A Battle Royale online over origin of 'The Hunger Games'

Some claim that 'The Hunger Games' is a rip-off of the 1999 Japanese series 'Battle Royale.' But the storyline of a death match being employed by authoritarian rulers dates back to the Roman Empire.

It's not unusual that "The Hunger Games" movie's arrival in theaters has been accompanied by feverish anticipation on the Internet. The online world is easily and often set ablaze by enthusiastic fandom, and Susanne Collins' wildly popular series of novels about a dystopian future where teenagers fight to the death on television has sold millions of copies.

But it's not just fandom that's fueling "The Hunger Games" online fire. It's also being fed by controversy: specifically, whether Ms. Collins' series is a "rip-off" of Japanese novel "Battle Royale."

Certainly, the debate online is energetic. A quick Google search of "hunger games battle royale" turns up half a million results with headlines like "Why the 'The Hunger Games's Snub of 'Battle Royale' Matters," "5 Reasons The Hunger Games Isn't Battle Royale," and "Who Would Win in a Fight?: Battle Royale vs. The Hunger Games." YouTubers debate the similarities and differences among clips and trailers of the originals.?

A description of Koushun Takami?s book, published in 1999, makes those similarities clear. In a near-future dystopia, a despotic government selects teenagers by lottery to participate in the titular competition, in which the youths are thrown into the wilderness with a variety of weapons in order to participate in a televised death match. There are also commercial similarities: Battle Royale, too, made a successful jump to the big screen in a 2000 cult-classic release directed by Kinji Fukasaku. (Quentin Tarantino called it his "favorite movie of the last 20 years.")

But proponents of "The Hunger Games" being its own work have plausible arguments too. They note that?"The Hunger Games" is at its heart a science-fiction story set long after a global war, whereas "Battle Royale" is more of a near-future, modern-world thriller. They also argue that "Games" is about broader revolutionary themes, while "Battle" is focused on simple, visceral survival. And of course, the violent, bloody "Battle" is not the young adult novel that "Games"?is.

Despite their fans' passion over the heritage of "Games," neither author appears interested in fueling the debate. Collins told The New York Times that she only learned of Battle Royale after she submitted her first book to her publisher. ?I had never heard of that book or that author until my book was turned in. At that point, it was mentioned to me, and I asked my editor if I should read it. He said: ?No, I don?t want that world in your head. Just continue with what you?re doing.? ?? And Takami told ABC News that he was amused by the debate, though he appreciated his fans' enthusiasm.

All in all, it seems to be another case of there being nothing new under the sun. After all, both novels and movies were predated by Stephen King's novella-turned-blockbuster "The Running Man," which was about ? surprise, surprise ? a reality-television death match run by a totalitarian government in a dystopian future. All three stories drew from books like George Orwell's "1984" and William Golding's "Lord of the Flies." And if one follows the trail back long enough, you eventually reach the Roman circuses, which were ? you guessed it ? real death matches employed by absolute rulers to keep the population in line.

And so long as their readers enjoy their stories, the authors are not concerned. "I think every novel has something to offer," says Takami. "If readers find value in either book, that?s all an author can ask for."

Air Force debated disposal of 9/11 remains

(AP) ? Newly released Pentagon documents show that Air Force officers debated briefly about burial at sea before concluding that 1,321 unidentifiable fragments of remains from the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon should be treated as medical waste and incinerated.

A string of emails running from Aug. 5-7, 2002, reveal that an unidentified Air Force colonel suggested scattering the already cremated remains at sea. A second official ? a civilian and ? said it may be appropriate to also have witnesses and a chaplain present.

Their arguments that the 9/11 remains weren't just normal waste were rejected by others who concluded the material was medical waste and should not be treated like human remains.

The emails were among nearly 2,000 pages of documents released by the Pentagon on Friday detailing operations at the mortuary at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, investigations into problems and mishandling of war dead and other remains there and records about the disposal of body fragments.

The disclosure came hours after senior Pentagon officials met with the families of some of the victims of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon to provide greater details about the incineration and dumping of small amounts of residual remains ? potentially of their loved ones ? in a landfill.

Last month's disclosure that incinerated 9/11 remains were sent to a landfill triggered outrage and demands for additional information about the practice, which was ended in June 2008. Since then the Air Force has put remnants in urns and disposed of them at sea from Navy or Coast Guard ships.

