What do you charge for limited service property management?

So today?s blog will be fun. We get leads from a variety of places. One of those is from 3rd party companies whom we pay for the leads. Today we got an inquiry that we needed to share so that everyone could learn. (all personal information will be withheld to protect the parties involved)

Here?s the excerpt:

Property Type: Single Home or Condo (valued under $250k)
Address: See Note Below
City: Austin
State: TX
Zip Code: 78753
Other Details:
Property occupied by owner
Individual is not an association board member
Comments: ?I am looking for a house to buy in Austin, TX. It will likely be
in Northeast Austin (N of 1983/290, E of Lamar). I am seeking limited
management service. I travel a lot so I need some one to look in on the
house every two week (eg for a water break or other major item) and to have
the lawn mowed. That?s all I need. Can you provide this service? What would
you charge? Thank you. XXXXXXXXXXX Since i travel a lot, the best way
to reach me is via email to?xxxxxxxxxxx@yahoo.ca.?

?

So, with this in mind how can we best help this inquiry/person?

First let me say if you have no idea what you?re doing in real estate, save your money and take someone to lunch that does.

Let?s take this from the start. This geographic area is?.let?s say I wouldn?t put my money there and leave it at that so I don?t get into trouble.

Limited management service:

Our base rate is $80/month for single family residential full service management. How much less do you want to pay? Businesses set up processes and services for a reason and typically it?s not only to make money. These processes and services are in place because A. the market desires them B. They are either required or the best course of action given the entire picture and C. They are cost effective for the customer and the company. Any service provider that is willing to alter their business model to suit one customer won?t be in business long.

To look in on the house every two weeks would require someone to drive out, disturb the tenant and would cost about $45/trip. This equals more than our monthly min. and would infuriate the tenant if not force them to sue the person not giving them peaceable use of the premises they are paying for.

Mowing the lawn: Why would you pay to mow the lawn as an owner? This is lost revenue for a bill typically paid for or completed by tenants in this particular area. This isn?t a $1,000,000 property where services like this are expected. Plus if you mow the yard in this neighborhood I can promise you?re the only one in the neighborhood that is maintaining their yard.

What would we charge: We wouldn?t. We don?t take clients money and offer them a poor, ill advised service in return. We offer quality and honesty.

Owners, Investors, Future Clients, if real estate investments isn?t your game, there is no shame with that. When I go to the Dentist the last thing I?m going to do is start asking for services I might think I need. If you don?t know the ropes, it?s 100% ok but find someone that?s in the business you trust and like and take them to lunch. One meal can save you thousands of $$$$. None of us know it all but many of us specialize and are experts at what we do. If you?re seeking a Dentist we can?t help you. If you?re seeking expert real estate advice and property management services in Austin Texas call us today. That we can do to perfection.

BTW: Perlas is just down the street and it?s really good for lunch. :)

Times Communications Executive Is Leaving - NYTimes.com

Robert Christie, senior vice president of corporate communications for The New York Times Company, is leaving the company and his position is being eliminated, The Times announced Wednesday.

In a memo to the staff Mark Thompson, the company?s chief executive, credited Mr. Christie with building up the Times?s communications team, one he said would ?continue to serve The New York Times Company after Bob leaves.? He added that Eileen Murphy, vice president of corporate communications, will now lead the department.

?Bob?s extensive experience and broad range of contacts in the industry have been very valuable over the past three years,? Mr. Thompson wrote.

Mr. Christie, who joined The Times from The Wall Street Journal in 2010, is part of a series of layoffs and buyouts that have been taking place at the company in recent months. In December, Scott Heekin-Canedy, another senior executive, retired, and the company said it would eliminate his position. In December, The Times started to offer buyout packages to 30 members of the newsroom who do not belong to the Guild. Employees volunteering to take these buyouts must accept them by next week.

Wendy's 4Q adj. profit tops Wall Street's view

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) ? Wendy's new value menu and focus on premium burgers helped its fiscal fourth-quarter net income top Wall Street expectations, the hamburger chain said Thursday.

