Landscape Architects Design Parks for Pets | Planetizen

With seventy-nine out of every hundred households containing pets, more emphasis has been placed in recent years on designing open-space for our best friends in the animal world. "The growing urban population is embracing dog runs as an important component to the recreational quality of a park," says Metropolis Mag's Lisa DuRussel. "In addition to giving their pets a place to romp, city parks also bring dog owners together."

"Most dog parks evolve around a simple idea: find an open space, fence it in, let dogs run." Despite that simplicity, some jurisdictions are going above and beyond, specifically designing places for the enjoyment of the animals. "Drawing on design inspiration from our four-legged friends, the team felt it was important to design through the primary user?s eyes," states DuRussel. This includes designing pavement colors and textures compatible to the limited color perception of our canine friends, while reducing pavement temperature and abrasiveness.

Some successful elements that have been integrated into parks include "dog-activated water features, themed drinking fountains, and boulders of various sizes for play."

PlayStation 4 Video Game Console

Lots of the folks are eying the release of PlayStation 4 new console and Xbox 720 sometime around end of next year (or perhaps surely before that), although seemingly Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein has got various viewpoint about this.

Mark revealed that the capabilities of the latest variation of X-Box 360 and PS3 are beyond the standard gaming consoles. They?re HD equipped and today too many people are prepared to enter in the HD era yet.

Not surprisingly, you will find those irregular gaming freaks, that are not worried to spend anything to obtain their hands on one of the best in the gaming arena, and not everybody can give to try and do the same. In fact, majority of the players who?ve contested Gears of War 2 haven?t been qualified to take pleasure in in really in the HDTVs.

Consequently, this basically means that the PS3 and X-Box 360 still now have tons of excitement under their hood and also the players are not yet ready to enter the HD era and take advantage of the other resources, that can cost a savings now.

Evidently, Microsoft has additionally specified an update last week saying that the project Natal will be the upcoming popular trend on their agenda and Mark feels that?s the name of the next generation X-Box gaming console. On the other hand, he firmly feels that neither the PS4 nor project Natal will be on offer definitely for future 4-5 years.

Additionally, Mark validated that the growth of PS4 expected specs and next gen X-Box (whatever MS calls it) will set you back considerably to the company and will also be very hard on their behalf to really make it through with the deep growth cost of the next gen gaming consoles whilst still being advertising them at a minimal value.

In addition, Wii, X-Box 360 and also PS3 are able for many more firmware improvements, which can enhance their media centric capabilities to an awesome degree. For that reason, it makes sense to capitalize on the existing capabilities of such gaming systems to the fullest and then consider the roll-out of their next generation.

Depending on Mark?s opinion, PS4 might be 7-8years away from launch, despite the fact that PS3 is not doing too good in the market. Apparently, Sony is certain enough to improvise on PS3 and top the gaming industry once again. And so, for the present time, let us wait around and watch the show.

'AGT' semifinals: Andrew De Leon wows crowd

By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

With 24 acts going into the semifinals, it's no surprise that "America's Got Talent" is splitting the performances into two episodes. Regardless, we got to kick-off the beginning of the end on Tuesday night, so let's get straight into who performed and will be facing eliminations tomorrow.

Which four wildcards made it to the semifinals?

The show started off strong with an impeccable performance of "Ave Maria" by Andrew De Leon, which earned him a standing ovation from the crowd, but still got some flack from the judges. Howie Mandel brought up the fact that De Leon doesn't have any formal training and Sharon Osbourne said he needs to lose the gothic look if he wants to be taken seriously. Geez!

Todd Oliver and his "talking dog" were next. Oliver tried a different tactic by setting up his act as a late-night talk show and his pup was the guest. Cute idea. Regardless of what people may think of this act, the judges absolutely love it. "You are a headline act. Your material was spot on for this audience. You had them in the palm of your hand," Howard Stern said.

The crowd seemed to love watching Donovan and Rebecca, a very good-looking and strong married couple, show off their acrobatic strength and skill. But then again, it may have been their barely-there costumes.

Andrew De Leon gets a second chance!

A 14-year-old Edon Pinchot got the attention of all the young girls in the crowd when he sang One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful." The person he didn't impress? Stern, who was "a little bit bored by that song." Hey, take that up with the writers.

The Scott Brothers did a dance routine that didn't seem to resonate with anybody once it was done. Sorry. Nothing too memorable here.

Freaky alert! Eric Dittelman, known as just "Dittelman," is a mind reader. No, seriously. He told Stern to color-in a sketch of his face on an easel and Dittelman produced a drawing that was almost identical to what Stern did! Howard said, "He deserves to go through."

Remember these OMG moments from America's Next Top Model?

Another standing ovation was given to contortionist and street dancer Turf, who included more dancing into tonight's routine. Stern, who has shown Turf love from the start, told the contestant, "I'm pulling for you."

Unfortunately, the beautiful voice of Bria Kelly wasn't enough for the judges. After performing Pink's "Perfect," the judges told her that she lacked emotion and needs stronger stage presence.

Joe Castillo was entertaining with his sand art creations. Especially when he was able to morph his art from one bird into two hands clasping and ultimately into two faces--one of them being Jesus. Kudos, sir.

Poor Kelly Osbourne got hurt on the AGT set

"The largest stringed instrument in the world" graced the AGT stage tonight when William Close played his giant Earth Harp. The judges absolutely loved it.

After Mandel picked a topic, Tom Cotter did what he does best--tell jokes. But the best part was they were actually funny! He cracked about "the best 28 semesters" of his life.

Last to perform was the theatrical hip-hop group Academy of Villains, who were great to close the show with all their lasers, smoke and red balloons. And although Sharon thought it was "incredible," Stern had to come in and say, "I got a little bit bored through it and was wishing it would be over."

HBT: Dickey wins 16th, stays in Cy Young race

R.A. Dickey is still very much alive in the conversation for the National League Cy Young award. The knuckleballer tossed seven innings of one-run ball this afternoon at Citi Field as part of a 3-1 win over the Astros. The strong performance helped the Mets snap a six-game losing streak.

Dickey actually got the Mets on the board first in the bottom of the the fourth inning when he hit a tapper along the first base line which caused Astros starter Fernando Abad and catcher Jason Castro to collide and Ronny Cedeno to scamper home from third. Yes, it was an as ugly as it sounds. Watch the play here. Justin Turner later added a solo homer in the sixth while Jason Bay had an RBI single in the eighth. This was the first time since last Friday that the Mets scored more than two runs in a game.

Dickey allowed just five hits while striking out two and walking one. The only run scored on a wild pitch in his final inning of work. It was a little curious to see him leave the game after throwing just 86 pitches, but Jon Rauch, Josh Edgin and Frank Francisco were able to hang on. Dickey is now tied with fellow Cy Young candidates Johnny Cueto and Gio Gonzalez for the National League lead with 16 wins and ranks fourth with a 2.76 ERA. He?s also tied with Stephen Strasburg for the National League lead with 183 strikeouts.

TORONTO?-?

Olivia Chow says she won?t run for Mayor of Toronto.

Despite polls showing she could beat Mayor Rob Ford and rampant speculation she might run, Chow, the widow of NDP leader Jack Layton, says she won?t jump into the 2014 mayoralty race.

?Toronto is a beautiful place, Jack loved the city, loved the citizens and I?m so glad (Councillor Mike Layton) is now working here at City Hall and doing a fine job,? Chow said just before the memorial for Layton in Nathan Phillips Square.

Asked directly if she wants to run for mayor, Chow gave a blunt ?no.?

?Thank you for asking though,? she said. ?I thought it was just summer idle discussion.?

A Forum Research poll conducted at the end of June found Chow would beat Ford in a two-way race. Around 58% of the 1,212 Toronto residents polled said they would vote for Chow for mayor, while only 34% said they would vote for Ford. Just 8% said they were undecided.

