not an Iowa message or an Iowa and South Carolina message," Santorum told his Iowa supporters. "It's a message that will resonate across this land."

The Syrian protesters' cry for help

Arab nations and the West are closer to acting against the Assad regime ? perhaps even militarily ? to end the slaughter of pro-democracy protesters. The consequences of inaction are becoming worse than no action.

One year on, the Arab Spring has liberated three countries ? Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt ? although they are only in North Africa. Now a pivotal nation in the Middle East, Syria, could be next ? depending on the conscience of the world.

The almost-daily killings of Syrian protesters by the Assad regime is finally forcing serious diplomatic action. In coming days, both the West and other Arab states will need to respond to the worldwide revulsion over televised videos of Syrians being slaughtered simply for demanding freedom.

Two pieces are already in place. A key player, Turkey, has turned on its onetime ally next door after thousands of protesters were killed. And international economic sanctions are biting the regime, although they don?t seem to be making much of a difference in Assad?s killing machine.

Last week, the 22-nation Arab League sent about 70 observers to Syria to try to curb the massacres, simply by their presence in major cities. Their efforts are too little and highly suspect, especially as they are led by a military general from Sudan held responsible for killings in Darfur.

And the Arab League?s advisory body, the Arab Parliament, insisted Sunday that the observers leave. President Bashar al-Assad is violating a pact with the league by, for example, not allowing journalists into Syria. And wherever the observers are present, the regime simply hides its tanks and relies on snipers to kill opponents.

All this is leading the White House to seriously weigh international options for humanitarian aid and a safety zone for opposition Syrians, much like the use of military force in Libya. ?If the Syrian regime continues to resist and disregard Arab League efforts, the international community will consider other means to protect Syrian civilians,? a State Department spokesman said Dec. 27.

That effort will be helped by a unity pact signed in Cairo last Friday between Syria?s two main opposition groups. The agreement promises a democratic Syria and asks for the international community to protect the protesting civilians.

Both the West and Arab leaders know that the regime?s days are numbered. Last Friday, an estimated half-million Syrians were out in protest, the largest demonstrations in months. Dozens were killed by the regime.

If Arab leaders would now ask the United Nations to approve a NATO-led no-fly zone over portions of Syria, then the world could finally see a Libyan-style liberation.

The big difference, however, is that regime change in Syria would affect the interests of Iran and Israel, and possibly cause a refugee crisis. The unknown consequences of a power vacuum in Syria have put a damper so far on the West?s humanitarian impulse to intervene.

The difficult task of finding a balance between saving lives and avoiding the unknown in the Middle East has now tipped toward saving lives. Syrians and most Arabs are ready to act. Will the West and the UN help them?

Chinese man dies in first bird flu case since 2010

The health department in Guangdong province, where Shenzhen is located, announced on Saturday that the bus driver died after his lung, heart and liver functions deteriorated.

"So far, 120 people who have had close contact with him have not presented abnormal symptoms," it said in a statement.

Chinese and Hong Kong authorities have been working closely together since December 21 after live poultry supplies were suspended to the glitzy financial hub following the discovery of infected birds.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong health department said in a statement authorities would heighten their vigilance "and continue to maintain stringent port health measures in connection with this development".

China is considered one of the nations most at risk of bird flu epidemics because it has the world's biggest poultry population and many chickens in rural areas are kept close to humans.

In the last reported human case in China, a young pregnant woman died of bird flu in June 2010 in the central province of Hubei.

The bus driver's death brought to 27 the number of people who have died in China since 2003, out of 41 reported human cases.

Authorities in Hong Kong have raised the bird flu alert level to "serious" since they discovered infected chickens, resulting in major disruptions to poultry supplies over the busy Christmas period.

The avian influenza virus has killed more than 330 people around the world, with Indonesia the worst-hit country. Most human infections are the result of direct contact with infected birds.

Scientists fear H5N1 could mutate into a form readily transmissible between humans, with the potential to cause millions of deaths.