The emails, however, back up claims that there was a debate in the months after 9/11 over how best to treat small body fragments from the Pentagon rubble that could not be individually identified and were often mixed with other material such as dirt and concrete.

In the string of emails titled "Group F bio waste," one colonel said, "I do like the idea of spreading the ashes at sea in that it is a neutral arena." And the colonel asks for written direction to set up the sea burial.

The response, from another unidentified official, said that Personnel Command at the military's Mortuary Affairs said that the contract says that no medical waste can be returned to the military services. And that "powder and ashes from the incineration of the material and the containers that were used for the burning is to be disposed of as normal waste."

The email continued, "We should not be attempting to spread the residue as sea, as it could possible (sic) send a message to the next of kin that we are disposing human remains and that is not the case."

And the final conclusion was to immediately dispose of all the material.

A colonel acknowledged the decision, adding only that "my point, as you are aware of, is that Group F is not your normal set of medical waste."

The response, from a civilian, said "totally agree" and said the decision was coordinated with higher headquarters' officials. The civilian added, "Understand Group F was special."

The final email suggested that some may have believed this was a decision that might be challenged later, as it warned other recipients to keep the email record "as proof of our coordination."

Officials and documents made public Friday laid out some of the different categories of remains from the 9-11 attack on the Pentagon. The first group included intact victims and the second was remains that were not intact but the team was able to identify.

"Group C" was eventually positively identified as the human remains of 25 victims, which were later cremated and buried at Arlington Cemetery. Group D was mixed human remains that were not individually identified but found to not be associated with any of the terrorists, and they were also targeted for release to Arlington.

Group E was remains of the terrorists, which were sent to the FBI. And Group F was 1,321 portions tagged by the FBI that were "non-associable" fragments that could not be further identified and were mixed with fragments of non-biological material.

At a news conference Friday, Jo Ann Rooney, the acting defense undersecretary for personnel and readiness, said that some of the Group F remains included biological material that may not have been human and it could not be determined if there were terrorist remains mixed in. It could, she said, have been "something from someone's lunch."

The practice at the time, in a situation like that, she said, would be to treat the latter group of remains as medical waste.

Rooney met with about 35 family members for about 2 1/2 hours Friday morning and said later, "The victims deserve the utmost care, dignity and respect with regard to their treatment. That's what they and their families received."

And she said that the 2002 debate about the disposal of the 9/11 remains spread across the department into senior leaders.

"Truly, again, the idea was we wanted to do the best we could for dignity and care for the remains," she said.

The first revelations of the disposal came last month when the head of an independent panel, retired Gen. John Abizaid, released a report that assessed management problems at the at the Air Force mortuary at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

His work was triggered by disclosures last fall about the mishandling of remains of American war dead at Dover in 2010.

According to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, an independent federal investigative agency, the Air Force has begun disciplinary procedures against former Dover mortuary commander Col. Robert Edmondson and another former supervisor, Trevor Dean, in connection with allegations they retaliated against workers who blew the whistle on the mishandling of human remains there.

Brig. Gen. Eden Murrie, the director of Air Force services, said Friday that the disciplinary procedures would be completed in mid- to late-April. Those actions are in addition to earlier censures taken against those two and one other employee in the fall for mismanagement at Dover.

Gen. Norton Schwartz, the Air Force chief of staff, told reporters late last month that the actions taken by the Dover mortuary were based on written guidance issued in March 2002 by David Chu, who was the Pentagon personnel chief under Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.

Interesting article so I figured I would post it....