The Toronto NDP MP said she?s committed to working on a national public transit strategy that will be up for a vote this fall.

?You know what would be a great impact (for Toronto) is (Prime Minister) Stephen Harper bring some of that money that we give to the federal government through the form of taxes of all kind, bring some of that money back so we can fix the Gardiner (Expy.) ... and we can finally have some finding for public transit because it is desperately needed,? she said.

Cows really can't predict rain

How can you accurately predict if it?s going to rain? Just check a cow pasture. If all the cows are lying down, a rainstorm is coming ? or so this old wives? tale claims.

Believers have schemed up several different explanations for why our bovine friends would hit the ground in anticipation of a storm, and many of them sound equally plausible. The simplest is that cows can sense increasing air moisture and will plop down to preserve a dry patch of grass. Another theory states that cows lie down to ease their stomachs, which are supposedly sensitive to changes in atmospheric pressure brought on by rainfall.

The most complicated explanation suggests that cow legs are micro-porous structures that rapidly absorb moisture. As the relative humidity builds from an oncoming downpour, the cow?s legs will absorb more and more moisture from the air, softening until they can no longer support the weight of the cow.

But is there any weight behind this tale? Not likely ? cows lie down for many reasons, and there?s no scientific evidence that rain is one of them. As the Farmer?s Almanac says, ?Cows lying down in a field more often means they?re chewing their cud, rather than preparing for raindrops.? And just think: If weather predictions were made based on the actions of cows, the forecast would always be grim.

Scientists examine effects of manufactured nanoparticles on soybean crops

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Sunscreens, lotions, and cosmetics contain tiny metal nanoparticles that wash down the drain at the end of the day, or are discharged after manufacturing. Those nanoparticles eventually end up in agricultural soil, which is a cause for concern, according to a group of environmental scientists that recently carried out the first major study of soybeans grown in soil contaminated by two manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs).

The team was led by scientists at UC Santa Barbara's Bren School of Environmental Science & Management. The team is also affiliated with the UC Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEIN), a $24 million collaboration based at UCLA, with researchers from UCSB, UC Davis, UC Riverside, University of Texas at El Paso, Columbia University, and other national and international partners.

The results of the study are published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Our society has become more environmentally aware in the last few decades, and that results in our government and scientists asking questions about the safety of new types of chemical ingredients," said senior author Patricia Holden, a professor with the Bren School. "That's reflected by this type of research."

She explained that the research, which is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is helping to discover potential environmental implications of a new industry that includes nanomaterials. The ultimate goal is to help find more environmentally compatible substitutes, Holden said.

Soybean was chosen for the study due to its importance as a food crop -- it is the fifth largest crop in global agricultural production and second in the U.S. -- and because it is vulnerable to MNMs. The findings showed that crop yield and quality are affected by the addition of MNMs to the soil.

The scientists studied the effects of two common nanoparticles, zinc oxide and cerium oxide, on soybeans grown in soil in greenhouses. Zinc oxide is used in cosmetics, lotions, and sunscreens. Cerium oxide is used as an ingredient in catalytic converters to minimize carbon monoxide production, and in fuel to increase fuel combustion. Cerium can enter soil through the atmosphere when fuel additives are released with diesel fuel combustion.

The zinc oxide nanoparticles may dissolve, or they may remain as a particle, or re-form as a particle, as they are processed through wastewater treatment. At the final stage of wastewater treatment there is a solid material, called biosolids, which is applied to soils in many parts of the U.S. This solid material fertilizes the soil, returning nitrogen and phosphorus that are captured during wastewater treatment. This is also a point at which zinc oxide and cerium oxide can enter the soil.

The scientists noted that the EPA requires pretreatment programs to limit direct industrial metal discharge into publicly owned wastewater treatment plants. However, the research team conveyed that "MNMs -- while measurable in the wastewater treatment plant systems -- are neither monitored nor regulated, have a high affinity for activated sludge bacteria, and thus concentrate in biosolids."

The authors pointed out that soybean crops are farmed with equipment powered by fossil fuels, and thus MNMs can also be deposited into the soil through exhaust.

The study showed that soybean plants grown in soil that contained zinc oxide bioaccumulated zinc; they absorbed it into the stems, leaves, and beans. Food quality was affected, although it may not be harmful to humans to eat the soybeans if the zinc is in the form of ions or salts, in the plants, according to Holden.

In the case of cerium oxide, the nanoparticles did not bioaccumulate, but plant growth was stunted. Changes occurred in the root nodules, where symbiotic bacteria normally accumulate and convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonium, which fertilizes the plant. The changes in the root nodules indicate that greater use of synthetic fertilizers might be necessary with the buildup of MNMs in the soil.

Holden commented on the likelihood of high concentrations of these nanoparticles in agriculture: "There could be hotspots, places where you have accumulation, including near manufacturing sites where the materials are being made, or if there are spills. We have very limited information about the quantity or state of these synthetic nanomaterials in the environment right now. We know they're being used in consumer goods, and we know they're going down the drain."

First author John H. Priester is a staff scientist in the Holden lab at UCSB. Other co-authors from UC CEIN are Yuan Ge, Randall E. Mielke, Allison M. Horst, Shelly Cole Moritz, Roger M. Nisbet, Joshua P. Schimel, Jose A. Hernandez-Viezcas, Lijuan Zhao, and Jorge L. Gardea-Torresdey. Co-authors Katherine Espinosa and Reid G. Palmer are affiliated with Iowa State University; Jeff Gelb is affiliated with Xradia Corporation; and Sharon L. Walker is with UC Riverside. NASA/JPL-Caltech, the USDA, and The University of Texas at El Paso were substantially involved in the research.

Making Money Within The Stock Exchange: What You Must ...

Do you want big returns but can never achieve them? Everyone wants to see high yields on their portfolios, but not everyone takes the time to learn the strategies for realizing these profits. Read this article to learn all you can to boost your earnings. To educate yourself regarding trading stocks and shares make sure to go to Porter Stansberry pertaining to excellent information and facts.

Hire a stock broker. These professionals will help guide you so that you can avoid making poor investment choices while teaching you about wise investing. Stockbrokers also have access to expert information on stocks, mutual funds, and bonds. You can harness this expertise for yourself if you hire one. They can also assist with the management of your portfolio, to help you stay on track toward reaching your goals.

You should keep an open mind about the prices of stocks. It is impossible to ignore this absolute rule: the more money you pay for an asset as it relates to its earnings, the lower you can expect the return to be. A stock that appears to be a bad buy for $50 one day, may drop to $30 the next week and become a good buy.

Consider the value of a stock, rather than its price. Is it a stock that will need a long-term investment? If the price appears to be lower than you would expect, do your homework prior to purchase, to make sure that it?s actually a worthwhile investment. Never purchase a stock simply because it has a low price.

If you would like to try your hand at picking your own stocks but also want to use a professional broker as a ?safety net,? look for brokers that can provide both traditional and online services. This way you have the best of both worlds, you get to make your own picks while taking advantage of the professional advice your broker offers. Using this method, you have a certain amount of control, but also professional assistance when you need it.

Make sure you are following the dividends of businesses in which you own stock. This is particularly true for older individuals who need stable returns and substantial dividend payments. Companies with large profits usually will reinvest their money back into their business or they will pay money out to their shareholders through dividends. The yield of a dividend is easy to understand: The annual dividend figure is simply divided by the current stock price.

Be sure you invest over an array of different stocks. The money you invest, like the proverbial eggs, should not all go into the same basket. If you decided to put all of your money into one specific investment and the company fails, then you have just lost your entire investment and your loss is total.

People looking for a stable portfolio tend to stick with established industries and shy away from new industries. In general, this is a good strategy, but it is important not to lose sight of emerging industries and technologies. A well-rounded portfolio should include a couple of stocks for companies in emerging markets.