Results show Wendy's push to position itself on the higher end of the fast-food pecking order in terms of quality seems to have gained some traction. Wendy's has also begun revamping restaurants with a modern look with causal seating areas more reminiscent of fast-casual chains such as Panera Bread Co.

Wendy's net income jumped to $22.4 million, or 6 cents per share, for the three months ended Dec. 30. That's up sharply from $4 million, or 1 cent per share, a year earlier. The current quarter's results included a tax benefit, lower interest expense and a sharp rise in investment income. Removing impairment charges, facility relocation costs and other items, adjusted earnings were 8 cents per share.

Revenue increased 2 percent to $629.9 million from $615 million.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of 4 cents per share on revenue of $637 million.

Wendy's, known for its Frosty shakes and square burgers, said that revenue at company-run North American restaurants open at least 15 months and remodeled restaurants reopened at least three straight months slipped 0.2 percent. The figure fell 0.6 percent for franchised restaurants. The performances are compared with the prior-year period, which included results from the introduction of its Dave's Hot 'n Juicy cheeseburgers.

Earlier this month Wendy's announced that it was switching to a "Right Price Right Size" value menu that includes items ranging from 99 cents to $1.99. The menu replaced its 99-cent value menu. At a time when costs for meat, cheese and other ingredients are rising, the revamped menu is intended to give budget-minded diners more options, while giving Wendy's more flexibility on pricing.

For the full year, Wendy's reported earnings from continuing operations of 1 cent per share. Adjusted earnings were 16 cents per share. Revenue rose 3 percent to $2.51 billion.

Revenue at both company-run and franchised North American restaurants open at least 15 months and remodeled restaurants reopened at least three straight months increased 1.6 percent.

Wendy's Co. still expects fiscal 2013 adjusted earnings of 18 cents to 20 cents per share. Wall Street forecasts adjusted earnings of 17 cents per share.

Shares rose 15 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $5.05 in midday trading. Its shares have traded in a 52-week range of $4.09 to $5.42.

The Dublin, Ohio, company's guidance assumes a 2 percent to 3 percent increase in revenue at company-run North American restaurants open at least 15 months and remodeled restaurants reopened at least three straight months.

The chain plans to report its finalized results for the fourth-quarter and full-year on Feb. 28. It had 6,560 restaurants globally as of Dec. 30.

Operation Red October: The top-secret global espionage campaign that's been running for five years

A rogue group is covertly collecting top-secret data with an infrastructure rivaling Flame and Stuxnet

Russian antivirus firm Kaspersky Labs has uncovered a high-level cyber-espionage campaign that has been targeting government agencies, research institutions, and diplomats for the past five years to gather "classified information and geopolitical intelligence," per a report published on Monday. Here's what we know about operation "Red October," which has some hallmarks of government-sponsored C++ computer viruses Flame and Stuxnet?that came before it:?

What's going on exactly?
A sophisticated digital infrastructure that's utilizing a chain of more than 60 command-and-control servers is silently gathering data from high-profile targets around the world, and avoiding detection. Whoever is behind the operation has been compiling troves of top-secret documents and files from computers, smartphones, and external storage hardware like USB sticks since 2007.?Kasperksy says the campaign is still active, with a complexity that rivals the Flame virus?allegedly used by the U.S. and Israel to spy on Iran's nuclear efforts.

Who's being targeted?
Most of the targets are in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, but more than 60 countries have been hit; accounts have been compromised in the U.S., Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, Japan, Spain, and more. Kaspersky declined to disclose the identities of the targets, but Kim Zetter at Wired notes that the agencies and institutions involved relate to "nuclear and energy research and companies in the oil and gas and aerospace industries."?

How does the attack work?
The Red October worm first infiltrates computers using email attachments ? things like Word and Excel files. Once a computer is infected, that data is beamed back to a still-invisible command server mothership, which assigns each victim's computer a 20-hex digit code to identify it. This foothold, more alarmingly, can spread to mobile devices like smartphones, or even entire enterprise networks like Cisco to steal account information and passwords from databases. They also help hackers reinfect machines in case the malware is removed by antivirus scanners. The techniques and code likely have Chinese origins, and have been used in previous attacks targeting?Tibetan activists and military in Asia. (Click here for a detailed walkthrough of how the attack works.)

