Smoking laws limit heart attacks

Perhaps living in a ?nanny state? isn?t half bad. A Minnesota County that banned smoking in public places in 2007 experienced a one-third drop in the heart attack rate compared with the period just before the restrictions began to be phased in, researchers report in the Oct. 29 Archives of Internal Medicine.

The study is the longest analysis to date to measure a smoking ordinance?s effect on community-wide heart health, says study coauthor Richard Hurt, an internist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

?Our hope is that this will turn the page on this chapter, and whether secondhand smoke is associated with heart attacks,? Hurt says. ?It is.?

Olmstead County prohibited smoking in restaurants on January 1, 2002 and expanded the ban to all workplaces, including bars, on October 1, 2007. Cigarette smoke inhalation increases heart attack risk, so Hurt and his colleagues calculated the rate of heart attacks during the 18 months preceding the enactment of the first ordinance and the 18 months immediately after the full ban went into effect.

The county has a population of nearly 145,000 people. Medical records show 187 heart attacks there in the 18 months before the first smoking ban and 139 in the same time frame immediately after the full prohibition began. When adjusted to account for demographic changes in the county's population between the two periods, the data revealed an annual heart attack rate of 151 per 100,000 people before and 101 per 100,000 afterward.

Olmstead County is hardly the first to enact curbs on public smoking, but the county benefits from having an exhaustive medical database of its residents to analyze. The new study and a litany of similar findings impress even those who promoted smoking bans early on. ?Initially, when these ordinances were passed, I don?t think anyone really expected to see such a rapid cardiovascular effect,? says Pamela Ling, an internist at the University of California, San Francisco. ?But I think the evidence now ? particularly linking smoke-free policies and real medical outcomes ? is really quite strong.?

The new data reflect less smoke exposure and probably also less smoking per se, she says. ?One of the arguments was that smoke-free policies would restrict it in the workplace but that people would smoke more at home,? Ling says. ?But actually, studies suggest ... that people don?t compensate.?

Hurt says he hopes the emerging antismoking ethic will now spread to automobiles. When someone smokes in a car, he says, ?the concentration of secondhand smoke is just amazing.?

Increasing Traffic With Article Marketing Through Article Directories And Ezines

Article Body:
Writing hundreds of articles in your related niche and making them available for distribution through article directories and ezines is one of the best strategies for increasing targeted traffic to your website. Considering getting your articles published online is free, article marketing is also most cost-effective strategy for increasing targeted traffic to your website.

?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's how article marketing through article directories and ezines drives traffic to your website:

* When your key-word rich article is published by established ezines that are highly ranked by major search engines, your article could very well zoom up to the top ten results for that keyword search. This is something you could hardly hope to achieve on your own. Anyone who clicks on to the link and reads your article will also click on the link to your website, which can be accessed from the author's box that is featured at the end of the article. An added benefit of getting traffic using this method is that the traffic is likely to be highly targeted traffic, which is the only kind that matters in the end. Whoever arrives at your site via this route has clicked on the link to your article and read your article.? Because they are impressed with what they read, they would have immediately acknowledged your proficiency in the area and have now come to your site looking for the more information from you.

* Writing a valuable and informative niche-related articles and publishing them with reputed ezines establishes you as an authority in the field. This recognition can give you the competitive edge against other businesses in the same niche as customers prefer to buy from someone who knows what they are talking about. An unexpected bonus- taking the time and trouble to write articles and get them published through ezines and article directories indicates that you are not some scam-artist or fly-by-night marketer out to make a few quick bucks on the internet. Publishing articles regularly with ezines and article directories gives you and your business extra credibility and also helps you build a rapport with your prospective clients. People who buy on the internet and who are looking for the product you are offering, would prefer to buy from you rather than somebody they cannot trust.

* Submitting your articles to the right article directories helps you to build up valuable back links by having these article directories link to your optimized web pages by way of your article. Obtaining several relevant back links helps you enhance your search engine rankings, pushing your web page to the top 10 rankings for your optimized keywords. While this may not happen overnight, it's a sure fire way of eventually getting your web page right where it can be seen to all those who matter.