Anybody has the ability to invest within the stock market, but only some have the knowledge and desire to research in order to earn the highest profit. Concentrate on acquiring as much knowledge as possible about how the market operates, and what companies are good to invest in so you don?t end up losing a lot of money. Remember the tips in this article, so that you can invest today!

French youths jostle minister visiting riot scene

AMIENS, France (Reuters) - Youths jeered and jostled France's interior minister on Tuesday in the northern city of Amiens when he promised to restore law and order at the scene of overnight riots in which police were fired at with buckshot and pelted with missiles.

President Francois Hollande said the state would "mobilize all its resources to combat this violence", which has shaken depressed quarters of major French cities at regular intervals over the past decade.

Police and emergency officials in Amiens were on high alert on Tuesday evening and some, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they feared a further flareup of violence.

Unrest is often blamed on a combination of poor job prospects, racial discrimination, a widespread sense of alienation from mainstream society and perceived hostile policing.

A crowd of about 100 young men met Interior Minister Manuel Valls when he arrived in Amiens to discuss two nights of violence apparently sparked by tension over spot police checks on residents.

"Calm down! Calm down!" Valls yelled as the crowd jostled him while he entered the town hall surrounded by bodyguards.

Valls said 17 police officers were hurt in the rioting, some hit by shotgun pellets, others by a hail of objects thrown by around 100 youths gathered in the city's northern districts.

"Firearms! Can it be considered normal that people turn firearms on police? It's unacceptable ... law and order must be restored," Valls told a news conference, adding that a minority of people were terrorizing the local community.

One officer was in serious condition, the city's Socialist Mayor Gilles Demailly told Reuters.

Hollande, who ordered Valls to break off their joint visit to southeastern France and travel to Amiens, said too little money had been put into security in recent years.

"Our priority is security which means that the next budget will include additional resources for the gendarmerie and the police," he said.

The unrest was the first major law and order test for Hollande's Socialists since his May election victory over conservative incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy, whose tough policies on crime and immigration some critics said fanned urban unrest.

Ahmed, a 27-year-old jobless man who refused to give his family name, revealed the sense of anger some locals felt.

"Yesterday our little brothers did a good job," he said. "Imagine if we got involved, then it would get serious. It's a shame nobody got killed yesterday."

"NO-GO" AREA

The interior ministry sent reinforcements to Amiens, part of which was already classified as a "priority security zone" in need of extra policing. The policy formed part of the Socialists' election campaign pledge on law and order.

Riot police and gendarmes sat in two dozen vans parked in the northern neighborhood where a recent face-lift included the building of a gymnasium, swimming pool and cultural center.

One resident, a taxi driver who gave his first name as Jonathan, called the perpetrators "a bunch of idiots."

"It's a game for them and will happen again. It's just to cause trouble, because they are hurting their own people," he said, blaming the riot on weak policing in recent years.

"It was a 'no man's land' and now they want to put in a big police presence. That will only provoke them," he said.

The immediate cause of the two days of disturbances appeared to have been a police spot check on Sunday on a person on the sidelines of a funeral of a young man killed in a road accident.

During a night of violence, rioters set fire to a number of vehicles, in some cases hauling the drivers out of their cars before burning them, mayor Demailly said.

A nursery school was among the buildings gutted in the riot, and a handful of burnt-out cars littered the streets late into Tuesday, though the area was otherwise calm. No one has been arrested so far.

Valls, a law and order hardliner who annoys some fellow Socialists, said there had been other cases this month of "urban guerrilla" behavior.

Mayor of a racially mixed suburb before being appointed to Hollande's government, Valls was a spokesman a decade ago for Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, whose 2002 presidential election defeat was put down partly to his image as soft on law and order.

France has been rocked by bouts of rioting on a number of occasions in the past decade.

Weeks of rioting in 2005, the worst urban unrest in France in 40 years, led to the imposition of a state of emergency by the then centre-right government in which Hollande's predecessor Sarkozy was interior minister.

Incidents involving police were the triggers for disturbances in 2007 and 2010.

The repeated bouts of violence have provoked agonized debate over the grim housing estates that ring many French cities and the integration of millions of poor whites, blacks and North African immigrants into mainstream society.

More Arrests Predicted In Serbia's Agrobanka Case :: Balkan Insight

?We do not want to speak about names or announce who will be arrested but I can assure you that the prosecution will investigate each and every person involved in approving illegal loans between 2006 and 2010,? the prosecutor for organized crime, Mirko Radisavcevic, said.

Serbia's Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime launched an investigation on August 8 when several officials of Agrobanka and two private companies suspected of wrongdoing were arrested in a joint action of the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor's Office.

"So far the investigation has shown that Agrobanka granted a large number of loans to mutually networked legal entities, and without appropriate guarantees, which is contrary to the Law on Banks, the regulations of the National Bank of Serbia and the bank's own acts," a statement from the Prosecutor?s Office said.

"Because of that, the bank was unable to collect loan repayments exceeding 200 million euro," Radisavljevic explained.

According to the Belgrade daily newspaper Press, the former chief of the National Bank, Dejan Soskic, may also be investigated in the case, since the National Bank "ignored a police request" submitted one year ago, asking to see a report on the controls of Agrobanka's business.

Although Soskic recently said that he never received any police requests related to Agrobanka - "former members of the National Bank Council are saying that only Soskic and his vice-governor in charge of control of banks, Mira Eric, could have known about it", the daily newspaper said.

The new National Bank Governor, Jorgovaka Tabakovic, said in a statement that she would "investigate whether the central bank refused to submit the report to the police while Dejan Soskic was at its helm".

?The authorities will determine whether there were oversights at the central bank,? she noted.

Miroslav Prokopijevic, a Belgrade economist, however, believes that the former bank governor is not a crucial person in the investigation, but that the overall responsibility of the central bank should be determined.

?Soskic is being targeted by the media since he doesn?t have a protection of any of the political parties, since he is not a member of them. It is much harder to question some former ministers who are responsible and who come from the [former ruling] Democratic Party,? Prokopijevic said.

?Someone has to be responsible, since small fish could not get loans of a dozens of milions of euro and not having a strong political background,? he added.

In May, the National Bank revoked Agrobanka's license when it was discovered the bank was 300 million euro in the red.

The bank's obligations and deposits were taken over by Nova Agrobanka, founded by the government of Serbia.

The new government has pledged to get to the bottom of the Agrobanka affair.

Carousel Sales Blog: The perils of public speaking (and how to ...

Occasionally, I've been required to speak in front of large groups for my job. This is in no way a favorite thing of mine to do. However, I have gotten really good at giving these types of presentations. I wanted to share what I have learned about speaking in public, and how to get past obstacles that may be holding you back in this area.

Fact:?75% of people have some kind of anxiety when it comes to speaking in public.

Don't let it become a phobia

For some reason, avoidance is a common way of handling the public speaking experience for a lot of people. The reason why they do this is because they are scared. And the truth is that fear can be mastered, if you face it. And only if you face it. If you avoid what makes you fearful, you become more fearful. If you face the fear, you realize it was silly to be scared of something so harmless. That facing fears is something required to be successful. And that it takes courage to succeed.

Don't avoid the inevitable

There comes a time in everyone's life when they have to face the music. Everyone will have to speak publicly at some point in their lives. That being said, that is not the time to speak for the first time in ten years. If you've been practicing getting up in front of an audience, that time when you have to get up will be much easier. Because you've forced yourself to get up before that, and it wasn't so bad. You know you can handle it.

Public speaking is the one skill that elevates the more successful individuals, and sets them apart. Not everyone is willing to do it, and the ones who speak regularly are seen as leaders. Public speaking is a vital element of leadership. It opens up a lot of doors (and windows) of opportunity. It would be sad to miss out on a great opportunity, only because of an unwillingness to speak in front of an audience. That is not a good enough reason to miss out on great possibilities in life.