Who's behind it?
Unlike Flame and Stuxnet, Red October probably isn't a government-sponsored enterprise. Rather, Kasperspy says the cybercriminals behind this worm are most likely based in Russia, and are looking to sell their intelligence for a premium on the black market to governments and others willing to pay.?

What kind of information are they gathering?
They're taking everything: .pdf files, Excel spreadsheets, and documents with .acid extensions, which are run through Acid Cryptofiler, an encryption program used by the French military and NATO. The virus "can also scrub enterprise network equipment and removable disk drives, copy entire email databases from Outlook storage and POP/IMAP servers, and it can even take deleted files off USB sticks using its own recovery mechanism," says Eric Limer at Gizmodo. "Red October doesn't mess around."

What's being done to stop it?
The investigation is still ongoing. Per the report published Monday:?"Kaspersky Lab, in collaboration with international organizations, Law Enforcement, Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) and other IT security companies is continuing its investigation of Operation Red October by providing technical expertise and resources for remediation and mitigation procedures."

  • "The Bachelor"

<strong>"The Bachelor," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> You really think we've seen the last rose handed out? Not in a million years. ABC has already tapped their next "Bachelorette," and we know they'll have their eyes peeled for a hot rejected man from that spinoff to be the next "Bachelor."

  • "The Bachelorette"

<strong>"The Bachelorette," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Bachelor" Brad's also-ran Emily Maynard is getting her turn as the rose giver for the seventh season of "The Bachelorette" this summer. As long as there are people willing to look for love on reality TV, this show will keep on trucking.

  • "Body of Proof"

<strong>"Body of Proof," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Body of Proof" has been falling below its timeslot competitor, CBS's "Unforgettable," but it still draws a decent audience and its fans are very vocal. ABC has decided it deserves a third season.

  • "Castle"

<strong>"Castle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show's ratings have definitely suffered without "Dancing With the Stars" airing beforehand, but it is a consistent performer. And now that Castle and Beckett's relationship is evolving, a fifth season of "oh yes they will" is a no-brainer.

  • "Charlie's Angels"

<strong>"Charlie's Angels," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not really a shock for anybody, but "Charlie's Angels" is cooked. Flimsy story, bad remake, questionable casting.

  • "Cougar Town"

<strong>"Cougar Town," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed -- for TBS!<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The Season 3 ratings weren't boosted much by holding this show until midseason, but ABC's wonky air schedule also didn't help ... which is why the news that TBS has picked up the show for a fourth season is huge. Cheers with your Big Carl!

  • "Dancing With the Stars"

<strong>"Dancing With the Stars," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "DWTS" may have lost its luster in the ratings, but if the viewers are still coming.

  • "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23"

<strong>"Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC's new bleep-worthy comedy starring Krysten Ritter, Dreama Walker and James Van Der Beek is a funny one, and definitely embraces the quirk (Beek Jeans!), so we're excited to see what they do with a second season.

  • "Desperate Housewives"

<strong>"Desperate Housewives," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After countless deaths, murders, betrayals and natural disasters on Wisteria Lane over the show's eight seasons, the ladies of "Desperate Housewives" will say goodbye forever this May.

  • "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"

<strong>"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After a whopping nine seasons, the do-gooding show came to an end in January. But worry not, it will continue to have a few specials to make viewers cry tears of joy.

  • "GCB"

<strong>"GCB," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Desperate Housewives"-esque dramedy premiered to less than 8 million viewers, and the phenomenal cast (Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Leslie Bibb) couldn't bring in a Texas-sized audience, so ABC canceled it.

  • "Grey's Anatomy"

<strong>"Grey's Anatomy," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' medical drama is a ratings juggernaut, even in its eighth season, and with most of her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/greys-anatomy-ellen-pompeo_n_1506113.html?ref=tv" target="_hplink">big stars signed on for more</a>, ABC gave the go-ahead for a ninth season.