* Some ezine publishers even archive their ezine on their site. This offers potential customers the chance to check out back issues before they make a commitment to subscribe. Getting your article archived means it can be viewed over and over again several years down the line, increasing your exposure tremendously and driving traffic to your site several years after the article was first published.

* Another way to increase traffic to your website is by allowing ezine publishers to include your articles in their free Ebooks. This increases the exposure of your article even more and anyone interested in visiting your website can easily do so by clicking in the link contained in your resource box.

* Some ezine publishers allow their visitors to republish articles that are featured in the free content directory on their website, the only caveat being that the author resource box that accompanies every article is featured along with the article. There's no saying where your articles are likely to end up and who will be reading them! Your article could pique the interest of somebody who had till that moment not the slightest inclination to buy whatever it is you are offering. And if the quality of your product matches the high quality of your article you will have converted yet another curious visitor into a loyal customer.

If you've been hesitating to submit your articles to ezines on the premise that you would like to get paid for articles that you write and publish, then it's time you woke up to the extended? benefits of article marketing through ezines and article directories. It drives traffic that too, not any old traffic but quality, targeted traffic stampeding to your site without costing you a dime. Think of all the money you would have spent to attract the same volume of potential customers by any of the more conventional forms of advertising.
Here are a few factors that will help you choose the right article directory to submit your article to:
* Look for article directories that have been in business for more than a year. Article directories that have been in existence longer would rank higher with the major search engines and would also have a larger reader base.
* Article directories that feature less than 1,000 authors have not hit the big time yet and are best avoided. Look for article directories that have over one to five thousand authors.
* Ideally, a good article directory should be powered by humans and should have the name of the owner or the person in charge clearly visible. Absence of either one of these factors indicates that the owner does not want to be held accountable and that the site is fully automated, which means there is nobody policing the quality of the content. Better to avoid being associated with such a site.
* If your e-mails go unanswered for more than 48 hours it speaks of dismal lack of service and is an indication of worse to come after you join up.
Getting your article published in a few carefully selected article directories and ezines will guarantee better exposure of high quality rather than getting your article published in several sub-standard article directories.

Should you don?t know what you will be carrying out, you plumbing cape town may really damage on your own or help make your house dangerous. Don?t get worried, the tips listed here can help you steer clear of this.

Domestic plumbing

When focusing on house domestic plumbing assignments it?s generally a great idea to shut down the water. Shutting from the h2o can prevent any probable water pipe harm during fix procedure. It will also protect against normal water from floods to your house and leading to pricey water damage which can be a burden to fix.

Check your water lines and plumbing related on a regular basis. Clogs in basins, tubs, and lavatories can result in h2o rear-ups. Floods from back-ups can produce an dreadful mess and trigger huge quantities of high-priced harm. Slow-moving relocating drains can cause wedding rings of debris to seem with your tubs and kitchen sinks, making a awkward concern. It is recommended to always keep in addition to and take off clogs routinely.

Would it be less costly to make it happen your self or pay out someone else? If you opt to completely re-do your bathrooms, but know absolutely nothing about plumbing related, it may be helpful to shell out a local plumber in the future in. Also, you can check out the self-help textbooks in your neighborhood constructing offer. Don?t forget to ask. A simple undertaking shouldn?t cost more as a consequence of inexperience.

Before you begin home improvements sign up for the right creating permits. Any redesigning that concerns plumbing, electric power, or architectural adjustments can demand a allow. Check your nearby laws and regulations. If you continue without having a make it possible for then you can definitely be fined or it might have the house harder to sell down the road.

To Win a Nobel, Don't Speak | The Cornell Daily Sun

Issues come and go with each American presidential cycle, but one thing that seems to have stayed constant for the past several cycles is China-bashing. With all the political accusations flying around ? of China stealing jobs, stealing intellectual property, manipulating its currency and dumping exports ? the decision to award the Nobel Prize in Literature to Mo Yan (real name Guan Moye) added to this conversation. Mo isn?t the first Chinese writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, but the Chinese government would want you to think that. Days after he won the prize, Chinese officials sent out this censorship directive:

?To all websites nationwide: In light of Mo Yan winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, monitoring ? ?must be strengthened. Be firm in removing all comments which disgrace the Party and the government, defame cultural work, mention Nobel laureates Liu Xiaobo and Gao Xingjian and associated harmful material. Without exception, block users from posting for ten days if their writing contains malicious details. Reinforce on-duty staff during the weekend and prioritize this management task.?