Turkey airstrike: mourners pummel local official (AP)

ISTANBUL ? Angry Kurds on Saturday assaulted a local official who sought to offer condolences in a village in Turkey where 35 civilians were mistakenly killed in a military airstrike meant to target Kurdish rebels.

The televised spectacle of men throwing punches and stones at Naif Yavuz, a district governor, was the latest eruption of fury over Wednesday's airstrikes, and it highlighted the deep gulf of trust between the Turkish state and large segments of its ethnic Kurd minority.

Clashes also broke out for a third day between police and protesters in several cities in the mainly Kurdish southeast, the state-run Anadolu agency reported. Thirty-six people were detained in the city of Sanliurfa. There were peaceful protests in several other cities.

The strikes by F-16 jets, guided by intelligence from drones, hit a group of Kurdish smugglers and resulted in one of the highest single-day civilian death tolls in Turkey's decades-old war with Kurdish rebels, setting off several days of violent demonstrations in mostly Kurdish cities.

The rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, labeled a terrorist group by Turkey and the West, threatened retaliation and urged protesters to mobilize. The group, however, is considerably weakened since the peak of its military powers in the 1990s and its influence is largely confined to the poor southeast, where calls for autonomy and an end to discrimination resonate most strongly.

"No one should have any doubt that their blood will be avenged. The Kurdistan freedom movement will make sure that this massacre is accounted for," Firat, a pro-Kurdish news agency, quoted rebel commander Murat Karayilan as saying.

"If the Kurdish people do not want their children to die, they must now say 'enough' and they must rise up everywhere and go out in the streets," said Karayilan, who is based in the mountains of northern Iraq.

Kurdish rebels have routinely used the border region to launch attacks on Turkish targets, slipping into Turkey on some of the same rugged paths used by fuel and cigarette smugglers for years.

Turkish officials have promised a full investigation into the botched airstrike, and said those responsible will be held to account. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan telephoned the families of the victims in the village of Gulyazi in Sirnak province to express condolences, and his voice was broadcast through a loudspeaker.

"We share your grief, your pain is our pain," the Anadolu agency quoted Erdogan as saying. "Everyone must rest assured that all kind of work is under way in relation to the issue."

The Show TV channel showed one man telling Erdogan on the telephone: "They didn't deserve to die in this way."

Erdogan replies: "The issue is not that they were smugglers. You know the area, it is a very sensitive area, it is not possible for them (the military) to recognize each and every person."

Footage from the Dogan news agency of the visit of Yavuz, the district governor, revealed the bitter feeling toward figures representing the state in a province where the conflict has long disrupted life.

The images show men booing, lunging forward and pummeling Yavuz as his aides try to hustle him down a road lined with parked cars and bleak, snow-covered slopes. At one point, dazed and disheveled, he runs down an embankment to get away from the crowd. Yavuz was taken to a hospital for a checkup, according to reports.

Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay visited bereaved families in a house and told Anadolu that members of a "party," an apparent reference to political activists, provoked the attack on Yavuz and that the families were disturbed by the incident and apologized for it.

Opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who plans to visit the region on Sunday, said the government has yet to explain how the intelligence that led to the airstrike was compiled, and who exactly was involved.

"It seems that the incident was caused by incorrect intelligence," he said. "Who provided this intelligence to the military headquarters? They say no country would bomb its own people, but it has. Who will account for this?"

Turkey's National Intelligence Organization, known by its Turkish acronym MIT, has denied reports it provided the information that led to the airstrike.

The United States recently deployed four Predator drones to Turkey from Iraq to aid Ankara in its fight against the rebels.

Also Saturday, Turkish media reported that two suspected Kurdish rebels were killed in a police raid in Diyarbakir, the main city in southeastern Turkey. The Anadolu agency said the rebels ignored calls to surrender and threw hand grenades at police surrounding their hideout. A firefight ensued, and the suspects died after jumping out of the building.

The Turkish government has sought to reconcile with disaffected Kurds, allowing Kurdish-language institutes and private Kurdish courses as well as Kurdish television broadcasts. But Kurdish activists cite police roundups of Kurdish politicians, journalists and others suspected of rebel links as a sign of intolerance toward the minority.