Know where to look

One of the biggest morale busters while public speaking is looking at too many people. I know that might sound weird, but it's true. This is a recipe for loosing your cool quickly. You have to know where to look, and who to look at. And in which way. Don't look for a response from everyone. You are mainly there to talk about your point, not to catch facial expressions of people watching you. This could make you become paranoid, and forget what to say. It could throw you off, especially if you catch someone doing something negative, like rolling their eyes or doing something disrespectful.

Limit your focus on what you're saying, and look at the important people in the room. If your boss is there, look at him or her. Seek out people who are responding positively to what you're saying. Audio will be your cue where to look. Look where you hear a positive response to your message. Not everywhere. It will help you stay focused on what's important. Your message. And connecting with the people who are really there to hear it.

Know your topic

I've found that speaking in public gets much easier if I have an outline in my mind of what I'm going to talk about. If I really know my subject. This is where preparation comes in. There is simply no way to get around this. If you know what you're going to talk about, you will be much less nervous. You will feel more confident and strong. And realize that this is something you can do more often.

Don't get overly confident

This is where so many people fail. They have given successful presentations in the past, and now they think they can just show up. That they don't have to prepare. This is a sure recipe for disaster! You ALWAYS have to prepare. Always! Always! There is no way around it. Spend time thinking about, and writing out what what you want to talk about. Go over it many times. Rehearse. Anticipate questions from your audience. And when you think you're done preparing, make sure to go over everything again. And maybe even once more. You can never be too prepared. And you should never think you don't have to. You always do.

Just do it

One of the worst enemies of great public speaking is hesitation. When faced with a choice, the easy way out is not really the easy way. It leaves you with a sense of dissatisfaction and doubt. Actually getting up and speaking is so much easier than avoiding it. And gives you a new sense of belief in yourself. Speak up the next time you have an opportunity to do so. You will find it benefits you in many ways.

Thanks for stopping by...CC

Dropping Your Speech | 2leep.in - Free Article writing and publishing

Earlier this weekend I dropped my voice. I was not ill. Somewhat, I experienced ?severe voice strain? from yelling rather loudly and in a panic-stricken way at our two large dogs, who have been having a violent battle over a tennis ball.At first I was just yelling to try to get their attention and make sure they are stop trying to tear each other?s throats out. But when I noticed blood, my shouting turned louder, more hysterical, and high pitched as I created a fresh bout of MTV?s ?Celebrity Death Match? between my two beloved pets.My husband ultimately heard my cries of distress and, being the TRUE leader dog in this household, got between the dogs and broke up the fight. But the damage was done. Evidently, retaining that volume of shrieking for more than 15 seconds may harm one?s vocal cords. Who knew? For those of you who know me well, this was a tragic event. It had been related in catastrophicity to a concert pianist breaking every one of her hands, or even a professional golfer ruining his preferred plaid pants. My voice is my device. I am a talker by profession, and seldom an instant goes by when I don?t exercise my gift. I even talk within my sleep! Therefore getting out of bed on Saturday morning with completely NO VOICE was no small matter. It was HUGE!Yes, yes, for my man my voice was an advantage, for which he still has not ended thanking God (even while my voice starts to return). And yes, of course, the unique opportunity afforded me a distinctive chance to practice the very overrated ?art of listening.?All of this does work. However for probably the most part, it absolutely was just a huge pain in the arse. However, I decided to make the most effective of things, as I am wont to do, and along the way I discovered a few significant lessons. For instance, on a strange but pointless note, when people find out that you can?t speak, they tend to SHOUT at you. And you, unable to talk, are thus rendered unable to tell them that you?re not deaf, or could you ask them to turn down the amount a little. Exciting trend, and very frustrating. All you can perform is laugh and keep your fingers in your ears. And if you attempt to whisper something to somebody out of dire need (which I later found out was a no-no ~ whispering plainly stresses the voice more than speaking) then people have an overwhelming need to whisper back to you. It?s contagious. And kind of funny. Try it sometime. One advantage of losing one?s speech and just to be able to speak in a sound is that everyone stops and gives close attention to you, anything I am not used to even at the best of times. Even if I had nothing especially important to state, an important, deep, spiritual dialogue could be delivered by me to an entire halt by mouthing something to someone.ME: xxxxx xxxx xxxxBOB: Shhhhhh! SHE TALKS! She is ATTEMPTING TO SPEAK! WHAT WAS THAT? TRY AGAIN!ME: I like bacon. Most importantly (and painfully) I discovered that while people would never freely ridicule a pointless, deaf or blind person, temporary mutes are plainly good game. In other words, it is politically correct to mock and ridicule an individual who has lost the capability to speak.I was again and again and sniggeringly requested to ?speak up? by friends and colleagues who were well conscious of my predicament, and screamed at by the teenaged drive-through worker at a local take out establishment.Okay, I will provide you with that one. What was I doing in an Easy Food Drive-Thru? Effectively, believe it or not, before I remembered that I couldn?t talk, I got myself boxed in by other vehicles in front of the buying container (one car behind me, a line in front of me ).BOX: MAY I?ve YOUR ORDER PLEASE?ME: I will have a with a, no xxxx, and a, hold the xxxx.BOX: WHAT????ME: I will have a with a, no xxxx, and a, hold I CAN?T HEAR YOU! CAN YOU PLEASE SPEAK UP!?ME: I lost my xxxxx and I will not xxxxx. I?m therefore xxxxx.BOX:Much to my distress, a year old with acne and a paper cap arrived of the back door of the spot to see what the problem was. Right now the point facing me is all but gone, and the people behind me are manifest and looking me dead, but it?s too late for me to put away.KID: Ma?am is there a problem?ME: YES! I lost my xxxxx and can not xxxxx xxxxx for you xx hear xx.KID: What???ME: I ? lost ? my ? voice ? and ? can?t ? speak ? any ? louder.KID: YOU LOST YOUR VOICE?ME:KID: AND SOMETHING IS WRONG TOGETHER WITH YOUR NOSE??ME: I ? lost ? my ? voice?.KID: YOU LOST YOUR VOICE AND YOU?RE ATTEMPTING TO ORDER FOOD IN A DRIVE THRU. ME:KID: OKAY, MA?AM, CAN YOU PLEASE PULL OVER TO THE SIDE AND LET THESE OTHER, SPEAKING PEOPLE, CONTINUE ON THROUGH THE LINE AND WE?LL TAKE CARE OF YOU OVER THERE.I can?t speak, and he is already pointing the massive traffic jam behind me like he is obtaining flights on the deck of an carrier ~ so I can?t show the little Nazi that I made a blunder, that I got stuck in the point before I remembered I could not discuss. I can?t tell him that I?ll just leave and consume a butter and jelly sandwich at home wallowing in my own shame. No, I am caught now, pulling over to the part of the line where the people who?ve the nerve to purchase enough food for a whole team are banned, and where, significantly to my further shame, the director (a year old with acne and a paper cap) walks purposefully over to my car with one of those plastic picture-menus they use with people who can?t read.I dejectedly point at symbol for the burger with cheese, and then make an at a large Coke. The supervisor SHOUTS the order back at me to ensure it, I nod grimly, and then he SHOUTS how much I owe him.He returns a few minutes later with my food, and all but pats me on the top before he walks back to rule his empire of speaking people.

Things You Should Know about Metal Roofing Material - How to ...

Metal roofing material is gathering popularity in residential roofing, instead of only being found in commercial settings. The main reason for this variation is metal roofing material has more options available in texture and kinds, varying from standing seam, that has been so common in commercial settings, to tile as well as shingle roofing material. Metal roofing material is also flexible in the types of roofs that technology-not only on, since technology-not only on any pitch of roof, widely used as pitched or flat roofing material, and is lightweight in comparison to other materials, which makes it much better to help, especially on steep pitched roofs.