Liu Xiaobo seems like an obvious choice because he won the Nobel Peace Prize campaigning for human rights in China. But Gao Xingjian is technically the first Chinese writer that won the Literature Prize for works written in Chinese. The only problem was that he was exiled to France for pro-democracy sentiments and condemning the Tiananmen Square massacre.?

Mo Yan ? which means ?don?t speak? in Chinese ? happens to not be critical of the government, unlike his pesky colleagues. He?s a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He is the vice chairman of the state-run Writers Association. He boycotted events that included dissident writers. He honored Mao, whose policies may have killed more people than Stalin?s, by hand copying a speech Mao made condemning Beethoven and Chopin as ?bourgeois decadence? and that ?literature and art are subordinate to politics.? He wrote a victory poem to the disgraced politician Bo Xilai: ?Sing-red-strike-black roars mightily ? ?as an official you hold dear your good name in history.?

It?s fair to say that an artist?s oeuvre shouldn?t be judged with his or ?her political leanings: Leni Riefenstahl?s Nazi propaganda film Olympia about the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics is one example. Chinese students reacted similarly when Gao Xingjian won in 2000: they liked his plays, not his politics. Yet Mo Yan has refuted this, beginning The Garlic Ballads with this Stalin quote: ?Novelists are forever trying to distance themselves from politics, but the novel itself closes in on politics. Novelists are so concerned with ?man?s fate? that they tend to lose sight of their own fate. Therein lies their tragedy.? This might mean Mo?s being shrewd by subtly criticizing the government, but he himself said that writers aren?t restrained at all in present-day China. Has ?hallucinatory realism,? the CCP?s favorite new catchphrase from Mo?s award declaration, affected Mo?s mental capacity?

Chinese dissidents are predictably dismayed. ?Mo Yan, the first Chinese Nobel winner who lives inside China but outside a prison,? one writes bitterly. ?For those Chinese pursuing freedom, it?s very unfair,? someone agreed. ?Are people in the Swedish Academy a bunch of decrepits or what?? someone asks incredulously. Ai Weiwei tweeted, ?A writer is a liar if he can?t face truth; a literary prize is a curse on conscience if it shuns the question of justice.??

Ai?s tweet points out a serious flaw with defenses, pointing out ?subversive elements? in Mo Yan?s work like describing ?corrupt authority.? Mo describes corrupt local officials, but they are something everybody already knows about. The big systemic issues that target the Politburo ? the issues that matter ? are never mentioned. The closest he gets to this is in his novel Red Sorghum, but that deals with Japanese atrocities and is hardly bad for the CCP with recent anti-Japanese sentiment. ?Now that Mo has won the Nobel Prize for Literature, Chinese officials will feel vindicated, and this only means bad things for dissidents. Mo may have said he wants to see Liu ?freed,? but that won?t lead anywhere ? it seems more like a ploy to look legitimate in the West. I?ll believe him when he starts talking about Tiananmen Square.?

Yes, I am bitter. The Nobel Prizes are inherently political, but if they must be politicized they should at least follow the original intentions of their founder. Alfred Nobel specified that the prize should be awarded to the person who had ?the most outstanding work in an idealistic direction.? How is compromising your own beliefs idealistic? The Nobel committee should be awarding prizes to more people like Liu Xiaobo and Gao Xingjian, who actually have ideals. The Nobel also has nothing to do with talent: if Ibsen, Proust and Tolstoy didn?t win, then Mo Yan can live without a Nobel Prize. The award only gives officials a bigger power trip to censor more, which is detrimental to a culture that has been stifled since one of the biggest intellectual repressions in modern history, 1956?s Hundred Flowers Campaign.?

Officials might even be repressing the next laureate for the Literature Prize, but no one will ever know because he?s locked up, under a trumped up tax charge, learning his lesson: ?don?t speak.??