  • "Happy Endings"

<strong>"Happy Endings," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show is way too "ca-yute" to bubble it, and obviously someone high up at ABC agrees. After its first season was moved around and aired all out of order, the network still gave it another chance to find its audience in Season 2 ... and it has, and hopefully will continue to in Season 3.

  • "Last Man Standing"

<strong>"Last Man Standing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ratings for Tim Allen's return to sitcoms have been very strong, making it Tuesday's most-watched comedy. If you can beat "Glee" and "The Biggest Loser," a second season is a given.

  • "Man Up!"

    <strong>"Man Up!," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC pulled the show after eight episodes.

  • "The Middle"

<strong>"The Middle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, "The Middle" is still holding onto its middle position in the ratings on Wednesday nights, and that seems just about right. It doesn't do "American Idol" or "Survivor" numbers, of course, but with over 7 million viewers, it's a strong comedy for the network that easily beats anything NBC is offering.

  • "Missing"

<strong>"Missing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ashley Judd lead this drama about a former CIA agent whose son goes missing, kicking her back into action to find him. The series was only set to air 10 episodes, miniseries-style, with the potential for more, but a cancellation means that's all they're getting.

  • "Modern Family"

<strong>"Modern Family," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Modern Family" remains ABC's biggest sitcom success story of the last decade, both in ratings and awards love. This critical darling is getting a fourth season of hijinks with the hilarious Pritchett-Dunphy clan.

  • "Once Upon A Time"

<strong>"Once Upon A Time," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Once Upon a Time" has gotten praise for being one of the more family-friendly dramas on TV, and it's been pulling in close to 10 million viewers each week because of it. We're excited by the almost endless possibilities for new fairy tale-inspired stories to tackle in Season 2.

  • "Pan Am"

<strong>"Pan Am," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Poor "Pan Am" just never quite took off. The series' vintage look actually worked against it, much like NBC's swiftly canceled "Playboy Club" -- guess when you're being compared to award-winning shows like "Mad Men," it makes it more than a little tough to live up to the hype.

  • "Private Practice"

<strong>"Private Practice," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Private Practice" has never gotten "Grey's Anatomy"-level ratings, and things got shakier when ABC bumped it to Tuesday nights to make room for creator Shonda Rhimes' <em>other</em> new show, "Scandal," but they've given the show a sixth season order.

  • "Revenge"

<strong>"Revenge," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With a clever mix of drama, mystery and serious revenge-ing, this is hands down one of the most addictive new shows on TV, and we can't wait to see where they take things in Season 2.

  • "The River"

<strong>"The River," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The promise of "Paranormal Activity"-like scares each week quickly fizzled after this show premiered, along with the ratings. The first season's eight episodes came and went, and ABC has nixed any plans for more.

  • "Scandal"

<strong>"Scandal," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' latest show isn't about doctors at all -- and that's why we're glad it's sticking around. Kerry Washington is amazing as Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. fixer with a crack team of specialists helping make bad headlines vanish before they're ever written. Here's hoping for more than seven episodes in its second season.

  • "Shark Tank"

<strong>"Shark Tank," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, this reality competition show is unlike any other on network TV and ABC is keeping it around for more for that very reason.

  • "Suburgatory"

<strong>"Suburgatory," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It's smart, quick and not too cute -- "Suburgatory" is consistently named the sitcom you should be watching, but probably aren't. The great cast makes this one a no-brainer, and the ratings have stayed pretty consistent, too. We're thrilled it's getting a second season to shine!

  • "Work It"

    <strong>"Work It," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Let us count the ways ...

  • "2 Broke Girls"

<strong>"2 Broke Girls," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>At first, people balked at the racist supporting characters, but now it seems that audiences are all over "2 Broke Girls" -- it's ratings have seen a steady increase, and it won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy.

  • "A Gifted Man"

<strong>"A Gifted Man," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>"A Gifted Man's" total viewer numbers were OK for a Friday night, but a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic is especially bad for CBS. Another bad sign: star Patrick Wilson tweeted about the end: "I had a great time. Thanks to my fans. So happy it's done." And done it is.