Courtesy of Marcie Geffner, bankrate.comIf anything is certain about the foreclosure crisis, it's that it isn't over. That fact has important implications, not only for people losing their homes, but also for those planning to sell or?buy?a?home?this year.As of January, about 3 million properties were in foreclosure, headed that way or already owned by banks, according to CoreLogic, an information, analytics and?business?services?company in Santa Ana, Calif.Approximately 1.6 million of those homes were believed to be within the so-called shadow inventory, a supply of foreclosure properties not yet listed for sale. It's a major stumbling block to a housing recovery, says Mark Fleming, chief economist of CoreLogic."It puts downward pressure on home prices, which hurts home sales and building activity," Fleming said in a statement.Given that prelude, here's what sellers and buyers can expect.Foreclosures and short sales have widened the gap between sellers' and buyers' perceptions of prices. Sellers "think their home is worth more than it really is" and buyers "think the prices are too high," says Louis Cammarosano, general manager at HomeGain, a real estate information website in Emeryville, Calif. One cause of that gap is realty?brokers'?tendency to scrub foreclosures and short sales from comparable sales data used to set sellers' asking prices. While sellers might feel a moral justification for that approach, Cammarosano says it's "disingenuous" because the status of the seller's?mortgage?isn't important to buyers."(Just because) you happen to be paying your mortgage, that doesn't mean the buyer has to step into your shoes and pay your inflated price," he says.Traditionally, mortgage rates have been something of a wild card for homebuyers. But that's not the case today because the Federal Reserve has announced its intention to keep rates low at least through late 2014. That's not a guarantee, but it has taken some of the urgency out of homebuying and put more buyers into a wait-and-see pattern."The perception that prices could go lower, a lot of foreclosures in the pipeline and (the expectation) that rates will remain low -- that's certainly keeping some people on the sidelines," Cammarosano says.Buyers might be reluctant to purchase a home in a neighborhood plagued by foreclosures and short sales. But Stephen Israel, president of Buyer's Edge Co., a real estate?brokerage?in Bethesda, Md., says buyers can take a clue from real estate investors who are looking at areas that have been hard hit, yet might be prime for a turnaround."Investors are interested in neighborhoods that were beat up by foreclosures and that have other redeeming features that they then believe will be the first to bounce back," he says. Those redeeming features might include easy access to public transportation, well-regarded schools, attractive shopping centers and other positive infrastructure elements. Neighborhoods that have such amenities can be "really interesting pockets, where there could be some very good values," Israel says.Foreclosure and short sale homes are often, though not always, in worse shape than other homes on the market. That's especially problematic for buyers if a home has been vacant a long time because neglect can result in problems in plumbing, heating, cooling, electrical and other systems."There is a big difference," Israel says, "between a property that has been vacant a few weeks and one that has been vacant a year or more."A home that's in poor shape might not be a bad buy if the buyer understands the risks, he adds.Sometimes, though, those risks can be difficult to assess if the term of vacancy isn't known or the water, sewer, electricity and gas have been shut off. The utilities not being in service is "an interesting part of this equation that people miss all the time," Israel says. The bottom line for buyers is that they need to "buy smart," to use Israel's term, researching neighborhoods and being aware of a home's actual condition beyond its cosmetic appearance. The bottom line for sellers, Cammarosano says, is that they need to get serious about pricing, cleaning, decluttering, staging and improving the value and desirability of their home."That's getting real," he says. "And if that's not what you want, don't sell it."Posted by Bradford Miller Law, P.C.Real Estate Law, Landlord Tenant Law, Estate Planning134 N. Avoid Hassle With This Great Home Improvement Advice | Bathroom ...

Before deciding on a project, determine what improvements would be most valuable based on your location. For instance, Californians may want to install air conditioning instead of a fireplace if only able to do one or the other. Outdoor swimming pools are great additions in the western states, but may not be desired in New England.

You keep a file with copies of all pertinent documents, like inspection reports, permit applications and the permits themselves. If a contractor is not prepared to provide you with these items, think twice about hiring him.

Make sure the contractors under consideration are properly licensed. You can easily find out this information by looking at your state government?s website or by calling them. If a contractor is not properly licensed, it can be a wake up call that they are either scam artists or not knowledgeable enough to get licensed.

If you decide to hire a contractor to do your home improvement, reputation is far more important than getting the cheapest price. In many cases, the less reputable contractor can offer those cheaper prices by doing shoddy work and using inferior materials. You may find that once the job is complete, there may be additional work needed to correct mistakes and oversights. A poor home improvement job could put you and your family at risk, as well. Don?t settle for any contractor that you don?t feel you can trust.

Tired of looking at that old dresser in the bedroom? Try to give them new life by adding a new finish. You can get a new to you furniture that looks nice and save yourself a ton of money. There are many colors you can stain your furniture, too.