Rainbow trout: Survival of the shyest?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A fish's personality can influence how it responds to, and learns from threats, according to a new study by Professor Grant Brown from Concordia University in Canada and his colleagues. Their work, looking at how personality influences a fish's memory of a predator threat, shows that bold trout forget predator odor, and hence potentially predator threat, quicker than shy trout. The research is published online in Springer's journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.

A prey's ability to balance the conflicting demands of avoiding predators and foraging, defending territories and/or mating depends on the availability of reliable information regarding predator threats. As predators can be present in different locations and at different times, learning and retaining information about a predator threat, and being able to recall it at a later stage, is key to better assess relevant threats in the future.

Brown and team studied how long juvenile rainbow trout retained information they had previously learned about a predator, and whether the duration of retention was influenced by the fish's personality i.e. whether they were 'shy' or 'bold'.

The trout were classified as either shy or bold depending on how quickly they escaped from test tanks once a movable Plexiglas barrier was removed. Those who moved quickly displayed risk-taking behavior -- the bold fish; those who moved more cautiously were avoiding risk -- the shy fish.

The researchers conditioned the individual trout to recognize the odor of pumpkinseed, a freshwater fish and trout predator. They then tested whether they still recognised the odor, both 24 hours and eight days later.

They found that the fish's personality shaped how long the information was retained. Although there was no difference in the fish's odor recognition during the conditioning phase or after 24 hours, shy trout continued to demonstrate a learned response to pumpkinseed odor eight days later, while bold trout did not. These results suggest that the behavioral tactic employed at the time of conditioning i.e. risk-taking or risk-avoiding, influences the memory window of acquired information.

U.S. prepared to meet one-on-one with Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to prevent that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor said in a statement. He noted that efforts to get Iran back to the table with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany ? the so-called "P5+1" ? continue.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election campaign and Vietor's statement was released shortly after The New York Times reported Saturday that the U.S. and Iran have agreed in principle for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Vietor, however, denied that any such agreement had been reached.

"It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," he said. We continue to work with the P5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally."

Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet Monday night in a debate focusing on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear ambitions will likely be a topic. Obama has said he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy, which began during President George W. Bush's administration, hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort. Romney has accused Obama of being weak on Iran and says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

Despite unprecedented global penalties, Iran's nuclear program is advancing as it continues to defy international pressure, including four rounds of sanctions from the U.N. Security Council, to prove that its atomic intentions are peaceful.

Those sanctions, coupled with tough measures imposed by the United States and European nations are taking their toll, particularly on Iran's economy. Iranian authorities have in recent weeks been forced to quell protests over the plummeting value of the country's currency, the rial. The rial lost nearly 40 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar in a week in early October, but has since slightly rebounded.

U.S. officials say they are hopeful that pressure from the sanctions may be pushing Iran's leaders toward concessions, including direct talks with the United States. But several said on Saturday that they did not believe such discussions would happen any time soon.

If one-on-one talks are to occur, they would likely follow the model that the U.S. has used in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea, the officials said.

In those discussions, U.S. negotiators have met separately with their North Korean counterparts but only as part of the larger effort, which also involves China, Japan, South Korea and Russia. Direct U.S.-North Korean talks are preceded and followed by intense consultations with the other members of the group.

However, the direct talks with North Korea have yet to bear fruit and U.S. officials warned that talks with Iran may not yield anything either. If U.S.-Iran talks do occur, they would likely be part of the P5+1 process, which groups the Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States and is overseen by the European Union. The group has met numerous times with Iranian officials but has yet to achieve any significant progress.

In late September, the group instructed EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to reach out to Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, to organize another meeting. No date had been set for the possible resumption of talks.

Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes but Western nations fear the Islamic republic is determined to develop nuclear weapons and fundamentally reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. That would pose a grave threat to Israel.

Israel has threatened to strike Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran doesn't stop uranium enrichment a process that can be a pathway to nuclear arms. Israel could decide to strike Iran's nuclear sites on its own, and Israeli leaders say time to act is running out. They have also hinted they would like U.S. support for any such attack.

An Israeli strike on Iran with or without Washington's involvement would likely draw retribution from Tehran including possible attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests overseas or disruptions to the transit of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, which could send oil prices skyrocketing.