  • "The Amazing Race"

<strong>"The Amazing Race," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Voted the best reality show on TV several times (albeit years ago), "The Amazing Race" isn't going anywhere. Ratings have dropped a bit, but are still solid.

  • "The Big Bang Theory"

<strong>"The Big Bang Theory," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Nothing seems to be able to make a dent in this show. With fantastic ratings (it beat "Idol"!) and a rabid following, we'll be seeing plenty more "Big Bang" before its run is over.

  • "Blue Bloods"

<strong>"Blue Bloods," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The anchor of Friday nights on CBS, "Blue Bloods" has performed well, pulling in around 11 million viewers an episode. The show might not have the youngest audience, but it's still enough for CBS to keep it on the schedule.

  • "Criminal Minds"

<strong>"Criminal Minds," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Paget Brewster might be checking out, but "Criminal Minds" is here to stay. In Season 7, the procedural is still a consistently strong ratings performer for CBS.

  • "CSI"

<strong>"CSI," CBS</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Whenever the time comes, the "CSI" mothership will end with a lot of fanfare, but not this year. With new faces Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue around, there is going to be at least one more season.<br />

  • "CSI: Miami"

<strong>"CSI: Miami," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Out of the three (!) "CSI" programs on the air, "CSI: Miami" is the one to say goodbye first. The one-time ratings giant has been affected by football overruns (just as "The Good Wife" has) and "CSI: NY" has the edge in terms of total viewers, meaning a "Miami" sunset was inevitable. <br />

  • "CSI: NY"

<strong>"CSI: NY," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of the two "CSI" spinoffs, "CSI: NY" is the stronger -- pulling in more than 10 million viewers on a Friday night is no easy task -- and with "CSI: Miami" canceled, "CSI: NY's" renewal was a no-brainer.

  • "The Good Wife"

<strong>"The Good Wife," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This critical darling suffered after its move from Tuesdays to Sundays thanks to sports overruns. The viewers are frustrated, but given its strong cast and Emmy love, the show is still coming back for more.

  • "Hawaii Five-0"

    New post-16 maths course 'needed'

A new maths qualification is needed to encourage more students to study the subject after 16, a study suggests.

Post-16 maths would be further boosted if the new qualification was required for jobs or degree courses, argue Nuffield Foundation researchers.

The course, for students who do not take A-level maths, should focus on mathematical fluency, says the study.

Author Prof Jeremy Hodgen said universities and employers should be involved in developing it.

A previous Nuffield study found that fewer than one in five pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland studied maths after the age of 16; the lowest level among 24 countries surveyed.

    'Attractive alternative'

In Scotland almost half (48%) of students took maths after 16 but this was still below the average. The figure for Germany and Hong Kong was over 90% while in the US, New Zealand and Singapore it was over 65%.

England's Education Secretary, Michael Gove has set a target that "within a decade the vast majority of pupils are studying mathematics right through to the age of 18".

The new study looks in detail at post-16 maths education in seven countries.

    ?Start Quote

The Nuffield Foundation is absolutely right that more young people should study maths to 18?

End Quote Elizabeth Truss Education Minister

The authors say that rather than making the qualification compulsory the challenge is to provide a "clear and attractive alternative" for students who achieve good grades in GCSE maths but do not currently go on to study AS or A-level mathematics.

They also recommend that students should study a wider range of subjects, following the example of Singapore where students who study arts or humanities must also take a maths or science subject.

They also argue that the strongest incentive for students to continue with maths is that it is required for employment or higher education.

They want the new qualification to focus on statistics, mathematical modelling of real-life problems and general mathematical fluency. They say research is needed into exactly what mathematical skills employers and universities need school leavers to have.

In addition they endorse proposals to make over-16s in England study GCSE maths until they have achieved at least a C grade.

The Education Minister Elizabeth Truss said "The Nuffield Foundation is absolutely right that more young people should study maths to 18.