When you are thinking about home improvements, have you considered the condition your porch is in recently? This is one of the first areas of the home that people notice when approaching your home. Keep it tidy and make it interesting with unique lights, or beautiful flower arrangements. Your home will be worth more if you make these changes.

You should consider having a combo unit if you reside in a small place without the space to have a washer and dryer. Various combo washer-dryers can be fitted to replace the space for a dishwasher. A combo unit will work to wash your clothes and dry them.

Consider installing motion-sensitive lights when you are ready to light up your home?s exterior. Motion activated lights add that extra bit of security, because they can scare a potential thief, and the light will alert you to their presence. This translates into lowering your electric bills.

There is more to typical home improvement jobs than many think. It may take a good bit of homework, but in the end you will find out that it was worth it when you and your family enjoy all the benefits of your improved home. If you use these tips you?ll start successfully completing jobs.

Hot pepper compound could help hearts

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? The food that inspires wariness is on course for inspiring even more wonder from a medical standpoint as scientists have reported the latest evidence that chili peppers are a heart-healthy food with potential to protect against the No. 1 cause of death in the developed world. The report was part of the 243rd National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), being held in San Diego the week of March 26.

The study focused on capsaicin and its fiery-hot relatives, a piquant family of substances termed "capsaicinoids." The stuff that gives cayennes, jalapenos, habaneros and other chili peppers their heat, capsaicin already has an established role in medicine in rub-on-the-skin creams to treat arthritis and certain forms of pain. Past research suggested that spicing food with chilies can lower blood pressure in people with that condition, reduce blood cholesterol and ease the tendency for dangerous blood clots to form.

"Our research has reinforced and expanded knowledge about how these substances in chilies work in improving heart health," said Zhen-Yu Chen, Ph.D., who presented the study. "We now have a clearer and more detailed portrait of their innermost effects on genes and other mechanisms that influence cholesterol and the health of blood vessels. It is among the first research to provide that information."

The team found, for instance, that capsaicin and a close chemical relative boost heart health in two ways. They lower cholesterol levels by reducing accumulation of cholesterol in the body and increasing its breakdown and excretion in the feces. They also block action of a gene that makes arteries contract, restricting the flow of blood to the heart and other organs. The blocking action allows more blood to flow through blood vessels.

"We concluded that capsaicinoids were beneficial in improving a range of factors related to heart and blood vessel health," said Chen, a professor of food and nutritional science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "But we certainly do not recommend that people start consuming chilies to an excess. A good diet is a matter of balance. And remember, chilies are no substitute for the prescription medications proven to be beneficial. They may be a nice supplement, however, for people who find the hot flavor pleasant."

Chen and his colleagues turned to hamsters for the study, animals that serve as stand-ins for humans in research that cannot be done in people. They gave the hamsters high-cholesterol diets, divided them into groups, and supplemented each group's food with either no capsaicinoids (the control group) or various amounts of capsaicinoids. The scientists then analyzed the effects.

In addition to reducing total cholesterol levels in the blood, capsaicinoids reduced levels of the so-called "bad" cholesterol (which deposits into blood vessels), but did not affect levels of so-called "good" cholesterol. The team found indications that capsaicinoids may reduce the size of deposits that already have formed in blood vessels, narrowing arteries in ways that can lead to heart attacks or strokes.

Capsaicinoids also blocked the activity of a gene that produces cyclooxygenase-2, a substance that makes the muscles around blood vessels constrict. By blocking it, muscles can relax and widen, allowing more blood to flow.

Why these kids? Part One ? Mama'ing Again

Okay, another recent post was by the blogger asking why THESE kids?

(as I?m typing, I can see this is going to be multi-part)

One motive is put forward: money.

It is cheaper to adopt from foster care.? This *is* a reason people go this route, at least at first and to some degree.? I recently inquired on a situation where a birth mother was asking for someone with very specific requirements.? Well, *extremely* few adoptive families meet her requirements; I do.? So I inquired.? I sent my reply to the agency as well as a ?dear birthmom letter.?? The agency?s reply wasn?t about whether the birth mom would be interested in us or anything of the sort.? It was simply to let us know that the fees associated with this child would run about $36,000.? Seriously?? So what should this mother do?? She doesn?t feel she can raise the child and yet the handful of adoptive families who meet her requirements can?t afford to pay that sort of money before the child?s birth.