Obama has counseled patience as public as American public support for another Mideast conflict is low with the Iraq war over and the conflict in Afghanistan winding down.

Viral alliances overcoming plant defenses

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Washington State University researchers have found that viruses will join forces to overcome a plant's defenses and cause more severe infections.

"These findings have important implications in our ability to control these viruses," says Hanu Pappu, Sam Smith Distinguished Professor of Plant Virology and chair of WSU's Department of Plant Pathology. "Mixed infections are quite common in the field, and now we know that viruses in these mixed infections are helping each other at the genetic level to overcome host defenses and possibly lead to the generation of new viruses."

Pappu publishes his findings in the latest issue of the journal PLOS ONE. Joining him are Ph.D. student Sudeep Bag and Neena Mitter, associate professor at Australia's University of Queensland.

The researchers focused on iris yellow spot virus and tomato spotted wilt virus after Bag discovered that, when they infect the same plant, they helped each other overcome a plant's defense response. With Mitter's help and sophisticated molecular techniques, Bag found both viruses dramatically changed their genetic expression, breaking down the plant's defenses and leading to more severe disease.

Bag also found that genes from the tomato spotted wilt virus seemed to "aid and abet" iris yellow spot virus as it spread throughout the plant and caused more disease.

Growers should take this phenomenon into account, says Pappu, with broader management tactics that target more than one virus and possible variations.

The research was funded in part by the Specialty Crops Research Initiative of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

10,000 Muslim Protesters Demonstrate At Google UK HQ Over YouTube Film

Screen Shot 2012-10-15 at 16.36.01It's probably a little tricky to raise a protest march consisting of 10,000 Muslims outside the Googleplex in Mountain View, Santa Clara. But in the centre of London, it happens to be a cinch. Especially when they can simply bus and train in from other parts of the UK. So it's with no doubt just a little trepidation that Google UK - and its offices across Europe - faces ongoing mass protests from Muslims protesting about trailers for the anti-Islamic film 'The Innocence of Muslims' which appeared on YouTube recently and lead to worldwide protests and the death of a US ambassador. Google refuses to remove the videos. And so the protests look set to continue for many weeks to come. Eventually a million-strong march in Hyde Park is planned. So while YouTube HQ will be sunning itself in balmy Silicon Valley climes, it's likely that we will see a wave of continuing protests in Europe, and outside Google's beleaguered offices.

Festival-like atmosphere for shuttle Endeavour's Los Angeles move

LOS ANGELES | Sat Oct 13, 2012 1:02pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The retired space shuttle Endeavour was greeted with a festival-like atmosphere in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood on Saturday, where it has paused from its snail-like crawl through narrow city streets towards its new home at a local museum.

Endeavour nosed out of Los Angeles International Airport before dawn on Friday to begin a two-day, 12-mile (19-km) journey atop a massive wheeled transporter to the California Science Center on the edge of downtown.

The shuttle, which flew from 1992 to 2011, will become a tourist attraction at the center. Endeavour was largely built in Southern California and was a workhorse of the U.S. space program, flying 25 missions.

Thousands of area residents, many of whom walked a mile or more to get to where the shuttle was parked outside an arena on Saturday morning, celebrated the icon's visit to their neighborhood with food trucks and music.

Two brothers from the area, German and Joseph Raudales, watched the shuttle with smiles on their faces.

"I'm excited, I want to be an astronaut when I grow up," said 10-year-old Joseph Raudales.

The shuttle is 122 feet long and 78 feet wide and stands 5 stories tall at the tail - which police said makes it the largest object ever to move through Los Angeles. Its combined weight with the transporter is 80 tons.

Organizers say only a few inches separate Endeavour's wings from structures along the route, and workers have felled 400 trees along curbs to clear a path. The science center will plant more than 1,000 trees to make up for their loss.

Some street lights, traffic signals, power poles and parking meters also have been temporarily removed.

OTHER SHUTTLES FIND HOMES

The project to move Endeavour will cost over $10 million, said Shell Amega, a spokeswoman for the science center. Charitable foundations and corporations have donated money and services for the move.