"We agree there is a gap in qualifications for students who do not currently study A-level maths and are working with leading professors like Tim Gowers, the Advisory Committee for Mathematics Education and Mathematics in Education and Industry to ensure there are excellent qualifications for those who have a grade C at GCSE and want to take maths further.

"Our reforms will mean that there is higher take-up. This is part of our work towards our goal of everyone studying maths until 18."

    'Teacher shortage'

Lead author Prof Hodgen, of King's College London, said "Our study shows the importance of a consensual approach to policy development and implementation.

"Higher education and employers will need to be involved in the development of a new qualification if they are to value it and to make it an entry requirement.

"Schools and colleges may need to be incentivised to offer the new qualification to students, as well as to ensure that existing advanced qualifications maintain their levels of participation."

Prof Hodgen also warned that the "critical shortage of mathematics teachers" meant it was "important not to underestimate the timescale necessary for change".

Biden to meet House members on gun proposals on Monday

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden and members of President Barack Obama's Cabinet will meet on Monday with members of the U.S. House of Representatives as he prepares recommendations on how to curb a rash of gun violence in the United States.

Biden is heading a task force due to provide Obama this week with recommendations on how to curb the gun violence. Obama formed the task force after the massacre - one month ago as of Monday - in Newtown, Connecticut, in which a gunman shot dead 20 children and six adults at a primary school.

The White House said the late-morning meeting would include Attorney General Eric Holder, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.

There was no immediate word on which members of the Republican-controlled House would attend the meeting at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building beside the White House.

Any gun control proposals face a difficult fight in Congress, in the House, where Republicans hold a majority of seats, but also in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats.

Many Democrats represent states where there is strong opposition to tightening laws on the sale and ownership of weapons.

3-D mapping of lipid orientation in biological tissues such as skin

Jan. 15, 2013 ? A non-invasive method that makes it possible to observe in situ how assemblies of lipids are oriented in biological tissues, and which does not require any labeling or preparation, has been developed by physicists from the Laboratoire d'Optique et Biosciences (CNRS / Inserm / ?cole Polytechnique). This work, published on the 14 January 2013 in the online journal Physical Review X, should enable the detection and characterization of certain pathologies associated with molecular disorders in the skin or in the nervous tissue.

Multilamellar assemblies of lipids (fats) play a key role in certain physiological functions, not just within the skin (which serves as a protective barrier against external aggressions) but also in the way neurons function. The disorganization of these assemblies is often linked to serious pathologies. However, the techniques normally used to determine the arrangement of molecules, such as X-ray scattering or nuclear magnetic resonance, are not suitable for studying intact biological tissues with good cellular resolution. In addition, they often require labeling and/or significant sample preparation.

First developed in the 1990s, multiphoton microscopy allows intact biological tissue to be observed in three dimensions with sub-cellular resolution at depths exceeding several hundred micrometers. Researchers from the Laboratoire d'Optique et Biosciences have identified a new indicator, known as P-THG (polarized third-harmonic generation), which is sensitive to molecular order in multi-layer lipid assemblies. Thanks to this optical contrast source, it is now possible to map the general orientation and degree of alignment of lipid assemblies in three dimensions and also to observe their possible disorganization. This novel multiphoton microscopy technique thus provides a non-invasive tool for probing molecular alignment in situ in biological media.

This approach enables scientists to map, with unparalleled sensitivity and contrast, the organization of lipids in human skin biopsies without prior preparation or labeling. This work lays the foundations for future developments in multiphoton microscopy as a method for measuring molecular order in intact biological media and opens the way to potential novel applications for detecting and studying the early stages of pathologies linked to molecular disorders.

Viadeo Buys French Startup Pealk, Announces ... - The Next Web

Viadeo, the France-based professional social network that competes with LinkedIn, has announced a trio of news items today including the upcoming launch of an innovation lab in San Francisco, the acquisition of French startup Pealk and that it has hit 50 million registered members.

The first two events are closely linked and center around Pealk, a 5-man French company that built a people search application for LinkedIn. The service saw impressive uptake when released but its short life ended when LinkedIn?revoked Pealk access to the API in June?citing a breach in terms of service.