Metal roofing material?s charges are a little more expensive but nearer to the sixty to $ 100 per square for asphalt roofing material as opposed to 600 to 1 thousand per square cost for slate roofing material, the actual priciest available on the market. Eventhough it is more expensive than asphalt roofing material, metal roofing material lasts beyond asphalt materials, often being under warrantee for approximately half a century.

Standing seam metal roofing material is regarded as the commonly used, which connects the pieces side-by-side through hidden fasteners so that the entire roof appears like one part of metal with ridges inside. Tile metal roofing material may be of many different earthy colors and textures in accordance with the design of the property, masking itself because more pittle and heavier tile that?s sometimes suited for pitched roofs. Shingle metal roofing material can really be any color and texture too, even masking itself as cedar shake but devoid of the fire hazard and need for fire-retardant treatment.

Metal roofing material can also be manufactured from ?cool metal? which will help to deflect sunlight in hot climates, thus lowering the ac bill for that consumer. In addition, it is almost always made up to twenty-5 percent recycled metals, so it?s more environmentally friendly than many of the other roofing materials. Metal roofing materials are also recyclable, to ensure a panel can be removed from one project and used on another, thus reducing waste and price.

Metal roofing material also can come insulated, so that the two metal sheets are filled up with a liquid foam insulation that expands until it fills all possible space after which hardens then it turns into a solid piece. This gives a uniform insulation across the top of the roof, laptop computer than other types of insulation that is utilized which sometimes leaves air gaps, letting out heat in the winter months.

Outdoor industry attempts to flex political clout

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? The outdoor recreation industry is flexing its economic muscle ? some $640 billion spent annually by Americans on gear, travel and services ? to push for wilderness protection in Utah, threatening to pull a lucrative biannual trade show if the state doesn't change course on environmental issues.

The industry showed its resolve last week by giving Utah's governor an ultimatum: give up on a threat to take over federal land in the state or risk losing the outdoor gear show that draws thousands of visitors and injects more than $40 million yearly into the state economy.

Empty threat or not, the outdoor industry and related services represent a sizeable chunk of Utah's income ? roughly $4 billion a year, or 5 percent of the state's gross product.

And it's not the first time the 4,000-member-strong Outdoor Industry Association has threatened to take its business elsewhere.

In 2003, the group threatened to pull the shows unless then-Gov. Mike Leavitt curbed an effort to seize control of dirt roads across national parks, national monuments and wilderness areas. Leavitt conceded and the shows stayed.

The group has had more cordial relationships with previous governors than with current Gov. Gary Herbert, who is a staunch supporter of mining, oil and gas development, said Tim Chambless, a political science professor at University of Utah.

The outdoor industry's latest threat has set the stage for a showdown of political will.

"There has been an ongoing tension between preservation and development," Chambless said.

Herbert is vowing to help keep the shows in Utah and work through the political differences.

But he complained his position on public lands has been misconstrued, noting the state wouldn't touch Utah's five national parks, several of its national monuments and 33 wilderness areas.

"I think they want to stay here," Herbert said. "And I want them to stay here."

At issue is legislation signed by Herbert in March that demands the federal government relinquish control of public lands in Utah by 2014, which sets up a potential legal battle over millions of acres in the state. The governor has been warned by his own attorneys that the push will likely be found unconstitutional.

Organizers of the Outdoor Retailer show, which wrapped up its summer expo Sunday, say if Herbert doesn't change course, they're looking at moving to Denver or Las Vegas, though none of those locations have the outdoor amenities that Salt Lake City has as the group seeks space to expand.

"We are in discussions with them. It's a piece of business we're certainly interested in," Visit Denver spokesman Richard Grant said.

Las Vegas also is eager to lure the show to town.

"We are always happy to meet with groups that are considering moving their event," said Jeremy Handel, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Regardless of enticements, organizers concede Denver just can't provide enough convention space in one location. Las Vegas has plenty of room, but delegates say it lacks outdoor amenities found in Salt Lake City, like close proximity to several world-renowned ski areas and wilderness.

"I think we're staying or going to Vegas. Denver would be another good option if they expand their convention center ? they're essentially the same size as Salt Lake," said Kenji Haroutunian, the Nielsen Expositions executive in charge of the shows, where manufacturers take orders from retailers around the world. "We need to be making this decision by the end of this year."

The summer and winter trade shows, which have been in Utah since 1996, can make or break some Salt Lake City businesses.

"For me, this is 20 times more business," said Pam O'Mara, who runs a coffee shop near the Salt Palace Convention Center where the events are held. "It's amazing when they're here."

Next door at Caffe Molise, owner Fred Moesinger says the trade shows add 10 percent to its annual revenue.

"It's a big chunk of our year. It would be a huge loss if they decide to go elsewhere," he said.

While Frank Hugelmeyer, the outdoor association's president and CEO, won't say how serious the group is about leaving, he insists Utah is failing to recognize the economic impacts of protecting public lands for recreation.

"They're stuck in the Eisenhower era," Hugelmeyer said.

Herbert and some Republican leaders contend the state can better manage federal lands in Utah, which amount to some 28 million acres or about 50 percent of the state. Opponents, however, say the move is not only unconstitutional but bad public policy. If implemented, they say, it could eliminate important protections for wildlife refuges, forests and other sensitive areas.

While the Utah law exempts national parks, military installations, Native American reservations and congressionally approved wilderness areas, it would lay claim to the 1.9-million-acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which President Bill Clinton designated in 1996. Since then, state officials and residents of the rural area, which is dominated by red rock landscapes, have waged an endless battle with federal authorities over land use.

Outdoor recreation "is such a big business, and they haven't recognized the change," Hugelmeyer said of Utah's land policies. "The governor talks about balance. He's got a clear energy vision ? what's his vision for outdoor recreation? His energy platform is expanding into recreation areas."

Earthquake risk in Europe detailed

ScienceDaily (Aug. 10, 2012) ? For the first time, scientists of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences have succeeded in setting up a harmonized catalogue of earthquakes for Europe and the Mediterranean for the last thousand years. This catalogue consists of about 45000 earthquakes.

How strong can earthquakes in Germany be? Where in Europa are the earthquake activities concentrated? These questions are the basis for risk assessments and become relevant when it comes to the safety of buildings or the generation of tsunami. For the first time, scientists of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences have succeeded in setting up a harmonized catalogue of earthquakes for Europe and the Mediterranean for the last thousand years. This catalogue consists of about 45000 earthquakes, reported in the latest issue of the Journal of Seismology.

Earthquakes occur with different frequencies of occurrence, meaning that in some regions, strong earthquakes happen with time gaps of hundreds of years. Such rare events can cause a false feeling of security which belies the true risk. This is compounded by the fact that instrumental measurements only go back for roughly a century, and reliable data for smaller quakes for about half that long.

Thus, the only way to assess the actual risk is the analysis of historical earthquake accounts. "The catalogue that we present here covers the earthquakes of the last thousand years with magnitudes of Mw 3,5 and larger in the northern part of our research area and magnitudes Mw4,0 for the southern part," explains Dr. Gottfried Gr?nthal of the GFZ. "Our earthquake catalogue stretches over an area from the Azores to the Caspian Sea and from the Sahara to the North Cape." Based on some 80 mostly national earthquake catalogues, more than 100 other sources and own analyses of key historical earthquakes, the EMEC-catalogue (European-Mediterranean Earthquake Catalogue) offers the first reliable, regional, long-time database with a harmonized assessment of earthquake magnitudes.