But with my three?? I won?t pay a dime towards their adoption.? The state will pay my attorney, the state?s attorney, the children?s attorney.? The state will pay for all the filing, paperwork, etc.? The state pays the adoption worker, her supervisor, the person who redacts the file, etc.? I don?t have a clue how much the actual costs are (though I?d guess a WHOLE lot less than $36K!), but my tax money and my neighbor?s tax money is paying for it.? And while they do?? I?m getting the foster care stipend that helps me take care of their needs whether their new suits and pretty dresses or their gymnastics and swim lesson or the new furniture and bikes.? They deserve the absolute best and I?m glad I had a year of a little more money to spend on them!? They came from so little.? The zoo, restaurants, fairs, pictures in the fields of wildflowers, homeschool programs, etc are so worth it.? They deserve anything and everything I can get them while the state is working out making them mine forever.

Okay, so the children come with an adoption subsidy also.? This is help after the adoption.? Some may call it a paycheck.? Well, maybe not.? Here, the adoption subsidy is a fraction of what the foster care stipend is. My kids? needs aren?t changing any as we finalize their adoptions, but the amount of help we?ll get to care for those needs will cut down to less than half.

Subsidy also includes help with medical. THANKFULLY.? Seriously, a lot of these kids have additional medical issues as well as ongoing mental health concerns.? They deserve as much help as possible.? Having secondary medical coverage will help CONSIDERABLY in getting them the services that they need!

It isn?t all-inclusive though! For example, medicaid will pay for speech therapy for a child as long as they are under the 13th percentile (btw, in public school here, it is the 7th percentile).? A child?s speech has to be pretty rough to be so low!? For example, one of my children?s speech is at the 11th percentile.? He is 40% intelligible by strangers and 60% by people who know him.? Our agency worker speaks to him about 3 times per month and ?can usually get the gist of what he?s saying? (her words).? Okay, so medicaid will pick up the difference between what our insurance will pay and what it costs to have our speech therapist out here until he gets over 13 percent.? Well, then? We either have to pay the difference (approx. $880 per month) or take him to a speech center where we can pay just a normal 10% co-pay.? Obviously, we?ll have to choose the latter despite the fact that that is very likely not best for him.

Subsidy also includes a number of post-adoption services.? We will get a small amount yearly towards summer camp (this amount changes yearly, but may be $100 or $300).? The children will be able to stay with their same therapist, a therapist who doesn?t take our insurance or the kind of Medicaid the state will give us.? The adoptive therapy/support group that costs $35 per session now will be free. Respite is offered.? Family therapy is offered.? Help finding information and services is offered.? I didn?t know all that was included in the subsidy, but I?m glad it is.

And then there is the Tax Credit.? Boy has this been something discussed a lot the last few years. See, the tax credit is an amount that would offset the amount of tax you were required to pay.? The amount varies yearly, but it is around $12-13K per kid.? Well, in order to get to offset $12,000 of tax liability, a married couple has to have a taxable income (adjusted gross income minus deductions and exemptions) over $79,000.? I don?t even know how to figure how much our income would have to be to take it for three kids in one year.? I don?t need to know as there is no way we?ll ever make that kind of money.? So the tax law allows people to take it over five years.? With seven exemptions plus the standard deduction, we simply will never use one child?s offset, much less three. Our tax liability was under $1000 for 2011. So over five years, we?re talking less than a couple thousand dollars of the $39,000 possible.

It may be worth considering who are the people adopting from foster care?? Are they wealthy people?? Or are they people like us who simply wanted to help children and families (fostering) while possibly building our own families (adopting)?? Are they more likely solidly middle class and working poor or people who are making $200,000 per year? It just seems the tax credit may not really be helping the people who need it the most who are adopting the children who have started out the furthest behind the eight ball.

Anyway, so that is the money side of it.? We aren?t getting rich by adopting from foster care.? We are struggling in lots of ways.? As I was filling out the adoption subsidy paperwork, I could see how poor we really are. That doesn?t make us a bad ?placement.?? It means our love runs deeper than our wallets :) ? I?m glad we?ll get a little help.? It makes it possible for people like us to provide a normal childhood as well as the care these kids need.