Pealk?s founders were ?surprised? by the LinkedIn decision ? claiming that the company had been discussing a potential partnership with them ? but now, six months later, the startup has been acquired by its fellow French firm for an undisclosed sum, which Golden tells TNW is ?six figures?.

pealk 730x432 Now at 50m users, LinkedIn rival Viadeo acquires French startup Pealk and announces US innovation lab

The deal will see Pealk?s ?super search? service ? which proved popular with recruiters for its ability to search through LinkedIn?s user data ? rebuilt for Viadeo, while Boris Golden, the company?s co-founder and CEO, will head up that activity and also lead the company?s new ?Viadeo Labs? team, based in San Francisco.

Viadeo has had an office in the US city since 2010, but Viadeo Labs ? which will open in the coming months ? will be a new addition focused on ?outside of the box ideas, projects and products?, Viadeo chief strategy officer Olivier F?cherolle?tells TNW. Indeed, LinkedIn itself?opened?its own ?incubator? in December with a similar aim of encouraging new thinking.

Thierry Lunati, Viadeo co-founder and its director general, will head up the team which will consist of Golden and four engineers who will explore new approaches, products and business models for the company.

?The Labs team will be focused on finding great ways to make social networks more useful on a daily basis,? F?cherolle?says. ?We are sure that there are new products and ideas outside of our current scope ? and multi-local approach ? which can make the service more relevant to our users.?

F?cherolle also stresses the importance of emerging markets, which are a key focus of Viadeo ? which runs localized services in China, Russia, South America and other regions. He believes that?professional social networks like Viadeo should appeal to ?more than just white collar workers?, and he says the Labs team will have a massive hand in shaping future product and service development.

Viadeo raised $32 million in new funding last year to spur its growth into emerging markets, and the company has seen particular success in China, where LinkedIn remains unblocked by authorities but is yet to generate local traction.

However, LinkedIn stands a long way ahead of Viadeo worldwide, having just announced 200 million registered users last week. Indeed, Viadeo is in need of all the ideas it can muster;?LinkedIn has added 50 million users since Viadeo raised funding in April 2012, in which time the French company has added just 5 million new sign-ups.

That is one of the reason that spurred Golden into taking the role with Viadeo, unlike his other co-founders who moved on to other projects after netting the proceeds of the Pealk sale.

?Viadeo needs to be different to LinkedIn, which means a focus on innovation and new ideas; that?s the aim of the Viadeo Labs team,? he says.

Despite just one co-founder coming aboard, both sides tell TNW that the deal?is an acquisition not an aquihire, since the Pealk product will live on and Golden will retain an influential position with the company.

Though it has been bought by a fellow French company ? which is ironically located just a stone?s throw away from the Pealk office ? Golden and his co-founders traveled to Silicon Valley in the aftermath of their LinkedIn saga, soliciting approaches and offers from other companies. The team settled on Viadeo because of its focus on reviving the product, and Golden believes this is an ideal match.

?I couldn?t have imagined it at the time, but the deal with Viadeo makes so much sense,? he says. ?Some US firms wanted to acquihire us but that would have meant that the product would die, and that would have been such a disappointment.?

Golden is also excited about the potential to be involved in ?a startup within a big company?, which what the Viadeo Labs project is aiming to be. The team is set to come together and began work in April/May, so Viadeo users may see the fruits of its labor later this year.

It?s hard to see Viadeo catching LinkedIn on overall user numbers but, as it continues to push its local approach and focus on emerging markets, it will be interesting to see what release come out of the new Labs team.

Here?s the short press release issued by Viadeo and Pealk today, note that the company?s new user numbers are quietly announced in its about section at the bottom:

    Viadeo Acquires Pealk

The merger adds an innovative, high-performance tool to Viadeo?s arsenal of?solutions for SMBs.

Paris, 14 January 2013 ??Viadeo, the professional social network with 50 million members worldwide, announced their?acquisition of French start-up Pealk today. The buyout means that Viadeo members will get?access to Pealk?s innovative web app, a streamlined interface that helps SMBs find and contact?professionals on social networks.