In bringing together all these sources with their considerable differences in magnitude or intensity scales, particular care was taken to harmonize the latter in the form of moment magnitude Mw. The earthquakes in the EMEC are catalogued from 1000 AD bis 2006. In areas south of 40?N and east of 10?E the available data allow for an analysis starting from 300 AD. Of course these data are not complete, especially in the early phase of the catalogued time period. The point in time after which data for certain magnitudes can be assumed as sufficiently complete is very different within the research area. For example, earthquakes with a magnitude of Mw 6,5 and above in the Levant exist more or less completely since 300 AD, and earthquakes of Mw 5 and above since 1965. In Germany, the catalogue of earthquakes with Mw 5 and greater is sufficiently complete since about 1600.

"Part of the EMEC-publication is also a list of so-called fake-quakes, i.e. quakes that have been reported erroneously due to errors of the chroniclers, errors in dates or other mistakes," explains GFZ scientist Gottfried Gr?nthal. Importance was also attached to a user-friendly web page: "On the GFZ-EMEC-website, data can be downloaded according to the wishes of the users and epicentre maps can be generated, stored and printed in customized scales of time and space and map projections."

T. Berry Brazelton, MD: Speaking Up for Children

I began practicing pediatrics more than 60 years ago. Since then, health care has taken enormous strides, including this summer?s Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act. This landmark ruling comes after decades of progress in how we care for our children in this country.

We know so much more now than back when I started: Science has shown that deprivation in the womb has lifelong negative effects on health. So does severe adversity during early childhood. We know now that access to quality health care ? at the beginning of life and during pregnancy ? can help prevent both. Investing in prevention can help transform our healthcare system by keeping people healthy and reducing health care costs. A healthier workforce and a sustainable healthcare system mean a stronger nation.

But we can and must do more to act on what we know. There?s more to do if we are to ensure that all children grow up to become adults who can cope with adversity, strengthen their communities, engage as active participants in civic life, steward our fragile planet?s limited resources and nurture the next generation to be prepared to do the same.

One place to start is preventive health care, which can do more to strengthen our nation when linked with education. In addition to good health, our workforce needs to be highly educated, and the two go hand in hand. Nearly 50 years ago, I collaborated with?Head Start?s founding fathers, educator Ed Zigler and pediatrician Julius Richmond, to help build a comprehensive child health, early education and family support program for children living in poverty. Since then, science has shown that children are more likely to enter college, be healthier in adulthood, join a globally competitive workforce and serve as contributive members of society if they get a strong education ? starting in their earliest years.

Today, thanks to Obama administration investments, more children than ever are participating in Head Start, fulfilling the bipartisan vision backed by Republican and Democratic administrations alike. Econometric studies have shown that such investments pay off ? up to?$17 per $1 spent. Yet despite all we now know, too many Head Start-eligible children still aren?t funded for a chance to participate in this critical program. One of the Obama administration?s great accomplishments has been to galvanize public will to open Head Start doors to?61,000 additional children, but we need to fund twice as many Head Start slots for babies and young children, and we need to start right now.

The recent Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act leaves many protections for children and families intact, at least for now. Thanks to this law, millions of children have already received preventive well-child routine care; more than 3 million young adults have?received coverage through their parents? health insurance plans?and children with pre-existing conditions, including asthma, diabetes and others, have been guaranteed rather than denied coverage when their parents have had to switch insurance plans due to job changes or out-of-state moves. The broader coverage afforded by this bill will make our nation healthier, and stronger.

But threats to our children?s health are afoot on Capitol Hill. Fall deadlines for funding the federal government loom. Nearly every proposal before Congress would make dramatic cuts to investments in preventive and primary health care for children, investments that pay off and save taxpayers? money. If Congress chooses cuts and avoids sequestration ? the automatic cuts set by the Budget Control Act of last summer ? Medicaid is at risk. If Congress doesn?t, then the automatic ones would also slash federally-funded children?s health programs and educational ones. Either way, without the funding for relatively inexpensive medication and outpatient treatment, we will spend much, much more for children who end up in very costly emergency rooms and intensive care units unnecessarily. We know how to do better ? for our children?s health and our economy, too.

I may be 94 years old, but I?m not done. We health care professionals have a duty to advocate for what we now know children need and to empower their families and federal legislators to do the same. We must go beyond our offices and prescription pads and into the halls of Congress and the pages of publications like this one to speak up for the children we care for who so often are unable to speak for themselves.

T. Berry Brazelton, MD, beloved as ?America?s pediatrician? has advised Republican and Democratic administrations on children?s health. Clinical professor emeritus of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and founder of the Brazelton Touchpoints Center at Boston Children?s Hospital, Brazelton is internationally renowned for his pioneering research on newborns and his common sense wisdom for parents. The Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) is used in major hospitals around the world, and the bestseller,?Touchpoints: Your Child?s Behavioral and Emotional Development, has been translated into more than 20 languages.?

I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by fantababy: 11:22am On Aug 07Dear All,

I am a regular visitor to Nairaland, but I have not been able to post / comment for a long time because I could not remember my password.

I want to vent my depression as I have no one to talk to, would try to make this as short as possible. To start with, my temperament is melancholy. Melancholies struggle with periods of depression & bitter sweet moments. Words count with us and we hurt easily.

I am 9 months pregnant, and combining this current status with my temperament has not been easy. Pregnancy on its own is not an easy journey and it is sad when your hubby does not understand this. I have a fantastic hubby, but these past 9 months have been challenging & more depressing for me because he expects me to be a super woman. I think this is very selfish, mean and cruel.

I am a full time working lady & very hard working, am not boasting about it. All through my pregnancy, I ensured that I did not allow the sickness associated with pregnancy to slow me down. I always cooked & went to the market myself. My hubby goes to work with lunch and eats every night. The very few times when am unable to make his dinner, due to extreme fatigue, my dear hubby wears a long face & prepares only his own food, without asking me if I have eaten. I find that very selfish, but I have bottled it up. Imagine, me curled up in bed, too tired & hungry, and my dear hubby goes into the kitchen, prepares something, and eats alone, without looking at me twice. He makes very annoying statements, like ?am pretending or am I the first pregnant woman!?

All through this pregnancy, I have suffered extreme pelvic pain, waist pain & swellings. My feet size went from size 39 ? 42. I feel pains standing for more than 10 mins, but I bear it all & pretend, least my hubby makes more annoying statement. I can cope with the physical pains, but I cannot combine this with verbal abuse & emotional pain. I get really uncomfortable most times, and simply requests like pls turn off the AC, give me your pillow, pls open the windows are met with negative responses most times or done grudgingly. Even a simple massage request is always done in such haste.

This is my first pregnancy, and right now, I am extremely emotional. My mother is late and I miss her terribly. My family have only supported through phone calls. I feel sad, that my hubby has never volunteered to assist with the groceries or making breakfast / lunch / dinner/ laundry. Etc. I have asked for assistance a couple of times and I get a NO.

Am due in about 2 weeks and I am so anxious & scared. My pelvic pains are so extreme that they keep me awake most nights, most times I cry at night. I can?t turn and walk with so much difficulty. Last Sunday, I had to scream at him, that I want to be pampered. He was saying a lot of hurtful things and I had to plead that he should keep quiet least he says more hurtful things. He says am disrespectful & my attitude is bad. Please, how do I maintain a respectful attitude when I am in so much pain / discomfort and he has not shown any care during the time I need him the most. I try to respect him a lot but I think he has an esteem issue, because every of my actions are counted as disrespect! I walk on egg shell all day.

Am anxious & nervous at the thought of being a mother, the labor pains, sleepless nights after the baby is born are all making me depressed. Even the thought of having my mother in law stay with us is getting me scared. (She is a very nice woman, but the thot still scares me). Right now, I want to curl up in bed, have someone massage my body, feed me breakfast in bed, pray with me, make my nails, stroke my hair and tell me all will be well. But no one to do that. I am tempted to spend the weekend with my father, but he would smell something is wrong, and he lives far away from me.