Really, money is really a very small consideration.? Yes, I can afford to adopt from foster care while I can?t pay $36,000 for a child.? Yes, I will get a subsidy.? But though those things may encourage people to look this direction, it doesn?t mean it is the reason for doing it.

Cameron: Earth's deepest spot desolate, foreboding

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The last frontier on Earth is out-of-this-world, desolate, foreboding, and moon-like, James Cameron said after diving to the deepest part of the ocean.

And he loved it.

Cameron, who knows a little about alien worlds having made the movie "Avatar," said when he got to this strange cold, dark place 7 miles below the western Pacific Ocean that only two other men have been to, there was one thing he promised to himself: He wanted to drink in how unusual it is.

He didn't do that when he first dove to the watery grave of the Titanic, and Apollo astronauts have said they never had time to savor where they were.

"There had to be a moment where I just stopped, and took it in, and said, 'This is where I am; I'm at the bottom of the ocean, the deepest place on Earth. What does that mean?'" Cameron told reporters during a Monday conference call after spending three hours at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, nearly 7 miles down.

"I just sat there looking out the window, looking at this barren, desolate lunar plain, appreciating," Cameron said.

He also realized how alone he was, with that much water above him.

"It's really the sense of isolation, more than anything, realizing how tiny you are down in this big vast black unknown and unexplored place," Cameron said.

Cameron said he had hoped to see some strange deep sea monster like a creature that would excite the storyteller in him and seem like out of his movies, but he didn't.

He didn't see tracks of animals on the sea floor as he did when he dove more than 5 miles deep weeks ago. All he saw were voracious shrimp-like critters that weren't bigger than an inch.

But that was OK, he said, it was all about exploration, science and discovery. He is the only person to dive there solo, using a sub he helped design. He is the first person to reach that depth ? 35,576 feet ? since it was initially explored in 1960.

He spent more than three hours at the bottom, longer than the 20 minutes Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard spent in the only other visit 52 years ago. But it was less than the six hours he had hoped. He said he would return.

"I see this as the beginning," Cameron said. "It's not a one-time deal and then moving on. This is the beginning of opening up this new frontier."

"To me, the story is in the people in their quest and curiosity and their attempt to understand," Cameron said.

He spent time filming the Mariana Trench, which is about 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam. The trip down to the deepest point took two hours and 36 minutes, starting Sunday afternoon U.S. East Coast time.

His return aboard his 12-ton, lime-green sub called Deepsea Challenger was a "faster-than-expected 70-minute ascent," according to National Geographic, which sponsored the expedition. Cameron is a National Geographic explorer-in-residence.

The only thing that went wrong was the hydraulics on the system to collect rocks and critters to bring them back to land. Just as he was about to collect his first sample, a leak in the hydraulic fluid sprayed into the water and he couldn't bring anything back.

When Cameron climbed into his sub, it was warm because it was near the equator and his cramped vehicle ? his head hit one end and his feet the other ? was toasty because of the heat given off by electronics. It felt "like a sauna" with temperatures of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, he said.

But as he plunged into the deep, the temperature outside the sub dropped to around 36 degrees, he said.

The pressure on the sub was immense ? comparable to three SUVs resting on a toe. The super-strong sub shrank three inches under that pressure, Cameron said.

"It's a very weird environment," Cameron said. "I can't say it's very comfortable. And you can't stretch out."

Justin Bieber Takes A 'Leap' With 'Boyfriend'

'He's an incredible, incredible writer and amazing vocalist,' producer Mike Posner tells MTV News about Bieber's new single.

Justin Bieber dropped his bumping new single "Boyfriend" on Monday (March 26), teasing his next album, Believe. It's a grinding, midtempo song that hears Bieber proclaiming all the ways he can make a girl happy (swag and fondue included!).

Co-produced and co-written by "Cooler Than Me" singer Mike Posner, the song shows growth from Bieber's "Baby" days. When MTV News caught up with Posner last week, he told us what it was like to hit the studio with Bieber (and co-producer and co-writer Mason Levy) for the track.

"I've known [Bieber's manager] Scooter [Braun] for a few years, so I actually ran into Scooter at a Clippers game and told him I would love to work with Justin," Posner said. "I got the opportunity to write with Justin. I didn't really know what to expect at first, but he's an incredible, incredible writer and amazing vocalist.