The center beat out a number of other institutions when the U.S. space agency NASA chose it last year as the permanent home for Endeavour, which was taken out of service because of the end of the shuttle program.

Endeavour has hop-scotched across the country from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the back of a modified Boeing 747. It had been parked at the airport in Los Angeles since arriving on September 21 after a ceremonial piggyback flight around California.

Endeavour was built to replace Challenger, using spare parts from two prior shuttles, according to Ken Phillips, aerospace curator at the science center. Challenger was lost in a 1986 accident that killed seven astronauts.

The shuttle will be displayed in a temporary hangar-style metal structure to protect it from the elements. In 2017, a 200-foot-tall (61-meter) structure will open in which Endeavour will stand vertically, Phillips said.

The other remaining shuttles also have found homes.

The Smithsonian in Washington has Discovery at its Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center museum in Virginia. New York City has the prototype shuttle Enterprise at its Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. And the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral has Atlantis, which the center will move to an on-site visitors complex next month.

Djokovic, Federer advance at Shanghai Masters

SHANGHAI (AP) ? With another win at the Shanghai Masters, Roger Federer guaranteed himself the No. 1 ranking for the 300th week of his career.

The top-ranked Federer beat Davis Cup teammate Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0 on Thursday in the third round.

Federer struggled to string points together early, with his backhand looking shaky through much of the first two sets, but he recovered late and advanced to the quarterfinals.

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray also reached the quarters. Djokovic defeated Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-3 and Murray beat Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-2, 6-2.

The second-seeded Djokovic had 12 aces and won 27 of 29 first-serve points. The third game of the second set was the only time in the match that the Serb lost two points on serve.

"I'm trying to enjoy the efficiency of my serve," said Djokovic, who had three aces in one game in the first set. "I'm not very well known around the tour for big serving. But so far in this tournament, and also in Beijing, it has been working very well for me. It has been giving me a lot of free points, a lot of confidence into the matches."

Fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic defeated Sam Querrey of the United States 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4, and fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival 2012 - [CONTEST - Mr YYC

Oh, autumn. You mark the arrival of such lovely events. Like the changing of the leaves. And the crispening of the air. And the rockying of the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival!

This mountainous member of the Calgary wine scene returns this very weekend. This will be the 15th year of the Fest, and it will once again showcase a plethora of world-class wine, spirits, imported and micro-brewed beers, and an abundance of local culinary creations.

Do you think there?s something for your tastes? Get this: on the festival?s lists of attending wineries and other vendors, I counted 171 wine producers, 45 brewers, 18 liqueur makers, and then I stopped counting. But there are also makers of rum, makers of scotch whisky, makers of vodka, and makers of merry (that?ll be me!). ?Wait,? you say! ?That?s too much!? Well, there?s also 14 pages, count ?em, 14? of food vendors. Time for thanks giving, indeed.

The Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival is very accessible. Tickets to attend are only $29.50, with sampling coupons priced at $0.50 each. Each sample will range from one to twenty coupons, depending upon the item. This will be my first time at the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival, but I?m told by friends who have attended that it is one of the best events of the year.

The folks at Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival have been kind enough to offer up two complimentary tickets for MrYYC readers, and I will be doing a random draw to determine a winner. (ETA: I?ll be there on Friday. Track me down and you?ll also get 40 sampling coupons courtesy of moi!) Here?s how to get into that draw:

  • Leave a comment in this blog post identifying one of the wineries, distilleries, breweries, restaurants, or any other vendor that is scheduled to appear at the 2012 Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival in Calgary. (1 entry)
  • Tweet the following phrase on Twitter (1 entry)

?

Rules: The contest closes on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 9:00 pm. One winner will be drawn at random and the winner posted here and on Twitter. You may get a maximum of two entries into the draw, one entry for each of the entry methods above.
?
The complimentary tickets are for the Friday, October 12 session (4:00 pm to 10:00 pm). When presented at the door, these tickets will allow for complimentary access into the Grand Tasting Hall. Tickets are not transferable to Saturday?s session. This is an adult only event. All attendees must be 18 years or older. Minors (including infants) are not permitted to attend.