I have decided that since no one wants to pamper me, I would pamper myself. I would cook when I have the energy, (no point stressing myself for a man that does not appreciate), I would sit by the beach, read a book & let the wind sooth my troubled heart, I would go the cinemas, walk around the malls, eat out & buy lovely things for myself??..

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by nat138: 12:20pm On Aug 07@ OP where are you based. Also please have the phone number of a trusted friend handy, someone you are sure can go all out for you even if they are called at midnight to rush you to the hospital because for all we know this your husband may just ignore you the day you go into labour.
Take care of your self and don't stress, go easy okay.

Cheers

Op sorry oh! Its high time you remind your husband that you didn't impregnate yourself, the only way the man can show support during this difficult time is to spoil you.

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by chaircover: 12:26pm On Aug 07Who wouldn?t be depressed if they had to go through this?? I blame you small sha. How can he go and cook for himself alone why you lie in bed hungry and tired? I am sorry but that plate of food will end up in the bin. Let him go and report me to my pastor and my pastor will tell him that he himself cooks for his wife when she is ill. Sometimes one has to reject certain things the hard way or people think that they can carry on doing these things.

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I suffered from that terrible excruciating pelvic pain you talk about which is caused by the baby sitting on a nerve.

My dear please concentrate on having a smooth labour and healthy baby. Have you heard about PND? Please please please don?t put yourself in a position to go through that; so right now just fashi the man and concentrate on you. You are the number one right now. Have a friend or neighbour on standby just in case you go into labour and your husband is not taking it serious. Do not put your life or the life of your unborn child in any danger.

Later, when you have had your baby and you are much stronger, then go back and revisit your husband?s behaviour and lack of care during your pregnancy. You need to let him know in no uncertain terms that this his behaviour is unacceptable or he will do it again. It?s kuku not his fault . . . something that people are spending millions to look for.

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by mission08(f): 1:34pm On Aug 07This is what happens when a man feels it is not right for him to cook once he is married. Some men feel the woman should be strong at all times to attend to their needs no matter your circumstances, whether pregnant, sick or whatever. The situation is further compounded when a man with such a mind set also has self esteem issues, he would feel belittled and insecure when forced to operate outside his box.

Do take care and don't stress yourself. Give yourself a treat as you have decided. Although it could be so lonely when your spouse is not emotionally connected with you. But all the same, God is your strength.

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by maclatunji: 1:36pm On Aug 07OP, this is one of the most heartbreaking stories I have read here... maybe because you are a good writer. You really have to focus on being strong for a safe delivery. I suspect you are outside Nigeria but wherever you are seek support from friendly people. Women of Nairaland, support a sister O. You can lift someone via this medium just as you can pull someone down. This lady definitely needs all the "lifting-up" she can get.

I don't know what I can say about your husband O. He needs some serious talking to, like crazy!

Kai! The world is a mystery. However, I can understand why things like this happen- it is a big shame though.Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by Efemena_xy(f): 1:57pm On Aug 07Fantababy sadsad

Having read your post, I do feel really bad for you. Understandably, you would be nervous and scared as this is your first baby - and your hubby isn't being helpful. There's a lot that can be said about his negative attitude and the effect it's having on you, but let's not go there. Let's try to be positive for your sake, and that of your unborn baby.

Firstly, I want you to sit up and tell your self: "I am a strong girl, and I can do this with or without him". Why do I say this? I say it because I want you to depend on no one but yourself for now. Pull up that inner strength from within and use it to get by. Sure, it takes two to make a baby but if he isn't concerned about your welfare from what you've written, go it alone. Don't expect anything from him, so that IF he eventually comes round (i.e gets hold of his senses), then any help from him would be an added bonus to you.

Secondly, make sure you've packed your hospital bags and that of your baby's ready. Ensure you have enough money on your person for a cab to and fro (I'm assuming you're in Naija?), top up your phones, make sure you've got enough phone / recharge cards. Asides your hubby, do you have a birthing partner? Someone who'll be with you during labour? Your sister, a close friend / relative? Again, if your hubby decides to show up and support you on that day, then even better. But make sure you have your PLAN B in place. Here's a more detailed list:

What you need for your hospital pregnancy bag:
Your Medicare card and/or private health insurance details;
Maternity bras
Nighties
Casual day clothes
Slippers/shoes
bosom pads
Maternity pads
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Makeup
Hairbrush
Deodorant
Shampoo
Conditioner
Lip balm
Lots and lots of undies
Any medications you have been taking (please bring the medication to the hospital to show your admitting doctor and arrange for this medication to be returned home)
Any previous pathology reports
X-rays or ultrasounds, your antenatal card
Storage containers for glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, or dentures
A phonecard or change, for public telephones
Magazines
Ipod and charger
Mobile phone and charger

What your baby needs:

Baby clothes and a blanket to take your baby home in
Newborn nappies, if you prefer to use disposable nappies
Snappy Nappy fastener if you are using the hospital's cloth nappies
Ensure a car restraint is organised for taking your baby home
Formula, bottles, teats and sterilising equipment, if you plan to formula-feed
Olive, apricot, almond oil for coating baby's bottom before the first nappy goes to make cleaning easier

What dad/support partner needs:
Swimmers - for assisting you in the water/shower
Change of clothes - they may be there for a long time
Toothpaste/toothbrush
Copy of your birth plan
Mobile phone and charger
List of phone numbers to send an sms
Change for vending machine, phones and parking
Camera, charger and spare film
Video camera and charger
Books, newspapers etc for reading during a long labour
Healthy snacks for both of you
IPod and charger

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by Efemena_xy(f): 2:14pm On Aug 07Thirdly, you mentioned your dad live some distance away from you? So I'm assuming you do have some relatives in that town too? If so, try and ask 1 or 2 females to assist you with going to the market. Purchase your food items in bulk. Things like rice, beans, dried pepper, Palm / Vegetable cooking oil, spices, etc. If you've got constant source of electricity, even better. Buy perishables like meat, fish, chicken, etc and store away in your deep freezer.

Also ask the girl(s) to help you cook in bulk, so you can store away, especially pepper soup. These should last you a couple of weeks after you get home. Trust me, you won't find the time and energy to cook then, the way you can now, especially with the baby in tow.

As for the pelvic pains, speak to your doctor, though I doubt there's much they can do about it. What's happening here is the baby pressing down on your muscles, and your pelvis is also expanding in preparation for the birth. I know it feels like hell 'cos I went through the same thing too. Just hang on in there and it'll soon be over.

And finally, PLEASE, PLEASE AND PLEASE, resist the temptation to get into an argument with your hubby. The last thing you need is developing High BP in pregnancy. If his words or actions offend you, simply say "okay", then get up and leave the room. If na long face im wan carry, let him carry it. You don't need to see that. Learn to pick your battles and live to fight another day. There would be time to address the issues you raised, but NOT NOW. Get some CDs or download your favourite tunes. Listen to music when you feel stressed - it'll help you relax. Get yourself your favourite magazines / books. Go to the saloon. Fix your hair, your nails, pamper yourself, do the things you love doing.

See my signature? What does it say? What doesn't break you only serves to make you stronger. Now go and be happy with yourself.

All the best and safe delivery kiss

I'm surprised you could ask this question Jenny. Plenty men out there are like that. Cook kini?

@ Op,

I totally feel you. I thought I was the only one that felt this way when I was pregnant. I wasn't totally lonely cos I had people around me to pamper me.

Please, take it easy cos there are more sleepless nights to come. Also try and calm your mind, there is no need being scared. All you need is determination and self assurance to scale through this stage and before you know it...you have good news. cheesy

Keep yourself busy, but don't over work yourself. You can rearrange the nursery or even your bedroom. I'm sure there are last minute touches to make it baby friendly. You will be happy doing it.