"Because I'm an artist myself, I can be pretty selective on who I produce for and who I make beats for ... and really what I'm looking for is an amazing vocalist, somebody that can sing better than I can," he continued. "And the other thing is somebody that's willing to not try to make something that succeeds within the matrix of what pop music is now, but makes something that moves that matrix to where it is, and Justin was willing to take that leap with me."

Bieber spoke to Ryan Seacrest on his radio show hours after the song's world premiere Monday, explaining why this was the perfect track to kick off the Believe era.

"It was a really hard choice. I mean, we had so many songs, so many uptempos we could release, [that] I thought, 'Let's slow it down,' " he said, adding that there are already plenty of fast songs all over the radio. "It's just something a little bit more mature, but it's also something I think I'm ready for."

While fans and industry insiders had been wondering what a more grown-up Bieber would sound like, he said he tried to block out all the noise when making the track. "There's so many people that are going to give me opinions, but I'm the only one who can ultimately make those decisions, because I'm going to have to live with my career for the rest of my life. So I thought this was the perfect single," he said, adding that this song "was me all the way; it is a representation of me."

And Bieber said "Boyfriend" perfectly sets up what's coming next. "It's kind of classic," he said of the album. "The songs, I feel, won't get old. The music is very fresh, but it's also — I'm taking a lot from old-school music, a lot of Michael Jackson, a lot of old R&B, a lot of old pop. It's pretty special."

FRED charts have exploded all over the financial blogosphere.? The site is easy to use and addictive if you're a data hound or a market nerd.

This is great - I was out with Joe Weisenthal the other night after he spoke with the St Louis Fed people by phone, he was blown away at the output of such a small group of people when it comes to the FRED charting section.? I guess this is an example of a quasi-government thingie actually exceeding our expectations in terms of productivity.

Runaway planets zoom at a fraction of light speed

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? Seven years ago, astronomers boggled when they found the first runaway star flying out of our galaxy at a speed of 1.5 million miles per hour. The discovery intrigued theorists, who wondered: If a star can get tossed outward at such an extreme velocity, could the same thing happen to planets?

New research shows that the answer is yes. Not only do runaway planets exist, but some of them zoom through space at a few percent of the speed of light -- up to 30 million miles per hour.

"These warp-speed planets would be some of the fastest objects in our galaxy. If you lived on one of them, you'd be in for a wild ride from the center of the galaxy to the Universe at large," said astrophysicist Avi Loeb of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

"Other than subatomic particles, I don't know of anything leaving our galaxy as fast as these runaway planets," added lead author Idan Ginsburg of Dartmouth College.

Such speedy worlds, called hypervelocity planets, are produced in the same way as hypervelocity stars. A double-star system wanders too close to the supermassive black hole at the galactic center. Strong gravitational forces rip the stars from each other, sending one away at high speed while the other is captured into orbit around the black hole.

For this study, the researchers simulated what would happen if each star had a planet or two orbiting nearby. They found that the star ejected outward could carry its planets along for the ride. The second star, as it's captured by the black hole, could have its planets torn away and flung into the icy blackness of interstellar space at tremendous speeds.

A typical hypervelocity planet would slingshot outward at 7 to 10 million miles per hour. However, a small fraction of them could gain much higher speeds under ideal conditions.

Current instruments can't detect a lone hypervelocity planet since they are dim, distant, and very rare. However, astronomers could spot a planet orbiting a hypervelocity star by watching for the star to dim slightly when the planet crosses its face in a transit.

For a hypervelocity star to carry a planet with it, that planet would have to be in a tight orbit. Therefore, the chances of seeing a transit would be relatively high, around 50 percent.

"With one-in-two odds of seeing a transit, if a hypervelocity star had a planet, it makes a lot of sense to watch for them," said Ginsburg.

Eventually, such worlds will escape the Milky Way and travel through the intergalactic void.

"Travel agencies advertising journeys on hypervelocity planets might appeal to particularly adventurous individuals," added Loeb.

The research will be published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, in a paper authored by Idan Ginsburg, Avi Loeb, and Gary Wegner (Dartmouth College).