Pealk?s app has garnered unanimous praise worldwide and gives professionals a seamless,?straightforward tool to search, filter, and organize profiles that can then be contacted. Designed?for maximum productivity, it allows HR and sales professionals to make the most of Viadeo?s?extensive database.

?A PSN?s value depends not only on the size of its member base, but on how members can use it?to their advantage,? states Dan Serfaty, co-founder and CEO of Viadeo. ?That makes Pealk the?most innovative product we?ve released in the last five years, thanks to its ability to democratize?social networking for business purposes.?

?We?re very proud and pleased with this buyout, which we consider to be the happy ending?to an exciting adventure,? says Boris Golden, Pealk?s CEO. ?It?s also the beginning of a new?adventure for us, since there are plenty of applications just waiting to be invented that will give?professionals more ways to unlock Viadeo?s full potential!?

The transaction was conducted in late 2012 for an undisclosed sum. Pealk shareholders were?advised by Fran?ois-Bourrier Soifer, partner of the Scemla Loizon Veverka & de Fontmichel law?firm.

    About Viadeo

Viadeo is a professional social network with 50 million members worldwide (Jan. 2013). Available in 8 languages,?Viadeo is used by those who want to:

    • Manage and grow their network of professional contacts.

    Tips: Satellite TV on Delivery

Communication between a sender and a receiver cannot be made possible without running through the process. An important thing involved in the process is the resource used for effective communication. The system used in satellite television is composed of complex machineries one of which is the satellite dish. This rounded toy can bring out huge fire power in terms of transmitting signals across the globe. Let?s venture inside its components and figure out it comes up with satellite TV on delivery.

Basically a typical satellite dish can be described as a parabolic antenna which is utilized to capture and receive microwaves coming from communication satellites across the planet. These microwaves are the ones responsible for the data transmissions and broadcasts produced during a certain feeding process. Such process is one which is used by satellite television technology.

Now let?s head on to how this baby works. The parabolic shape of the satellite dish is mainly due to the fact that it can reflect signals going to the dish?s focal point. A mechanism identified as a feedhorn is situated on the brackets of the focal point. This device is entirely responsible for acquiring the signals surrounding and within the focal point. It then relays these signals towards a low-noise block down converter or simply known as LNB. It is the task of the LNB to convert signals from raw radio and electromagnetic waves into electrical signals. It then changes these signals from downlinked bands such C-band and Ku-band into a more accessible L-band range. Dishes that are made available in direct broadcast satellite services put into action a new form of omnidirectional satellite antenna which does not readily require a parabolic dish and can be mounted on a mobile platform like a vehicle. This is known as an LNBF which joins the feedhorn with the LNB.

In the science of satellite dishes there is a concept known as the directive gain or theoretical gain. This simply relates the antenna of the dish in a certain direction to the intensity that would be given out by an ideal type of antenna radiating in equal directions having no losses. This actually depends on the factors such as feedhorn matching, finish of the surface, and shape accuracy.

Dishes not only come in different sizes. There are actually a variety of types for dishes. These include motor-driven dishes, multi satellite dishes, VSAT, and Ad hoc. Motor-driven satellite dishes have quite a fame with enthusiasts. These are placed above a pole and are then manipulated via a stepper motor and can also be orientated in different positions with the sky by rotation. Some multi satellite dishes can receive multiple signals without even positioning the dish into different orientation.

Another type of dishes is the VSAT or very small aperture terminal. It can enable a two-way communication through satellite internet between subscribers/consumers and private networks and companies. Last but not the least on the recognized list of satellite dishes is the Ad hoc. This dish is a reflector antenna. You can be scrappy in terms of having your own make-shift Ad hoc. Materials such as woks and garbage bin lids can be used. You just find a way to produce a low noise LNB and a high transmission DTH satellite and you?re in business with very useful signals via this dish.

When it comes to which dish is to pick, it?s really up to you. Don?t worry all of them are equipped to provide satellite television on delivery.