I agree with both of these. Forget all the suggestions about revenge and fighting. Also check yourself, have you been behaving differently. You said you are melancholic naturally, which i assume will become a lot worse in pregnancy. No one wants to be around a moody person all the time. i think if you take the time and patience to explain things to him, there will be changes. Also explain the hormonal changes and your personality issue. Quite frankly, i personally cant stand moody people. huh. You can also choose to be different and be a happy person. You dont always have to be depressed. You can choose to fight it or get some help. Depressed people can make others depressed or very unhappy. Especially when you are lost in your own bubble.

Is he dafthuh

Or what cave did he crawl out from?? I mean how unaware can someone? huhhuh

So the love starved, food starved, emotionally and physically sick heavily pregnant woman still has to be the one making all the allowances just because one slow eediot can't educate himself.

Any sensible man, who really cares would want to know everything going on with his wife and THEIR baby. I can remember almost passing out from laughter the day I saw my brother reading WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING when his wife was pregnant. He would tell you what stage his wife was from her symptoms. . .she almost went crazy because he will go "Are you sure you are not feeling this because the book says this or the book says that..."

What will it take this useless guy to google? Nothing that's what yet you are telling his wife to be patient with him and explain stuff to him. Sometimes I wonder if some men like women. I mean you are not even talking about her depression, it is all about how it affects YOU!

He is a kid that needs instructions on how to care for his pregnant wife or put his wife and baby first. This is why these men act like jerks cos its okay for them to, just explain to them and things will go back to normal.

Our husbands that took very care of us during preggers are pediatricians, we told them what to do and with their experience in children health, they were able figure thins out. undecided

I ask again, is her husband a kid that needs to be told what to do? Isn't this her first time also?

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by jennykadry(f): 3:56pm On Aug 07It is not okay for a man to treat a neighbour like this let alone his wife. He is a very selfish man. A lot of men out there love and care for their pregnant wives. I remember c/o back pain at night and this man would get soft pillows and place behind my back, when my feet were swollen he would use a pillow to elevate them or assist me on a recliner chair. During the morning sickness period, he would clean up the sink before goin to work. I remember one day after a bad night, he ran a bath for me and "threw" me inside or an hour. The times he refused to go to work cos I was suffering from indigestion. The way he buckled my sandals or tied my shoe laces. The maternity dress and jean shopping ad the times he rung my mum up behind my back to ask for advise on how to handle mood swings which i never knew about until months later. I could go on and on and on.

He had no experience whatsoever but he tried to do things for us. There is no excuse for this man at all. He is just a selfish self centered son of a gun. Sorry OP, I am just too pissed.

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by ronkebp(f): 4:11pm On Aug 07@ Poster, after reading your post (infact, during the reading process) i was so angry, like really mad, that you married someone who is carefree and does not appreciate anything. pele!!! sorry!!!

Now, to the koko, you are an emotional person on a normal day, then add pregnancy ontop with all the hormones, it would sky-rocket, and it would seem as if the man is not doing enough. you want him to cringe and shiver at every, pain and mood, but he also has his moments, maybe at that particular time he was not also in the mood.

- i hate the fact that he does not ask you how you feel and even cooked for himself alone,( that food will come out of his nose, he will definitely not eat that food, if it were me ooo), infact i would have pulled myself out of bed if i hear the clanging of pots, plates and spoons.

- You know who you married, before you became pregnant, you know how he treated you, this pregnancy will come and go with you holding your baby and will probably forget all you went through. So please, you do not want to develop pre-clampsia because of unnecessary stress, buy enough noodles and easy to make foods in the house. look for someone to do groceries for you, because right now, you do not want anybody that will attack you with his frustrations, you have a whole "human being" in you and do not want to stress that poor baby.

- Do not be afraid of anything, your child-birth will be smooth, if i can do it, anyone can do it wink, i never thought i could have a child, because i fear easily, but omo!!! that bay came out with a slam!!! and that was it, Ronke's own flesh and blood. it is worth looking forward too. Start packing you bags and getting ready for the hospital, get alternative help(someone who will drive you to the hospital), incase your hubby is at work when you are in labour.

THEN AFTER THE BABY COMES AND YOU HAVE FULLY RECOVERED, THEN TREAT HIS "Bleep-UP".

Crucify him! crucify him!! crucify him!!! I want to authoritatively tell us that d op is an emotional type and she could get easily irritated when she is in d emotional state. I blv d hubby understands her wify more than everyone of us, therefore, i will profer that she calms down and (stop assuming that d hubby will always read her mind and react perfectly to her)pet him as she makes him understand everthing. I assure her that she will get all d pets she needs in return!
The man might hav been pissed off in one way or d other and d woman is still measuring shoulders with him. Men always want to b on top.so let him feel that he is still on top and u will see d difference.
Am not makin excuses for d man infact, i feel like slappin d hell out of d man but we should know d best genuine help that she could get is from d hubby, afterall, if he didnt love d woman, he wouldnt have married her! Best of luck ma dear fantababy!

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by armyofone(f): 5:18pm On Aug 07this is not about crucifying him. you should help a pregnant woman no matter what.
don't draw away from the real problem and make the woman's personal issue the koko.
the thing is why he is not helping his pregnant wife.
even if she is always moody or cranky, i'm sure she will appreciate the husband making dinner for 2.
if he is that frightful of his moody wife, put the food in the fridge or dinning table and email, page or phone her that the food is ready.

husband is not doing the right thing. she needs to rewrite the cooking rules.

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by ftmom(f): 6:34pm On Aug 07So, what makes him a fantastic husband huh
fantababy: Dear All,

Re: I Am Pregnant, Depressed And Want To Be Pampered by fantababy: 6:59pm On Aug 07Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I feel much better. The funny thing is that we fasted, prayed, cried, sowed seeds before this pregnancy came! I know I can be moody, but I try to always be cheerful.

I don't want to mention a lot of horrible things he says when we have an argument. He can really be sweet at times, but when the other side shows up, it is very bad.

I used to be afraid of him, until late last year. I put my foot down & said never again would I be scared of this man.

We are age mates, so it's not a thing that he is far older than me. We both struggled together to get to where we are.

My comfort is that am not the only one he treats like that. He is just a big bully, who likes to put people down. I can trace his attitude back to his childhood/upbringing.

I pray for him all the time.

I try to gently let him know that pregnancy entails a lot. I give him stories about all the horrible pregnancy risks, I tell him to research more and ask his colleagues about pregnancy. I even tell him ahead of time when my mood is bad.

Am really hurt, and when I try to forgive so as to move ahead, another one happens. Imagine me at 37 weeks pregnancy, getting back from work, making yam & egg, only for me to serve and he says he is not interested in eating again. What was my offense? That I have refused to take my maternity leave.I have explained to him that my tiredness / aches is not due to office work, but it is normal pregnancy syndrome. I let him know that house work is more strenuous that my office work. (My work is as a finance officer and I delegate most of it. I have my own office, so I can sleep whenever I want to).I have explained to him times without number, that we get only 3 months maternity in Nigeria and as such, pregnant women strive to work till the very end or closer to their EDD, so as to have the whole 3 months with the baby.

He is a regular visitor on Nairaland but he visits only the front page. I really don't care if he sees this. I know I have tried and am tired of trying.

Then we have to get this to the front page. Though hard, i want you to also be aware of your moods and how it affects your relationship. Maybe you should read some self help books and things to make you a better person. Fine, he did all these which are very bad. But he may also come here with allegations against you. I think your problem is communication and the guy is a bit immature. I will think if this baby cost you both so much, he will be more compassionate. If he knows your ID on NL, am sure he is reading this silently. You can also direct him to the page so he understands the effects of hi behavior. There is also a thread here that people talk about their pregnancy and how their spouses dealt with it. Goodluck. Just relax and free your mind. You are almost there. Congratulations in advance.
